  1. The current M&P thread is so long, it is difficult to find specifics.

I am interested in the upgrades that folks are making - trigger jobs, sights, ect. I am primarily interested in work that will stay Production and IDPA legal.

    Thanks.

  2. It seems ot me that "cover" must mean "cover from targets not yet engaged." I have shot stages where you draw or pick up the gun and engage a very close target or two. For example, starting seated at a desk and picking up the gun from the desk and engaging 2 targets just on thee other side of the desk. Then you move aroung the desk and past those targets to a window or wall, which is cover from the next targets. However, the first targets engaged are not behind any cover, and may be "standing" directly behind the shooter as he engages the next array. So, being exposed to engaged targets cannot necessarily mean someone is not behind cover.

To take it a step further, let's say that the shooter cannot see the 2nd array (and they can't "see" him) as he moves from the desk to the window. Is he behind cover as he moves? Technically, I think he is, and therfore he can reload. But I also see how you could say he is moving from one cover position to another, so therefore he cannot reload. I like the argument that he can reload better, but I see the other side.

This is a great discussion. I'm learning a lot about IDPA.

  3. It seems to me that the walls of the now empty room are cover, whether you are standing in the middle of the room, standing at the edge of a doorway into the room or leaning against one of the walls. What difference does it make so long as there is a barrier between you and "live" targets?

If reloading on the move is allowed, then "cover" must include lateral visual barriers.

  4. I have been told by people who think they have reason to know that storing full will not hurt the springs. I don't practice this myself, but I have left a 9mm MP-5 Beta Mag loaded for several months by accident and it did not seem to cause a problem, at least in the short run.

  5. Having established that one can move and re-load behind cover, I agree the issue is what is cover. IMHO (which really is humble as far as IDPA goes), a visual barrier is cover, unless the stage description says it is not. Leaving it up to the SO is not fair to anyone, including SOs, since few if any SOs can really be expected to know all the rules of IDPA, at least at local matches.

Likewise, it seems that a miss is a miss and a failure to neutralize is a failure to neutralize, steel or paper, whether one moves/reloads in front of the target thereafter or not. Unless the stage description says otherwise, of course, in which event a procedural would be added to the other penalties.

Again, this is just what makes sense to me, unless there is something specific to the contrary in the rules.

  6. I see the application of the "no reload" rule when moving from one point of cover to another, where there is a "no cover" zone in between. I do not see how moving from one point behind cover to another point behind the same cover precludes a reload. Is this addressed in the IDPA rules? I guess the issue is: Can you reload while moving as long as you are continually behind the same cover?

  7. OK. Say you have a "L" shaped hallway. There are three paper targets at your end of the hall way, which you engage first. There are 2 paper targets at the end of the hall, just before the hall turns left at 90 deg. You engage those 2 targets and then move toward them. Here is where I would re-load. When you turn left there are other targets, which you engage from around the corner (which is your cover). What difference is there in your "cover" between moving down the hall toward the neutralized targets and standing at the corner? You are exposed to the neutralized targets at the end of the hall anyway you look at it. Why can't you reload while moving down the hall? How is that different from re-loading at the corner?

If this is not a possible IDPA stage, then never mind.

  8. This issue came up in our local match last weekend. I believe different ROs called it differently. It can make a difference. My call was that neutralized targets are neutralized and a visual barrier is cover unless otherwise specified, so RWR is OK. But then I'm easy and not an official IDPA RO anyway.

  9. Dawson has a new Ice magwell for small frame glocks. However, I had to grind down the plastic insert to get it to work with any mag extensions.

I have also had problems with several heavy Glock magwells in getting them to hang on ot the rather flimsy stock well.

  10. Being an East Tennessee hillbilly, I'm surprised you all can even have 3 guns in Southern Kalifornia, much less shoot 'em. I'm mighty glad to hear that is not the case!

Seriously though, my son will be going to Pepperdine Univ (Malibu) this fall, so I hope to time a visit sometime with a match. Is there a link for 3-Gun in the LA area? I'm not really sure what area you natives consider being in Southern California. Since I'll have to fly and drag along all the gear, I'd want to shoot a fairly big match (stages and round wise).

Any links or references to some matches would be appreciated.

  11. I would think there would still be some call for mag wells, mag extensions, etc for the XD. That would be a good set up for some 3 Gun matches. Also, some people choose to shoot Minor for Limited. I know a mallet-headed ogre who can kick most folks' butt in Limited with a 9mm Glock.

I'm sure it is only a matter of time before we see lots more XD bells and whistles

Oh yeah ... what about sights? What's the latest word on after market XD sights?

  12. Is anybody shooting the XD in Limited?

Are mag extensions and/or magwells available?

What after market sights are recommended? Heine rear and Dawson optic in front?

I'm weighing the differences as to a Glock 34 (which I can't seem to find new at the moment).

  13. Thanks for the tip, but it does not work for me. When I tighten the bottom screw it pulls the back of the magwell up and the front of the magwell down. Then none of the base pads work. I am thinking of steepening the angle of the brass plug so it will angle the front of the magwell up as it is tightened. Anybody try this before? I hate to invent the wheel and probably ruin a plug.

  14. No, no split in the back. If I push the magwell up on to the front strap, the mags fit, but if it just hangs, none of my mags with base pads work -Grams, Dawson and Arrendondo. However, the mag well will not stay pushed up. I was thinking it was supposed to catch.

  15. I am having a problem. I removed a JP alum magwell from my Glock 35 and put on a Novak stainless steel. It would slip off the front strap when I tightened the screws, resulting in not being able to seat a mag (with any basepad). In other words, it would not catch on the front strap. I removed it and put the JP back on, and now the JP won't hang on the front strap, either, resulting in the same problem. It seems like the bottom of the front strap may be bent in. After studying the Glock front strap, I'm surprised any mag well will stay on. Any suggestions?

  16. I took a shooting course from Todd Jarrett this past weekend. He highly recommended using electronic muffs. He said based on his experience (considerable) that with plugs only sufficient sound enters from below and behind the ears to cause damage. Most muffs cover the problem area. Obviously, using plugs with muffs would provide the best protection, but hearing is diminished.
