For next year either one of the first 2 may work depends on the build time. I hear SVI is somewhere around 14-18 months at this point

Thanks all, looks like i'll be selling my IDPA gun to get the dillon lol... I'm trying to justify the 650 over the 550 right now but I'm not sure if I need that Mich machine since i'll only be reloading for .40, I like the idea of the auto indexing better though...

Again thanks for the wealth of knowledge that this forum brings. I'm going to start loading only one caliber (.40) at this time. I'd like to load around 500-1000 per month. I don't have too much time with my daughter at home so ideally I'd be able to sneak in a couple hours every couple weeks to make what I need for the monthly matches.

Thanks all for the replies. I appreciate all the info. I was sold on the dillon originally but then saw the price difference so i decided to ask around about the other options...

Other than a tumbler, scale, and caliper. Other than that, I'm starting from scratch. I'm going to start loading .40 initially, may do 9 in the future as well but that would be further down the line.

I'm finally going to get into reloading... I would like some guidance. I know this forum primarily pushes big blue but saw that the Hornady LNL has received some good reviews as well. I'd like to hear recommendations one way or another that will help me in making my decision. thanks in advance.

Bobby keigans (freedom gunworks) has it in his sub forum

I have it and like it, if I were to buy one again, it would probably be the SV magwell
A lot of people like the techwell too.

Split the difference go 171 or 172

Put a 12lb recoil spring and a tungsten guide rod (not sure what kind of competition you are using it for, can't use this in IDPA)

When do you take the safety of on a glock, MP, xd, cz with hammer down? If your finger us going into the trigger guard before your ready to shoot that is the issue not when you deactivate the safety. If you have good trigger discipline then when you deactivate the safety is irrelevant

- Buy any 9mm 1911
- Buy a bunch of reputable mags (Wilson, Dawson or Tripps)
- Work up load and play with springs until the gun almosst runs.
- Send gun, mags, ammo and $500 to a good 1911 'smith.
Wish I was joking. Anyone who considers a 40/9mm to be competition ready out of the box is either damn luck or in serious denial.
I must be in the lucky crowd. I have an STI sentry that I only had one malfunction with and that was only because I didn't inspect the defective round before I put it in the mag before the stage.

Anyone do any experimenting with 126mm .40 mags to gain additional capacity while keeping reliability? clipping coils, changing guts, and basepads etc.?

For your entertainment...

I don't care about the safety. I want to know where to get a friend like that!

the Burris Pepr mounts are pretty good, a friend of mine picked one up for his burris optic and he likes it.

I was on the fence of taking the test (took it last night). My main reason was because I don't know how involved I will be in this sport in the future. I've worked a bunch of major matches in the past with a great crew of guys. I will help out at matches if the need arises but I got bit by the bug from the other game so the limited time that I do have will probably be spent slinging more rounds down range
-
Thanks, guys, that's what I was thinking. I was thinking about picking one up and wasn't sure if I should bother with that. 3inches at 50yards is pretty damn good if you ask me(probably better than I can shoot anyways. Haha).
-
Do you think it is needed or worth the cost? purpose is for idpa, USPSA
-
Go with the Wilson, dropped right into my sti with no fitting required and has been reliable (some of the other ones I tried had prematurely locked the slide back with rounds left in the mag and this was on a single stack 9)
-
Considering you can get a brand new one in .40 for around 2k with only one mag. Depending on the shape of the one you are looking at I would think its a pretty good deal.
-
i don't think so, if so then my STI Sentry is out. flat top is a standard slide finish with no "competitive" advantage

Anywhere you see metal touching metal

I am a fan of the dp ice magwell and the SVI magwell but the basepads are just about flush with the bottom of the magwell

I was told to use 1 spring for the first 5k rounds and then add the second
