  1. Everyone has given ya sound advise. All I will add is lose the slings.. you don`t need em on 99% of the stages you will shoot. They will catch on something when you least want em to, like your pistol, a barricade, or just generally get in your way.. Carry them in your bag, and have them if you need them.

Good luck and welcome to 3 gunning...

  2. Well, the journey is complete. Thanks to a fellow forum member who was looking for a limited gun, and wanted to trade an open gun, a deal was made. I have a new (to me anyway) open blaster. Its a shorty in 9mm major. Now all I have to do is get some time behind it!!

    Thanks again Craig...

  3. well.. my journey to the dark side is almost complete. Shot my friends open gun today. 6 stages, no mikes and 1 for 1 on all the steel and poppers. I didn`t shoot as fast as I would have liked but all and all I am really happy I could see, and my speed will come back once I`m comfortable. I have the barrel, the slide will be here Tuesday, I have a Cheely Cmore RTS mount and optic on the way as well.. I`m pretty fired up. Now... wheres my damn cookies???

  4. Come on over! There's cookies for everyone :)

Cookies you say??? What kinda cookies?? Well my decision was made a lot easier the rest of the weekend. I won a 1911 barrel in the prize drawing, and picked up a 9mm. Gonna do a 9x19 shorty, like a steel gun. This ought to be fun...

    Thanks for the input guys..

  5. RH45... that`s part of my concern with getting specific glasses for shooting my pistol. What`s it going to do when I`m shooting more than one gun on a stage? If I have glasses set up for seeing iron sights, what`s gonna happen to the guns I can see ok with? I can see up close, but things get blurry as the distance increases without my glasses. That`s why I`m thinkin the dot will work.. see the target in the optic, set the dot on it, press trigger, and repeat as necessary.

  6. I`m really considering switching my limited gun to an open gun. I am getting back serious about shooting after taking about a 3 year break. I have been shooting a lot since the first of the year, and I am having a hard time getting back to where I used to be(I was shooting on par with a high B or low A). Shooting a 3 gun last weekend I had to keep telling myself to slow down and see my sights, but I still had bad misses on targets past 15yds with my pistol. I shot the Space City match today and it really showed on longer range steel and targets. When I transition from close and fast to distant targets, I go from focusing on the sight to looking for the target, when I come back to the sights, I lose the targets, as in can`t see it, when I transition back to see the target I lose the sights and end up missing. I thought it was just me being rusty, but it isn`t getting any better. I`m getting frustrated with it because I know I shoot better than I am. A friend has offered to let me shoot his open gun next weekend to see if it`s easier for me. Will going to a dot type sight help me with this..(I don`t have problems with my scoped 3 gun rifle), or do I need to consult my eye doctor about getting glasses specifically for shooting?

I have to add, I have an issue with my right eye. I was hit with a bungee cord when I was younger and my right eye doesn`t focus the way its supposed to. After my injury I transitioned to left handed on all platforms since I can`t see thru a scope or the sight on my shotgun. I want to build a 9x19 for 3 gun as that`s my primary focus, and just shoot minor for USPSA.

Any thoughts from someone who has walked this path already?

    Thanks,

  7. Unless you plan on shooting open your not loading anything over 9 in the gun at the start of a stage at most matches. You can top it off after the buzzer, but can`t start over division capacity. As I told you earlier.. shoot some more matches and see how it works.. then you can base decisions on what you learn by doing it. Your using a totally different platform than most, so what works for someone shooting a regular shotgun might not work for what your trying to accomplish. I will tell you to be careful loading shells from a dump pouch.. I had a friend stuff a shell into his tube backwards in the middle of a stage doing that, you have to pay attention.

I always try to load my gun if I can from my carriers. It gets my hands loosened up just before doing it in on the clock, and every little bit helps.

  8. For my rifle I have a 60 rd Surefire in the gun, a 30 in a Blade Tech pouch on my hip and another 30 in a Blade Tech on my back (if the stage is that big).

For shotgun its gonna be whatever you feel comfortable getting around your waist. I take 6 4rd Otto carriers with me to every match. I wear what I think I`m gonna need for the stage. The match we shot over this past weekend had 29 steel plates and poppers, and an MGM spinner. I had 3 left on me and 2 in the gun at the end. I`m actually getting a couple 4x4s too.. just so I have enough.

Once you shoot a few matches you will get a feel for how things go, and where and how you can wear your gear comfortably. Look at other peoples gear and ask questions. Most people will let you try it out to see how you like it. And as D.Hayden said.. I let 2 other shooters use my carriers because they didn`t have enough.

    Welcome to the sport..

  9. Has anyone used one of them? The range I shoot at to practice does not allow anyone to shoot a carbine in the bays without a variance and attending a training course they put on, and there is a waiting list to even take it. I want to get a .22 upper that is the same as my rifle to practice without causing problems.

    Thanks,

  10. Damn.. you such an engineer!!! lol

    Used STI/SVI Custom:

Probably ~$2500 before magazines (If you look you can find a decent pistol for under $2500 with magazines) I got one with 4 SV mags for $2250

Magazines run $150 each for tuned mags (Brazos sells a set of 4 tuned mags for $500, and individual mags are $125 each.)

Must reload (which I do) - most STI/SVI's won't run with factory .40 ( no you don`t. DC Ammo, a member on here, will sell you major caliber reloaded ammo that`s guaranteed to make PF, until you can get yourself set up to load, at a very reasonable price. )

    Fixed those for ya..

In Eli's defense, I sent him that list; it was what I went through in my decision making process for selecting a limited gun earlier this year. At the time, I was not seeing any SV pistols being sold for under $2500, and magazines were never included extra. Certainly a lower round count SVI was going for $2500 or above at that time. Magazines, OK, maybe not $150 for tuned mags. $125. The comparison was with a CZ TS mag which is built up for ~$100 and will run 20 or 21 with no tuning.

Finally, on the loaded ammo, I understand that some folks will sell major long-loaded ammo, but the point was that if you're on your way to a match and realize you've forgotten your long-loaded ammo and you're shooting a 2011 you're likely screwed. There are other pistols out there that will make major with $30/100 Wal-Mart ammo. I've yet to see DC Ammo for sale at any store anywhere near one of the ranges I shoot at.

As I explained to Eli, this was the process I used to select my own limited gun, and his criteria weighting might be different. I ended up with a CZ CTS, and I don't regret that choice at all. However as I pointed out, I'm not a M or GM shooter, so my opinions are suspect.

It wasn`t a slam at him or you for that matter.. I was just commenting on the points of the S_I list I noted. I got a good deal on my pistol no doubt, a custom built STI with less than 2000 rds thru it, with 4 SV mags doesn`t come along too often, but they are out there if you look.

As far as the ammo.. if your shooting a S_I and you are going to a match and forgot your ammo.. doom on you... :roflol:

I hope he truly gets exactly what he wants, and enjoys shooting the piss out of it.

  12. Get good mags, find a load that works for it, and practice with it. I keep spare recoil springs, a spare main spring, and mag springs and followers. The trigger will take you a bit of getting used to, but once you do.. you will be happy!!

    Good luck
