  1. I think the question you want to ask is "Is your 2lb trigger safe for the game?"

Along the same lines, is YOUR trigger finger a sub 2 lb trigger finger?

    Mike

That's a good point to bring up... I let friends shoot my pistol, 2lb trigger and my rifle, 3 lb trigger, and it scares them because they aren't ready for it. Once you know the trigger is safe.. Practice with it and make sure YOU are comfortable and capable of shooting a match with it.

  2. Eli,

The premise of your inquiry seems to be to learn what the top dogs are shooting and emulate that. I get where you're coming from and trying to go, but frankly, you don't know what you want, and we can't tell you.

In broad strokes: take the advice previously given to buy something that fits your current budget, buy ammo or components to fit it, and then shoot the pure piss out of it. While doing the aforementioned pure-piss-shooting, you'll have a chance to fondle and shoot many guns at matches if you let your intentions be known. Armed with that knowledge and experience you can then search out the gun that's right for you because you'll have a better idea of just exactly what that particular platform is.

    Happy trails...

Best post in the thread... OP you are definitely an engineer. Your over thinking the shit out of something you have already decided.

    Oh yeah... I shoot a STI.. : )

  3. Notta problem bud.. just hook up with the guys I told ya about and you will be pointed down the path to enlightenment ( as in your bank account will get lighter once you start shooting 3 gun ) hehe.. Once you make it big time.. you can come on down here and shoot with us Texas boys.. Honestly, I was a new guy many moons ago and I had someone to show me the ropes. I have always appreciated that and try to help out anyone who wants to learn or shows interest in our chosen sport.

Good luck and you know how to get ahold of me if you have any questions..

    CS

  4. If you need some caddies.. I have some I don`t use anymore. Let me know what kind of budget your working with, I`m sure we can get ya hooked up. I have 3 Cali Competition Works 6 rd, 2 Choate 6 rd and 1 Cali Competition Works 4 rd. If your interested shoot me a PM.

  5. Everyone on here ( including myself ) will tell you to shoot with what you have to start out until you see how everyone else is doing it, so you can get an idea what's going to work for you. With that being said, loading from a dump pouch will suck balls!! It will be very difficult and slow. Had a friend trying it one time and stuck a shell into his tube backwards in the middle of a stage!! How ya think that worked out for him?? If your going to be shooting with more experienced friends, I'm sure someone will let you borrow shell caddies or bandoleers. Even if you don't shoot with friends.. Pretty much anyone I shoot with will let you borrow something to use, especially if you let them know it's your first time, so don't be afraid to ask.

  6. It's an old remvams compensator... I tried doing a search but nothing is coming up. I had one that was similar to a bird cage. When it came out it was supposed to be great( mid 90s), but everything I shot thru it was very unstable. Never really figured out if it was the comp or barrel, or a combination. The only ammo that shot straight was 52 gr black hills.

  7. I shot my first IDPA match today since 1999.. I typically only shoot USPSA and 3 gun. I had a great time, although I do hate only loading 10 rds in my 22 rd mags, and its hard to slow down the run and gun mentality, and think. It was really fun to scream thru a stage to end up down 22 points cuz I didn`t shoot for the 0 zone.. I just put 2 on paper. We had an awesome squad, with a good bunch of guys, and I had fun. Trigger time is trigger time.

  8. Spend money on optics a good optic, good ammo make it very effective out to 500yds.

Agreed.. buy a good optic AND MOUNT. Put a good trigger in it, get good optics,

What is "good mount"? Best brand of ammo?

    Jack

I have used only LaRues and a modified PRI mount and ring set for the last 6 years, with no problems at all. Yeah, they cost a bit more, but your going to get what you pay for. Putting a $600+ scope in a sub par mount is asking for trouble. You need a solid platform when your banging into barricades, dropping your rifle into a barrel or onto a table. In the middle of a stage is not a good time to find your zero shifted due to one of the previously mentioned incidents.. seen it happen more than once. Look around at what the better shooters are using and ask questions.. or call Paul at MSTN, hes an awesome guy and will get you squared away the first time.

ammo:.. I shoot mostly PMC 55 grain for local matches out to 200 yds or so, at a big match I use Black Hills Reman 55/68 grain depending. Thats just me and what I`m comfortable with and have had good luck in the years I have been doing this..

    hope that helps

  9. Agreed with the above. Spend money on optics and ammo. Those two things you can and will always use. A good optic can go on a good upper later after you save up and find out what you like. Iv been running the same 16in upper for the last 8000rds. It's not the best but a good optic, good ammo and practice make it very effective out to 500yds.

Agreed.. buy a good optic AND MOUNT. I have seen a lot of guys thru the years with a very good optic in a cheap mount that cannot hold a zero, and blame everything except the mount as to why they can`t hit shit.. You will be farther ahead as you progress spending a little more for better equipment up front and not have to buy twice later..

Put a good trigger in it, get good optics, spent the rest of the cash on ammo and practice. Learn it inside and out to the distances you plan on shooting. Once your skills increase, you will really see the benefits of a higher end rifle.
