  1. Does anyone run the 75gr? I've had good accuracy out of them but have had trouble finding any in loaded ammo. Also, had anyone tried xtreme's 55 grain fmj? They seem reasonable price wise

I use 55gr up close and 75gr Hornadys farther out. Used to use 69gr Sierras before the 75's. Best of both worlds, cheap stuff for up close and practice, and expensive stuff for distance. I'm sure I would do fine with the 55's out far, on a calm day. But the numbers don't lie, the heavier bullets resist the wind better. And less thinking on the clock trying to compensate for the wind is huge to me.

  2. The gas block is misaligned with the gas port on the barrel most likely. Ensure that there is some space between the shoulder on the barrel and the gas block and you should be good to go, ie the Syrac is not supposed to be flush with the shoulder.

  3. It is an excellent cartridge for things that bleed inside of 300yds. No great advantages for the 3 gun game but it hits on steel or easily determined. I would hate to leave good 6.8 brass on the range at a 3 gun match. My friend placed in top 3 at CMMG a couple of years in heavy optic using 6.8spc until rules changed to not allow 6.8spc in that division. Hits can be made to 400yds but bullet really starts to drop out at that range and slow down.

I haven't reloaded for mine yet but my shooter friend has and had great results. Sierra 110gr Pro Hunter are good on game and targets. My gun also likes 110gr Hornady Vmax but some barrels don't. Good bullets down to 85gr are available but would be expensive to throw in a shooting match. Bullets larger than 110gr are used by folks who can use suppressor.

Lots of powder choices 10X, H322, and H335 along with many others will work fine. Good powders for 223 will generally work for the 6.8. Your load/powder choice will depend a little on your barrel chamber and twist rate.

Lots of great loading and 6.8 information on the 6.8 Forums.

+1. 6.8 is less than ideal for 3 gun, but workable if you're willing to accept its shortfalls (mainly $$). My 6.8 shot really well with Reloder 10x. If I was using it for 3 gun I'd probably go with the Hornady 110gr HPBT since they are among the cheapest .270 bullets and have decent ballistics. Another option would be the 90gr Speer TNT.

  4. The clubs around here really need to coordinate a little better. There are rarely ever any 3 gun matches, and now there are 3 this weekend, Pinetucky in Augusta, Palmetto Gun Club in Charleston, and Sepsa in Yulee.

I would go to the Pinetucky match for sure if I wasn't already planning on going to the other two. I know a few other local guys that this applies to also.

I realize that these clubs put the 3 gun matches on when they can but a little scheduling deconfliction could lead to higher participation at all of them.

  5. The variance is likely due to differences in bullet OAL. Its common to see differences in bullet length especially with hollow point bullets. Some people trim the meplats for uniformity. As long as the bullets are seated to the same depth then it shouldn't be much of an issue. Another option if it bugs you is ballistic tip bullets.

If you shot 5 shots and saw a flyer, it probably wasn't a flyer...it was probably just part of a larger group. Shoot a group with more rounds and see what you get. I can get some pretty good 5 shot groups, but I tend to see more consistency with 10 shot groups.

  6. I spent a lot of time researching safes a few years ago and went with a Sturdy Safe. They are not as flashly as others but are very robust for the money. I preferred to put my money towards more steel.

  7. Powder is regularly available. Some types more frequently than others. Over the past 2 months I've been able to buy Powerpro 2000, Accurate #5, Varget, and BLC2. I just check online daily and move quickly when what I want comes in stock. The one powder I haven't seen in a while is Reloder 15.

Which powders are you looking for?

  8. Pat,

I went out today and shot 4 5-round groups with my 18" Criterion HBAR today at 100 yards. My load is the 75gr Hornady BTHP over 23.8gr Reloder 15, moving about 2600fps from my 18" Noveske. This load was worked up for the Noveske but still worked pretty well in the Criterion. I figure playing with the load a little could tighten it up a hair.

Average group size between the 4 is .968"

  9. Mark, I used to hang around with Richard Butell's son. He was the President of Fairchild. His son had a lot of the prototypes from Armalite, and I got to shoot quite a few of them. They had a magazine fed semi-auto shotgun, that was pretty cool and I have shot the AR-16 which was a varient of the AR-18 only in .308! and of course the A-5. cool stuff!

Rboyes!!! YESS!!! it was the Johnson!! Now what aboutthe impingment system??? anyone??

    MAS-40?

  10. Keep the powder charge from your major load and reduce the bullet weight. Go to a 155, 140, or 135gr bullet.

I found this worked better for me after I tried keeping the 180gr bullet and reducing the powder charge.

+1. I took my major load (200gr FMJ, 6.4gr AA #5) and switched to a 180gr bullet which gave me about 140 power factor. Then I went with a 155gr bullet and it was quite a bit softer still, though I haven't chrono'd it yet. Its nice not having to adjust the powder measure, just put a different bullet on top for USPSA or 3 gun.
