    That’s awesome!

somewhere else on the internet, in another thread, somebody posted pics of when they used to do Man vs. Man shoot offs back at Piru.

I am assuming the World Shoot doesn't do that any more????

How did they used to have those Piru Man vs. Man shoot offs set up?

    Plate racks?

    Poppers?

Hey Nolan- You've only seen me shoot a rifle once in a Steel Challenge event, at the 2019 Area 2 when I was testing the Briley Raptor rifle. Life is too short not to shoot Open! 😉

Mike Dalton, of all people, understands how long guns are affecting the growth, direction, focus & financial bottom line of sport. 🤔 Mike, as do I and the other "dinosaurs" who were fortunate to experience the golden years in Piru, also appreciates & respects the origins, history & legacy of what the Steel Challenge was meant to be. 😔

yep, Piru-remember those days.  but it all started at canyon country, Jim.  there are still dinosaurs roaming the range.

    Yeah, I noticed that too.

I did get to see an iron sighted revolver guy have to do a reload during a Smoke and Hope string.

    Ouch!

    That’s gotta hurt!

Anywhoooo.... it just got to the point where if I saw some shooter walking up to the line and setting a “long gun” bag on the table, I went surfing elsewhere on the internet for a minute or two.

Yep, thank the beard for turning a world class event into the county fair.  Mike & Mike would be puking their guts out seeing what this sh&t show has become. And yes, I shot the challenge from 84 thru around 2001.

They should just end CO and Production and bring back a variation of Modified, run it with irons and you can use a longer magazine, using an optic would reduce the length of magazine that will fit in the box.

    • Double/Action or striker fired only
    • 9mm for Minor, .40+ for Major
    • Frame mounted, or slide mounted optic and/or iron sights
    • Gun must fit in the box with empty magazine inserted (slide parallel to longest edge of the box).
    • No weight limits, as long as it fits in the box do what you want.
    • No IWB, this is a sport not tactical training (if you want to point a loaded gun at your genitals or carotid artery then do it someplace else).

    Ditch Revolver, and L-10

This leaves us with Open, Limited, Modified, Single Stack

great idea, but the Beard will never let that happen.  he likes 50 divisions so he can tout a classification in each.

So I shot a match today, and between stages 2 and 6, the weather started to get really bad - alternating between drizzles and bursts of steady rain.  I figured what the heck, everyone else is dealing with it it's the luck of the draw whether your turn has a weather hazard.

Only afterward did I notice that a sub-squad of competitors, who shall go unnamed, decided to wait out the rain and shoot their stages near the end of the event after the sun had come out and most other squads had finished shooting.

Is this against the rules?  One would think that if you are not with your squad and ready to shoot at the appointed time, you would forfeit that stage.  No making it up later when conditions are ideal.

was the aforementioned sub-squad summarily beaten after the match?  asking for a friend...

Speaking of white dress shirts LOL!  I miss seeing Ray's white shirt flapping in the breeze and his toes hanging out of his cut-up tennis shoes.  We once threatened to burn the shirt once at an Area match in Oregon on the last day after 3 days of 100+ degree temperatures.

ray was one of a kind-pioneered the upside down c-more.  tragic death to this day.

Quantico Shooting Club has a pretty clever solution for this: they take a length of braided steel cable that's about the distance from the shooting box to the back target, and that serves as a reference distance for the rear of the stage.  Then they mark off cross-sections at the distances indicated in the stage diagram for the targets that are off the centerline, and attach cables of appropriate distance there.  When it's done, they just roll up the cable and throw it in a box, and it makes for easy and accurate stage measurements every single time.

For example: on Smoke and Hope they have a 42' center cable, then two cross-cables at 21' and 27'.  Those two cables measure out to 14' on each side for the near targets, and 9' each side for the far targets.

I may not be describing it perfectly, but it's a really ingenuous solution.

kinda what i used to do many moons ago when i actually practiced the match.  made a graphic layout of the stages at the time (1999), laid out the marked rope and would place a stage down, shoot it for score, then reset to the next stage.  would shoot the match cold, twice each day.
