  1. I don't use any case lube when I reload 40. I do find that if I have a batch of both nickel and brass together that I am reloading, the nickel takes less force to size on my 550. I have access to 1000's of nickel once-fired Glock brass so that is my primary reason for using it. It seems in my experience that the nickel cleans up easier in less time in the tumbler also.

  2. Most people will buy these and be no better for it. TGO and Travis T both shoot standard steel frame hi-cap pistols and beat everyone like a drum. A back-bored barrel will do nothing for anyone's mastery of the fundamentals, and IMO, that's all that really matters anyways, and what creates victories.

As long as it meets the rule requirements, who cares.

  3. I think the Caspian hi-cap frames look and feel sweet. I would have built my new limited gun on a high-cap frame, but without a reliable, durable mag source it was a no-go. If they finally step up and get 18+ .40 mags available again, I think we will see an upsurge in the Caspian representation. Until then, it's a risky premise to build a $1800 Limited gun on a frame which may or may not have mags available.

  4. Hello,

I shot my first GSSF match on August 13th, 2005. They posted the scores very quickly and due to my placing in the Amateur Guardian Division, it appears I will be awarded a Glock Pistol. I was just wondering how long it takes for them to post the prize lists and send out the prizes (pistol vouchers?)? Just eager to get a new gun and start shooting some IPSC production with it.

  5. I taught a basic Glock school for some new recruits on our department. Towards the end, I had them shoot a steel IPSC size target at 15 yds, 10 rds slow enough to get ten hits. Most were about 60-70% successful. Then back to 25 yds, same thing. 35 yards, 45 yds and then finally 50 yds. It's great to watch the look on there face when they are ringing the steel at 50 yds, fairly consistently. I then move them all the way back up to 15 yards. Most comment that it seems like they are now shooting at a barn door. When they do shoot, it's DING, DING, DING ten times in a row and a lot faster then when they started. A real confidence inspiring drill. Shows them that it's the perception of the size of the target that changes, not it's actual size.

  6. I shot one just last week at our police range. Very controllable, even with rapid fire strings. Recoil was barely noticeable even with 9mm Gold Dot Loads. Only gripe was as a left hander, every round was stippling my face with carbon and powder from the ejection port. Of course, that didn't stop be from sending 5 mags worth down range. Also, the one I fired had a barrel shroud covering the exposed portion of the barrel, making the weapon much more tolerable looking than without it.

  7. Mags are a serious issue with the Caspian Hi-Caps. Apparently they can't get mags manufactured for their platform and Craig mags are very rare and old. Travis Tomasie makes mags for it by assembling them from a mixture of parts.

  8. UPDATE: Finished this season using the gun. Helped me take high A Limited at Nationals and Area 2. The MOST reliable firearm I have ever owned. Runs and runs and is still vault tight and just as accurate. I am a believer in having custom guns built to your specifications. Few things in life are as satisfying.

I was really happy with my switch from my STI Executive to my Para P-16. Steel frames and I are just a better fit. The Para however, did not have the fixed sights I wanted and I wanted less of a chance of frame cracking in the future. I chose to get a Springfield Hi-Cap forged frame and have Rich Dettlehouser of Canyon Creek Firearms build my 40 limited gun.

Just received this a week ago. I am blown away by the work that Rich put into building this gun for me. It started as a Springfield GI .45 WW2 model. I stripped it for the frame and all the other parts will be a future project gun of mine. Added to the frame I sent Rich were these parts:

STI slide - .40SW barrel - guide rod - firing pin, Heinie Rear Sight, Novak Front Sight, AFTEC extractor, C&S Ultra Match kit, S&A Para Magwell, and S&A Beavertail.

Rich fitted all the parts and flat topped the slide, added front serrations (STI Stylee), and put the SV trigger together using some parts he had, and some I sent him.

He was outstanding to work with. Great communication and insight as I made my parts selections. Very flexible about what he worked with. I sent the parts to him in the beginning of May and 6 weeks later it was in my impatient hands.

At the end, he had two very small pits in the ends of the welds on the new trigger guard, which he couldn't remove. They were both impercetible to my eyes. However Rich said he felt bad that he couldn't get them removed so he threw in an entire Gun-Kote on the pistol. That my friends, is some good business. Rich also added a couple of his own tweeks like adding a hole to the King's ambi safety to be able to remove it simply by lifting the right side after the slide is off, instead of swinging it all the way down.

The grips are skateboard tape I added over the stock Springfield plastic grips.

Limited perfection in my eyes. I highly recommend Rich's 1911 work to anyone!

  9. I've done that with a couple Ambi's i've installed and haven't had a problem as long as the mating surfaces are close and tightly fight together. Just make sure they aren't going to come apart. You want to make sure your safety is functional. Most of the brands seem fairly similar. I'm a big fan of the King's ambi's for their clean lines and the lack of a need to have the grip hold the safety on.
