Did they not have them for a long time or something?

It was voted on during the 2001 General Assembly at the European Championships in Germany. I don't think the classification has been used much at Major matches, probably due to a lack of interest.

UK had its own classification based on match results from 'Graded Matches' held across the region. I suspect other countries may have their own systems too.

Like losing money on Nationals.. absolute incompetence.
Prestigious national match that can draw 500 people and lots of sponsors and you cant figure out how to turn a profit ?

If the sponsorship is paid in product it does not provide any financial benefit to the match.

If every sponsor provides product and not cash then the full cost of the competition must be met by entry fees or subsidy.

  3. It's important to start off with a simpler process and then add more functionality as technology improves. The cost could increase considerably as new functions are added.

The more complex it becomes the greater the chance of failure.

Tracking a golf-ball is easy, there's only one ball. Keeping track of hits on multiple targets that could be facing different directions would significantly increase the number of cameras, cost and reliability.

Honestly, I don't see the benefit of as-you-go scoring.

In golf, once the player hits the ball they don't do much, unless it ends up in the hole or a hazard. But with shooting the competitor is constantly moving so the attention is going to be on the competitor, not a running count of their score at the bottom of the screen.

chasing TV dollars completely ruined mountain bike racing, and probably many other sports as well

Chasing TV dollars is like a Coyote chasing a Roadrunner, it's never going to end well.

High speed internet is killing TV, independent content creation has never been more achievable than it is now.

  5. I don't think a running total of the hits is necessary, as long as the final score is available at the end of the video. And that's already feasible.

If you want all the editing between different cameras and as-you-go scoring then it's going to require a lot of work in post. The coverage would take days/weeks to hit the air.

Camera resolution is dependent on whether you want live coverage or not though I think 1080 is the minimum.

As to viewing numbers, I hit over 30,000 unique IP addresses during the 2014 World Shoot. With access to better cameras and higher bandwidth a much higher quality product could dwarf those numbers.

  6. We don't need TV for match coverage, and YouTube is not necessary for streaming. We don't need to show every competitor shooting every stage, just like we don't see every golfer on every hole at the US Masters.

I was providing live coverage of matches over 11 years ago, the technology and bandwidth have improved significantly since then. Adding scores, leaderboards and commentary is all achievable.

I've heard estimates for costs over $250,000, it's more likely to be less than 10-15% of that, mostly on equipment that could be used for several years.

  7. The banners and stuff at matches are essentially worthless without media coverage. As @shred stated, only those people at the match will see them.

Banners are typically placed where they can be seen by participants and spectators, but they should be placed where they are most visible to downrange cameras. This way both the shooters face and the banner are visible.

A frontal shot of a competitor is more dynamic and will result in a more usable and commercial image.

Hosting live coverage of Nationals is achievable (including commentary and live scoring). The way it's being done now is horrible.

Using a free service such as YouTube is not recommended, they frequently censor channels/people that they disagree with. It's not necessary either. Web hosting that offers unlimited bandwidth and streaming is a better solution.

It could be broadcast live and then available for purchase afterwards if people wanted a permanent copy. This would increase revenue and provide for a ROI for sponsors.

  8. USPSA is funding  Nationals due to the way that the sponsorship is handled. I think the prize table should be abolished, sponsorship should be in the form of cash not prizes.

The money is applied to the match, stage props, targets, facilities, awards dinner etc..

This is how IPSC does it and it works.

If a sponsor wants to provide prizes in addition to cash then those prizes can be used in raffles.

  9. I think it used to be decided by the number of A's but it's not in the current rulebook.

IPSC allows for the MD to nominate a stage to be reshot by tied competitors if necessary. It doesn't change the points but just determines placement order.

  10. Nationals will continue to lose money until the match sponsorship process is changed.

if members want confidence that even use is being spent wisely then a full budget/audit (including receipts) should be published. This would help to quell (or perhaps confirm) any rumors or conspiracy theories regarding expenses.

  11. Some advertisers may prefer printed ads, it's possible that advertising revenue may decline if the magazine moved to an online format. However, if the cost of producing content for an online magazine was less than that reduced revenue then it would be worthwhile switching over.

I've yet to see a good format for online magazines, but I think it might be worth investigating.

They still have the problem of producing good content.

and yep for whatever reason the magazine printing and mailing costs have greatly increased,

I'm not convinced that the increase is solely related to printing/mailing. I suspect that costs related to Nationals/staff have been transferred to magazine costs.

  13. Designing stages is not easy, especially if one jumps right in to designing 32 round courses.

My suggestion would be to start with short courses, 9-12 rounds. Figure out all the basics, then go to the medium 12-20 round stages. Field courses will be easy after mastering the first two.

Of course, you may run into the problem of match directors that want 32 rounds stages on every berm.

  14. The classifier fees pay for the classification system, probably several times over as the system is mostly automated. It used to be done manually.

Advertising revenue was once enough to more than cover the cost of the magazine (it used to make a net profit). For some reason the cost has exploded over the past few years.

The activity fees are the result of literally thousands of man-hours of work by the membership, designing and building stages, running matches, officiating, maintaining props etc.

Are the members getting value for all that money/work? Probably not.

Is the situation going to improve? Probably not.

I often wonder how much revenue other IPSC regions are pulling in each year, and how they manage to run the sport within the confines of that income.

I have nothing against single stack.  Just doesn't make sense to do with current course design.

    Agree completely.

I see SS as a legacy division that showcases the origin of the sport. The stages that PASA park ran for the SS Nationals each year were designed around the platform and were similar to those used when the sport first began.

Trying to use a SS 1911 at most L1 (or any non-specific match for that matter) is like trying to put a square peg in a round hole.

Eventually SS, like Revolver is going to fade away. I think the success or failure of any division is determined mostly by stage design at L1 matches.
