  1. Erik, I'm glad you clarified the difference between the Performance Center and Standard/Police issue models. The standard 5906 has had it's share of field issues (reliability). Most are also very picky about what you feed them. The consequences in a firefight can be a life altering experience.
  2. Hi Bob, Here's one, right up your alley. An article on the Top 10 ways to sniff out a bad gunsmith, before he FUBAR's your investment.
  3. Hey Steve, I'm glad it worked out for you. Before you hack up the Arredondo pads. Sell them to someone who has no magwell on their gun (or another brand that works with Arredondo). Then put the cash towards Dawson Base pads. No mods required. The best reason to own DP pads is the speed at witch you can disassemble and clean/repair your mag in the middle of a match. Mike
  4. Rhino, Once in a while you can catch upper and lower assemblies from separate sellers (ie. private deals) at very attractive prices.
  5. Jeff, You can go nuts trying to buy the "single best option" for your needs. Figure out how much you have to spend and go to matches a see what people shoot in your price range. However, there is the "buy/sell/trade" concept that works well for some people. Buy what you can afford and get out there and start shooting. If you don't like it, sell it or trade it on something else. Just make sure you consider a match grade trigger in anything you buy. It makes a difference. Good luck Mike
  6. You're all correct. it IS a matter of personal preference. And, I prefer to demonstrate my skill with a stock AR (20" HBAR) in Limited Class. And, the last match has proven to me that the HBAR is the best choice for achieving that fore mentioned special satisfaction. I'm a C class shooter. In the last major match I attended. I finished 17th out of 55 competitiors on the, 75-300yds, long range stage (combined divisions and classes). And 22nd in the short range clearing house (point blank) stage. I believe the HBAR performed very well in both extremes. So if your on a tight budget (as are most family shooters), one must consider what is the best bang for the "limited" bucks. Good luck in your decision process.
  7. Real men/women/shooters can handle the weight of an HBAR. You'll wish you had one at 200 yards and beyond. And, there is nothing wrong with buying a stock AR. There is a special satisfaction you get when you kick someone's butt with a rifle that cost half of what theirs did.
  8. Hi Jeff I shoot Limited Division. I have a 16" Bushmaster and a 20" Armalite. Both guns have compensators which help alot. I like the 20" barrel for serious competition because of the accuracy at long range. The Armalite has a National Match trigger that I also recommend for best results. Two weeks ago at the NYS rifle match, I had no problem with the 300 yard targets with standard A2 sights. If you shop around the deals are out there. I built the Armalite from parts for less than $800. And it shoots GREAT. BTW it also helps to paint your front sight for easier and faster sight pictures. Mike
  9. Put your P16 on ICE! . . . . Dawson ICE ! ! Dawson ice magwell and +2 basepads all the way. It's fast and easy. They fit and function perfectly. I love mine ! You loose a small amount of the grip area. But, no machining. With the hammer down, knockout the mainspring housing pin. push the DP Ice in place and insert the new pin. I had it on two different guns without filing or fitting. BTW shooters connection sells Dawsons cheaper than Dawson (go figure).
  10. Will the snow be off that mountain in April? Great match Louie. It's always nice to see the "good ole boys" teach the Military how to shoot. Loved the 300 yard targets. Mike
  11. Hi Shepard, When you tried to "drop it in". How did the failure to drop in present itself? (ie, what wouldn't work?) Mike
  12. I'm looking to replace a barrel on a Stainless Steel P16 Limited. I got a good price on a Ed Brown Barrel/Link/bushing assembly #935-40. Is this a true drop in? Are there any concerns? I would love to hear from anyone who used Ed brown barrels in a Para. Thanks Mike

  14. Hi Chriss, I know how you feel. My match ended on the 2nd pistol stage with a squib load. The bullet in the barrel cost me severely. After that, I just didn't care and it shows. I only shot the stages I felt like shooting and some I didn't shoot at all. For the two rifle stages, I slammed home my reliable 40 rounder and ran the stage, point shooting, from the hip. Scores looked pretty good on those. But, the day was a loss overall. Our score keeper got the pistol results done before he had to leave town on business. I expect the rest any day. For Pistol the preliminary results show you 6th overall out of 63 shooters . And, you were 1st in your division and class. Hope the rest of the match goes well for you. All the results will be posted at www.rbps.net sometime next week if all goes well.
  15. Hey Chriss, How did you like the match this year? Hope you found the shirts acceptable. BTW: I painted the backer boards at the 50 yard berm on the rifle range just for you. Hope everyone enjoyed the match ! ! Mike

  19. I just witnessed a (side) match where a competitor showed up with an AR in full dress. Manufactured by a well known competitive rifle manufacturer. This baby had it all. What was missing was the instruction manual that expained to the shooter, that if you used any of the multitudes of optics hanging off the side of the gun. More side clearance is necessary when shooting near props. It was a sweet shooter too. It gave him nice tight groups . . . . . in the barricade.

  21. I'm not sure what NP3 is. However, since it is giving you "super slick" performance, I will assume it is a variant of nickel plate with PTFE (Teflon). I have used Teflon Nickel in several applications and it is "slick". I'm sure it worked well on the glock slide because it is mostly external surfaces. However, to get the best results on a mag body, I would talk to your plating house about having a high quality finish inside the body as well as outside.
  22. Hi John, Yeah, all my mags are blued (painted?) too. My paying job is mechanical engineering. I deal quite frequently with plated finishes in my designs. One item of interest to you would be that I have never seen electroless nickel finishes applied to the interior of a part with the same quality and appearance as the outside. I believe it is a limitation of the process. Nickel plating can be functional or decorative. However, I've never given it much thought when making magazine selection. Your observations and my experience make sense. I guess I would recommend that your friend strip the nickel plate on one and have it blued to see if it helps. Rough nickel finishes (even on the outside) are due to old chemicals being used in the process. The best platers change the chemicals frequently. I don't know much about hard chrome. But, the process is probably similar and run the same risks. Good luck. Mike
  23. Deuce, I would make it a point to avoid aluminum. My 11 year old has been shooting my Para P16, 40 S&W (All Steel Gun with full length barrel) and enjoying it. Although he scoffed at the weight when he first picked it up, the heavier gun reduces the recoil and makes for a more pleasent shooting experience. Mike
  24. OK John, You're my hero. After having had my fill of aftermarket failure, I followed you suggested set up to the letter. One month later I stand (Well, actually I'm sitting) before you a much happier camper. The original para hardware with the addition of the DP basepads HAVE BEEN FLAWLESS !! Thanks Mike
