All this talk of cylinder spinning reminds me of days when I was serious about golf. I had a pretty bad habit of excessive waggles. In fact my coach in high school used to call me Sergio if anyone plays golf you understand. When I started shooting competitively I always used to shake my left wrist to slide down my watch. I mean how stupid could I be after the first shot the watch is back to where it was. Oh the dopy things we do.

Ummm kind of like Norton playing the piano?

    FNG here again.

What does "(10.5.9) initially loading a revolver with a spurless hammer" refer to?

I did try to do a search here and on the www but without having a clue to prod me in the right direction, all I found are discussions on how horrible it is to lower a hammer on an SP-01 or the unabridged history of revolver design : ).

It refers to allowing a spurless hammer in a revolver to have the trigger pulled slightly to check that the cylinder is not binding.  If you have a spur on the hammer you can slightly cock it and check cylinder rotation.

Peacemaker type revolvers have almost never been used in uspsa, and their older versions had a half cock notch that allowed the cylinder to rotate freely to load chambers.

As revoman stated it has its problems and is not something I do, but it is allowed.

What an interesting and charming thread.  All from the philosophy of routine and even the dig about annoying the competition, which I got a good laugh out of.  A snarky but very fair observation.

I asked a revo veteran why they pull the trigger back slightly and spin the cylinder.  As was mentioned it was to make sure that there were no high primers and the bullets were all seated properly so that there was no way for it to bind.

But pragmatically speaking this only works for the first set of rounds.  If you get a high primer in your reload moonclip then you're effed anyways.

As an interesting side note he also mentioned that icore rules allow this, you cannot do this in USPSA since you are not allowed to pull the trigger "half cock" to be able to rotate the cylinder a full revolution??  Have not verified.

Still pretty cool though and works great to annoy everyone - kind of like catching your round mid air during the unload and show clear procedure : )

I will say in the very few times I shot revolver I have this urge to make sure the cylinder locks with a click before I holster.  An asinine and unneeded action but a compulsion all the same.

10.5.9 Failure to keep the finger outside the trigger guard during loading, reloading, or unloading. Exception: while complying with the “Make Ready” command to lower the hammer of a gun without a decocking lever, or while initially loading a revolver with a spurless hammer.

If you go too far and a round is fired, it is a DQ.

  4. On My 325 when I close the cylinder it seems to be able to rotate a couple of chambers on first closing?  Don't see why, it shoots great and is actually the most accurate revolver i have.  Have only shot it in idpa and edc.  So I don't have a habit of checking for it on my other competition revolvers.

The one habit i do have is i close my eyes and mentally pantomime shooting the course, this sets the shooting order and engagement order.  Takes only a few seconds, but it helps the old brain function better.

I've had more success with JHP bullets than FMJ ones at major PF.  The base of the JHP bullet isn't exposed lead like the FMJ bullets are.  That exposed lead may be causing your comp fouling.  Also, JHP bullets seem to be more accurate than FMJ ones (probably due to the covered base).  I've never got decent groups at 50 yards with FMJ bullets out of a revo.  I use Zero 125 gr. JHP 38 Super bullets with 8.3 gr VV 3N37 in a 38 Super revo with a comp at major PF.  Minimal comp fouling and, although they're .356", they seem to work well in a  .358" barrel at the higher velocities.  All my Open USPSA classifiers and scores have been shot with that gun.  I also shot the IRC with that gun one year... 169 PF!

I've tried coated bullets (not at major PF) in a 9mm PCC with a comp and the results were pretty bad.  Tremendous fouling of the comp.  I would imagine that they wouldn't work well at major PF.  Velocities would be too high.

I was told jhps are more accurate due to the compression used to form the HP removes all voids in the base.

If you can find a sp like mgolds 142 jp in 125, or even try them if you can get an order through.

  6. Ok all of you Revolver Aficionado's the 2024 USPSA Area 3 Steel Challenge Championship will be held April 19th to April 21st https://practiscore.com/ruger-2024-area-3-steel-challenge-championship/register .

Right now we have 4 ISR's and 3 OSR's and still have many openings, and are the 3rd and 4th most populated Main Match Divisions behind CO and Open.

Last year we had 6 ISR and 6 OSR and were the 4th most popular Main Match Divisions.

Come out and drag race on steel!

  7. Ok all of you Revolver Aficionado's mark your calendar for Saturday August 31st for the 2024 USPSA Free State Championship.  We've been the 4th most populated Division the last 3 years and last year had 14 Revolvers.

The match will be open for registration in March https://practiscore.com/free-state-kansas-championship-2024/register so clear your calendars.

I will post more information as available.

Saw at Speed shooters they have a few rescomps for revolvers.  I have one for my 6" limited gun from back in day.. Does this come with different size barrel studs ? I didnt see any assessories listed.. basically can I get a .22 stud to use with my 617 ?
ALthough... to be pedantic, I dotn think I need a holster for ICORE... rules are a bit contradictory.. figured I would just make things easier and get one though when the division went live last ? 2 years ago ?

You are correct you don't need a holster for Rimfire.  The problem is the reloads on a field course, need some way to carry them.

  9. Well FWIW I've convinced our local USPSA club to add a Revolver Category to each match probably until at least June.  We did it in December (we had 4 IS & 2 OS), the January match was frozen/snowed out and this month we again have 4 Irons and 2 Optics (not all the same optic guys either).  We will be the 3rd most popular Division/Category, Co has 31, Lo has 15, Revolver has 4 with 2 more open under the Revolver Category for 6 total, Prod has 5, PCC 3, Open 4 minus 2 Open Revolvers so only 2 "normal" open guns, SS 2 and Ltd & L10 1 each.

All of the Optic Revolvers are local ICORE, one is a Distinguished Senior and has vision issues but he did shoot USPSA in the past, one last month was me and I shoot both dot and not in ICORE and USPSA, since it's inception and Revolver since its adoption, and the other guy shoots ICORE with a Dot and will shoot USPSA with irons when he's in the mood or it's a big match.

What to draw from this?  It's early yet, will see how it goes as the season heats up.  This is the home club for the Free State where Revolver has been the 4th most populated Division for the last 3 years.  Shameless plug the 2024 Free State will be August 31st!

  10. Might try Blue Bullets their coating is one of the hardest/thickest, they can send a sample pack.  A lot depends on the velocity, up to 1200 f/s some coated will work but over 1300 f/s?

Last time I had a comp was about 1996, and JHP were the choice, don't think there were any Poly coatings and the Moly coatings couldn't handle it.

I generally agree with you.  38 shorts have served me well.  I'm interested in the Supers for a niche I'm trying to fill.

My bit of testing of the shorts loaded to 38 super specs showed good accuracy, zero bullet creep etc.  I'm just wondering if I'll get decent case life due to my heavy ish roll crimp in the lube groove .

    Jason

Its easy to get major pf with 38 specials and I have worked up 2 major pf loads with 38 short colt cases.  And using Starline brass can use my good moons.

When I first started shooting practical pistol, we had advanced a long way from this methodology; We used a stop-watch and a whistle. It was cutting edge technology back then.

I do recall when one of our members bought a shot-timer, I felt like one of those apes when they first see the monolith in 2001.

And remember when we could actually find an affordable chronograph?  I know I thought what's next, heads up display for our 1911's?

Is that something you can watch happen with the grip off?

Not really.  And it's not recommended to use full mainspring pressure with the side plate off. It's hard on the trigger stud to put full mainspring pressure on with side plate off.

If you can't feel or see any issues with no mainspring attached, try attaching the main spring and tightening the strain screw just enough so it stays put then with side plate off try the trigger.  It should be a very light pull.  If it does create that wall feel, and the mainspring has no arch at the top, then it is likely knuckling.

Don't force it though, and don't tighten the mainspring down all of the way with no side plate on.

Re-reading your question, with the grip off, back the strain screw off until the mainspring has very little pressure, just enough that it stays put.  Then try the trigger if the wall is still there, take the mainspring out and try again.  If the wall isn't there, look at the mainspring it should have an arch at the top.

There was a range in Iowa years ago where they would burn the shot-up pins in a barrel after the match and guys would cook hot dogs over them.  Lead bullet fumes and all.

Sorta explains some of the behavioral issues we have seen in many of the older pin shooters!  😄

I'd worry about the toxic fumes from the Pin coating too.

Decades ago my dad had the idea to melt styro foam cups and make glue.  I pointed out the fumes were probably toxic?  Talked him out of it.
