Thought some might be interested in a review of the custom 2011 USPSA Limited gun I am having built by Jeff Abernathy. It started it's life with me as a used STI Eagle in 40 S&W.<br While the gun ran well, I thought there was room for improvement. I started my search for a reputable 2011 expert on the east coast. After much research, and seeing a custom build in this months Combat Handguns I contacted Jeff Abernathy in Mt. Holly NC. http://abernathygunworks.com/ https://www.facebook.com/pages/Abern...64135597035219 Jeff was very personable and invited me to come visit his shop about 1.5 hours from me. I took him up on his offer. I am glad I did. No CNC machines, just a basement shop in Mt. Holly NC. Now this shop is filled with Bridgeport Mills, lathes, and all the finest machine shop equipment money could buy... in 1952. I LIKE it. It was then, that I found out Jeff was the son of the famous Tommy "Tommy Guns" Abernathy. He took over the business when his father passed in 2008. Enough bio, on to the guns.

I actually use a drop of blue on mine. It is a little more difficult to remove to change the spring, but not big deal to me.

Excellent decision. Congrats!

This is where I stand as of Saturday. Off to hard chrome this week. If anyone is interested, Jeff has a new facebook page. There are pictures of my build there. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Abernathy-Precision-Gun-Works/164135597035219

Wilson Combat SDS worth it for a beginner?
Shadyscott999 replied to brent_strong's topic in 1911-style Pistols
I have a CQB compact and a 5" Alloy frame bobtail CQB. They are outstanding guns. I have had a lot of semi-customs and consider them an excellent value. You won't regret it. -
I am having the gun Tri topped, slots cut in the flats, and the slide internally lightened. I will post pics when it is finished. BTW, Jeff Abernathy is doing the work.
-
I agree. I couldn't see "dirt" being much of a problem on a game gun.
-
Thanks everyone. Just wanted to confirm before I gave the go ahead.

Can anyone tell me if there are actually any limits regarding lightening the slide on a 2011 for Limited? I looked at the rules and I didn't see anything. Just want to make sure I didn't overlook something. Thanks!

Same here. If you guys keep posting these pictures, it's gonna cost me.

I normally inspect all rounds visually and by feel for primer depth. I think I may start gauging them all from now on. No longer than it would take it

This is an example of excellent parenting. Based on your son's behavior after the fact, it is obviously not the first example. Good on both of you.

Really sucks when you just---can't---get----the--- dang---thing- cleared, doesn't it. yeah, it sucked big time and there were some F-bombs being dropped Same here. I didn't even realize I said them. My buddies were laughing their butts off at me.

This weekends IPSC match... I Wednesday night I broke the decapping pin on my 40 dies in my Dillion 1050. This in turn with my total lack of finesse created a whole host of problems with my press. ( I have been called a gorilla) So, during the Friday night scramble to make ammo, I got in a hurry and didn't inspect each loaded round as they were boxed up. Needless to say Ii missed a severely dented case. Second shot on the first stage, my STI locks up tight. Took me over 20 seconds to clear the malfunction and get the gun running again. I won't skip the inspection again.

Fitting Brazzos Front Sight...
Shadyscott999 replied to Shadyscott999's topic in General Gunsmithing
I finally got a chance to call and talk with Bob, today. He told me he would send me another sight. That is outstanding customer service and wasn't expected at all. I offered to pay for another one and he wouldn't hear of it. He doesn't know it yet, but that $39.00 gesture today, sold a custom build for him in the next couple months. -

Inconsistent Powder Throws
Shadyscott999 replied to Shadyscott999's topic in Dillon Precision Reloading Equipment
Sure did. Nothing in there. I did notice , today at the range, my last batch of loads with the Clays were REALLY smokey. On the plate rack, after 4 plates, I literally couldn't see 5 or 6. Don't remember Clays being that smokey. I wonder if they powder is damp or something. -

I should have. It was late last night though and I was impatient. The package is marked correctly for my gun. I didn't measure the site before I started filing. -
You guys are going to make me call Infinity.

Inconsistent Powder Throws
Shadyscott999 replied to Shadyscott999's topic in Dillon Precision Reloading Equipment
That is pretty funny. A buddy of mine told me to tape an aquarium pump to the powder measure. I am going to mess with it again tomorrow and see if any of these suggestions help. Thanks everyone. -
Anyone have any experience fitting one of these? By the time I filed enough off the bottom, the base was paper thin and it would still barely start in the dovetail. I tried to tap it in, and I really mean "tap" . The the base folded like paper. I know this one is trash now. Luckily I had a spare STI competition sight on hand. The STI sight only took 2-3 passes with the file and went right in. The package from Brazzos is marked STI/SVI. I wonder if it was maybe packaged wrong .

Inconsistent Powder Throws
Shadyscott999 replied to Shadyscott999's topic in Dillon Precision Reloading Equipment
The only thing that has changed is the power measurement.. I checked everything I can think of. I think I have a couple pounds of N320 left. I may try loading some up with that and see if the problem persists. It really doesn't make any sense. I have loaded 5-6K with the original charge of clays. -
My 1050 has suddenly started throwing wildly. I am loading 40 Lite using Clays. I have been loading 3.2 grains under a PD 180 FMJ. I recently got an STI that won't run with that light a load, even with an 11# spring. Sooooo, I upped my charge to 3.5 grains and the gun runs fine. Problem is, the press will throw 3.5 ten times in a row, then will throw 3.8 ten times and then, 3.2 ten times. I have tried tapping on the hopper etc. I took the powder measure off and the inside of the hopper( the aluminum part) is corroded and rough. I tried to sand and polish it out with only marginal results. Anyone have any suggestions? I am about ready to go back to VV320 if I can't get Clays to work better.
