  1. Wingnut, I have no experience with Barnes. But everyone is different. I like a rifle that feels like, well, a rifle. So I kept diddling with a standard milspec carbine until I had a fixed stock, and an 18" free floated barrel. I honestly can't say it will better, as in the original configuration it shot better than I can hold at my level. But there is a huge confidence boost that I believe I can shoot it better. Don't get too hung up on the brand, get the one that speaks to you. It boils down to the indian, and not the arrow. If the Barnes speaks to you, that's the one.

  2. What lower should I start with.

Start by checking with your LGS. Many times they will get a good buy on a batch and pass on savings. Personally, I would start with a milspec lower, not some exotic metal or billet job. You can go round and round about which roll mark is better, but ultimately, milspec will hold up and fitment of parts won't be an issue. The only advantage I see to building you own is a sense of accomplishment, and ability to install the exact parts you want such as furniture and trigger groups. Otherwise, there are several competent guns available for our game, such as Stag 3G, Doublestar, Armalite has a new offering, and I'm sure some others. Point being, unless you are absolutely positive of the exact components you want, it's probably easier to buy one already complete. I really don't think there is a significant cost savings associated with building vs. buying a quality rifle. But YMMV.

  3. My story works like this, I started with an Optics Ready M&P-15. I have slowly upgraded just like you, adding a Miculek brake, Troy rail, CMC trigger.... Deja Vu huh?

Then started to upgrade higher end parts like a nice White Oak Armament match 223 Wylde barrel, Vltor gunfighter cheating handle, etc....

i got to looking at all my left over parts and with the addition of a new upper and lower, I had a rifle in a box. :)

I am continuing to upgrade 1 rifle and trickle those parts down to the 2nd rifle, which now I have a box of parts (minus a stock) to build a 3rd rifle.

So I plan to keep upgrading my primary 3gun rifle, and now I have a 2nd good quality 3 gun rifle, and will soon have a 3rd 3 gun rifle.

I've done this over 2 years, as I find the components I want on sale.

Same story here. A left over part is just the start of a new rifle!

  4. Based on this thread, I just picked up a 26 inch 3000. I got the camo version for double duty as competition/bird gun. It's my first semi and all the info you guys shared helped me decide which way to go. Thank you.

For the guys that take off their tube when persuing other interests, about 22" of 7/16" dowel works wonders. But your length may vary.

  5. My club is starting a Steel Challenge match. Stage diagrams are abundant, but fail to mention plate height. Rules temporarily unavailable on USPSA site. So, does anyone know and willing to share this info with me? Appreciate it!

  6. Kind of the same, but kind of different perspective. In my situation, I find myself at local club matches sometimes in the role of RO. Sometimes just for a few shooters, sometimes the whole squad. My intent is to take the first reasonably available RO class, because I have an interest. That said, from my perspective, if I can do something better, or see something better, please, please tell me. I can take and appreciate constructive criticism, and have.

  7. Do you think said person will have any interest shooting Limited eventually?

If so, get the gun in 40sw. My Trojan ran factory 40 and long 40 without a problem from the start.

With Tripp System mags you have the ability to run 8 rounds of major or 10 rounds of minor 40 and still fit the box. I just don't see the need for 45acp in SS unless that is the only caliber you shoot, or you're 65. :roflol: (Gonna go run and hide now...)

Gonna be .45. Already set up for limited .40 minor with an XDm I like pretty well. Also use it for 3 gun. Another reason for .45 is maybe HM in 3 gun. Plus, dang it, a .45 ACP 1911 is purely badass. Thanks for all the input! I'll take a serious look at the STI offerings.
  8. Entry level for someone wanting to try USPSA SS division. Not really rock bottom, but reliable and trouble free out of box, with plentiful magazine options an not a lot of tuning. Hope this isn't impossible, but I truly have little experience with the 1911, and have no point of reference.
