I don’t understand how it’s possibly cost effective to pay for the extra metal in that brass vs a little more powder.

Stepped brass prevents bullet setback, = lower insurance cost. Lower internal case volume requires less powder to achieve the same pressure. in today's market less powder per round = cost savings. Even 0.03gn powder savings adds up when you are loading million of rounds

  2. I started shooting a dot on my Shadow in 2013 because I could no longer see sights, was forced into open.  lobbied for production optics. What we got was CO for Tupperware. Now that the weight limit is gone we see growth of CO.

  3. All of the alternative powders will be just as hard to fine as 3N38. No one has any in stock, when it comes in it sells out very fast.  You will have to watch Powder valley & Graf & Sons website and check every hour of everyday to snag some powder.

What makes you say this? His rounds passes his plunk test and he's using 145 grain bullets that are generally quite long, so plenty of bullet in the case.

OP is @ 1.160" SAAMI max is 1.169".  Op is looking for more velocity out of this round, experimenting with shorter loads may give him the results he looking for without adding powder, and with the price & availability of reloading components every little bit counts.

  5.  Your pistol shoot good groups in a ransom rest at the higher PF,  but in your hand the recoil from that higher 149 PF load will result in larger groups and slower shot to shot times. The balancing act is to find a load that shoots the best group with your hand for the type of shooting you are going to be doing(Target vs bullseye vs USPSA).  If you are shooting any of the action pistol games you don't need 1.5" groups. You will score higher with the 2"-2.5" group(129pf load) that lets you shoot faster splits with good enough accuracy for the game you are playing. Generally in pistols you will get better groups with lighter bullets as they are loaded to higher velocities.

  6. One thing to keep in mind is that your Glock "carry gun" only has a small one or two port comp. Open guns have 4 -8 big ports or more. Your small comp will be over powdered long before you get to a 9 major load.  Building a load that has more gas then your comp can use will only result in more recoil and broken parts. A test you can do with your gun is to shoot a USPSA target with the muzzle 2"-3" from the cardboard and see if the cardboard rips from the gas or is there just a bullet hole. If the cardboard rips your load is over powering the comp. An efficient comp and load combination  will have 85%-90% of the gas being used in the port of the comp.  Loading more powder to generate more gas then the comp can use efficiently will be wasted out the front of the comp.  So you should be looking at a medium slow burning powder. Powders you should be looking at: N330, WSF, BE-86, N340.  It's not velocity of the bullet you are looking for it's the gas produced to reduce the muzzle rise. Lets look at 1070fps - 1180fps with a 115gn bullet. A faster burning target powder will get you there with about 4.0gn - 4.5gn of powder, with the medium slow burning powder will get you there with about 4.8gn - 5.4gn of powder to get the same bullet FPS. The slower burning powders are using more powder to do the same work. you get the idea. The Slow burning powders that are typically used in an open gun will burn dirty at the lower charge weights that you would use, at the higher charge weights most of the gas will be going out the muzzle.

    Watching this thread.

Finally decided to jump into reloading since my old model of "buy it cheap and stack it deep" doesn't really work anymore considering the times (although small pistol primers are the new toilet paper 😝)...

I have a bunch of Sport Pistol and the Blue .356 125gr TC's coming... Hoping to dial a load close to 1040fps to hit right at 130pf out of a CZ S2 and 9mm 1911, thinking 3.6g to 3.8gr @ 1.110 might get me there...

Are you using the "normal" .355 Blue's or the "special order" .356's..?

    I use .356"
