Did I mention Jeff has a pistol range out the back door of his shop? More on that later.
So, he tears into my STI and without pushing, starts making suggestions on making a good gun better and more reliable.
Trigger was about 3.25#'s and not so crisp. So he replaced the hammer with a Ultra Low Mass Koenig Hammer. A new EGW sear, SVI Titanium sear spring. All perfectly fitted. The trigger is now a super crisp 2#'s It has to be felt to be believed.
He also fitted a new Wilson Safety, Dawson Mag catch and EGW slide lock.
Did I mention that while he was working on my gun, I was in the back yard shooting about $30,000 worth of custom guns? Including the gun featured in Combat Handguns.
Oh yeah, he provided the ammo too. He just told me to take what i wanted out of the safe and "have at it". I like this guy!__________________

Thought some might be interested in a review of the custom 2011 USPSA Limited gun I am having built by Jeff Abernathy. It started it's life with me as a used STI Eagle in 40 S&W.
<br
While the gun ran well, I thought there was room for improvement. I started my search for a reputable 2011 expert on the east coast. After much research, and seeing a custom build in this months Combat Handguns I contacted Jeff Abernathy in Mt. Holly NC.

Jeff was very personable and invited me to come visit his shop about 1.5 hours from me. I took him up on his offer. I am glad I did. No CNC machines, just a basement shop in Mt. Holly NC. Now this shop is filled with Bridgeport Mills, lathes, and all the finest machine shop equipment money could buy... in 1952. I LIKE it.
It was then, that I found out Jeff was the son of the famous Tommy "Tommy Guns" Abernathy. He took over the business when his father passed in 2008. Enough bio, on to the guns.

I actually use a drop of blue on mine. It is a little more difficult to remove to change the spring, but not big deal to me.

Thank you for everyone's input. After speaking to Matt Cheely, I have decided to go ahead with a 2011. Thank you again for everyone's post, they were well read and thought about.
Thank you
Excellent decision. Congrats!

This is where I stand as of Saturday. Off to hard chrome this week. If anyone is interested, Jeff has a new facebook page. There are pictures of my build there.

I have a CQB compact and a 5" Alloy frame bobtail CQB. They are outstanding guns. I have had a lot of semi-customs and consider them an excellent value. You won't regret it.

^plus lightening cuts make awesome cocking serrations. and make your gun look cool
I am having the gun Tri topped, slots cut in the flats, and the slide internally lightened. I will post pics when it is finished. BTW, Jeff Abernathy is doing the work.
-
Guns that have been lightened only get dirty at marginally faster rate, not really a factor in the shooting we do. I clean my guns every 3-5k and have no problems. If you were in a windy and sandy place you mite need to clean more often, but that would be true for any gun.
Hope this Helps
Adam
I agree. I couldn't see "dirt" being much of a problem on a game gun.
-
Thanks everyone. Just wanted to confirm before I gave the go ahead.
-
Can anyone tell me if there are actually any limits regarding lightening the slide on a 2011 for Limited? I looked at the rules and I didn't see anything. Just want to make sure I didn't overlook something. Thanks!

I really like that dust cover and the non-undercut trigger guard. Very nice blaster. Enjoy to your hearts content. may it eat all your reloads and hit all you aim it at.
JZ
Same here. If you guys keep posting these pictures, it's gonna cost me.

I do a visual inspection and then drop the round in a gauge, for ALL my match ammo. No exceptions!
I normally inspect all rounds visually and by feel for primer depth. I think I may start gauging them all from now on. No longer than it would take it

This is an example of excellent parenting. Based on your son's behavior after the fact, it is obviously not the first example. Good on both of you.

had a death jam on the very last stage Area 2 last year, either due to a screwed up .38SC round, an extraction issue or both. cost me a pile of points. I had decided to forgo ammo inspection since I never had an ammo related malfunction to that point with that gun after thousands of rounds. Murphy came up and bit me hard on my ass.
Really sucks when you just---can't---get----the--- dang---thing- cleared, doesn't it.
yeah, it sucked big time and there were some F-bombs being dropped
Same here. I didn't even realize I said them. My buddies were laughing their butts off at me.

This weekends IPSC match...
I Wednesday night I broke the decapping pin on my 40 dies in my Dillion 1050. This in turn with my total lack of finesse created a whole host of problems with my press. ( I have been called a gorilla)
So, during the Friday night scramble to make ammo, I got in a hurry and didn't inspect each loaded round as they were boxed up. Needless to say Ii missed a severely dented case. Second shot on the first stage, my STI locks up tight.
Took me over 20 seconds to clear the malfunction and get the gun running again.
I won't skip the inspection again.

This might help you...

I finally got a chance to call and talk with Bob, today. He told me he would send me another sight. That is outstanding customer service and wasn't expected at all. I offered to pay for another one and he wouldn't hear of it.
He doesn't know it yet, but that $39.00 gesture today, sold a custom build for him in the next couple months.
-
Call Bob and let him know the situation. I accidently smacked one of his front sights on a port. Told Bob what an idiot I was. Bought a new one from him. He told me to bring the broken one to him and he would replace it No Charge. Can't say he'll do it for you but he is a great person to deal with. That's one reason I purchased a new Limited gun from him.
Good to know. I like dealing with folks like that.

Seen this happen when a something got in with the powder too. Had a 9mm bullet in there somehow and it caused this type of stuff. You have dumped everything out of it right?
JT
Sure did. Nothing in there. I did notice , today at the range, my last batch of loads with the Clays were REALLY smokey. On the plate rack, after 4 plates, I literally couldn't see 5 or 6. Don't remember Clays being that smokey. I wonder if they powder is damp or something.
-
Sounds like you tried to put a .330x65 in a .300x60 dovetail. Should have called Bob.
I should have. It was late last night though and I was impatient. The package is marked correctly for my gun. I didn't measure the site before I started filing.
-
You guys are going to make me call Infinity.
-
A reloader expert of mine told me to find an old electric razor and tape it to the powder measure. Fixed it for me using Varget.
Terry
That is pretty funny. A buddy of mine told me to tape an aquarium pump to the powder measure. I am going to mess with it again tomorrow and see if any of these suggestions help. Thanks everyone.
New Limited gun finished!

Then Jeff set the mill up for the lightening slots we had agreed on.

<oftoday, the gun went off to hard chrome. Should have it back next week. Then I will be doing some custom grip work and a few more things. I will post the final product pics when it is done.
