  1. Once you make one in the walk through don't change it!

I have to keep reminding this to myself when I do. Happen to me yesterday in my first stage of the day. I was kicking myself in the ass and brought it to stage two. Well screwed that one up also.  It wasn't that hard. Could've been so simple🤔😄

btw 3 people DQ'd on that stage but that is only a small part why I changed.

No match. It's as simple as that. If it costs $1000 to run it and I get $700 worth of paid shooters the math doesn't work out so great.

Wow! Not sure what our regular weekend match cost. Our normal match fee is $10-$15 RO's and Staff work for free without lunch.  99.9% of our shooters helps with set up.  No one grumbles.

    Yes!

I spent the last season running what is probably the most expensive local 3 gun match around. The people who ran it in the past typically had end of season payouts, catered food at a big shoot off and lots of other cool stuff. They also had 50-75 shooters. I charged the same fee and had similar costs to run the match but had 20-35 shooters all year. By the time I had the bills paid I broke even, but never heard the end of the bitching about lack of freebies. Pretty sure there was an assumption that I directly profited from it and very few people could understand that it costs money to run a match.

Question, what would you do if you lost 1/2- 3/4 of your shooters due to Covid, lack of ammo or primers?  This is a real possibility here next year if things don't change.

No one listens when things are cheap and plentiful but halfway through a shortage and people come out and ask where they can find guns and ammo.

Isn't that the truth!  You hear "I'm going to wait till the prices goes down even further"

    or "It'll never happen again"

I might be wrong about this, but I think there is a point to not having a too strong barrel nut - as long as it does the job. The barrel nut connects to the upper receiver. The aluminum upper receiver. If stressed one of them will break before the other and I'd prefer the barrel nut to break before the upper.

I also prefer a lighter rifle to a heavier rifle, all else being equal. I get the point of going for the lowest hanging fruit, but I was at the point in the process where the barrel nut was next in line. I was improving on a rifle I already had, with a medium profile 16.5" barrel, so quite front heavy. If I would build a new rifle from scratch, I would probably just have used a lighter barrel and called it a day.

I never seen or heard of a barrel nut fail once installed.  The only non-moving barrel related part I seen fail was the gas tube where it meets the gas block.

I've sold some ammo to buy primers but not a direct trade. I did come across a guy a few months ago that bought components and was looking to trade for ammo or load for him.

Told this one guy who was spraying factory 223 like there was no tomorrow my primers are not for sale but I'd trade you for 223 ammo.  He declined and continued to spray.

Yep. When it passes all these guys who got caught short will stock up while swearing to never get caught short again. THEN, next time a whole new group of shooters will get caught short and start the whole process over again. It’s a never ending merry go round.

    Yup!

This is my third cycle. Heck my state is now tiring to pass ammo registration on ammo purchases.

    Now that's a tasty burger!

I get what you guys are saying about weight adding up. Sometimes its easy to get wrapped up in the belief that lighter at all cost is better. If you feel that way, carry on.

4 oz at the barrel nut is a big nothing. Its the location that means the least to the affect weight has on balance and handling (which is also why the AR doesn't handle any differently with 1 round or 30 in the mag). I would never use a less strong barrel nut, or less desirable Handguard,  here just for the sake of weight savings. Too many other more productive areas to shave weight than compromising on the barrel nut.

I also get what you're saying and agree.

Squib's being just as dangerous as a double charge has been proven many times over.

A squib(bullet stuck in the barrel) yeah but the talk back then was a small charge of Bullseye would blow up the gun with over pressure just like a double charge would.

***Light(er) off-book charges can be just as dangerous as a double charge.***

Not much powder is required to get the bullet to clear the barrel. Since Hodgdon, not "someone at RimRock", says the minimum charge is 2.7gr of Titegroup under a 148gr (L)SWC I would make a few test loads at 2.4gr, 2.2gr and 2.0gr. Proceed with caution and watch for squibs while testing.

Also, remember to segregate this specialized load because it might not clear another guns barrel.

I used to hear about that with Bullseye powder way back in the 80s. Thought it was more of a myth.  Never proven.
