  1. Since Defensive Edge no longer does this modification, we are left to fend for ourselves. My latch is pretty loose after 5 years of shooting and started causing problems. Instead of installing a thicker retaining clip, I thought I’d try doing the modification myself. Does anyone have a parts list of what’s needed for this so I don’t have to do a trial and error at the hardware store? Also, does anyone know the exact location on the receiver to drill out the old latch retainer stud (with respect to the trigger assembly holes)?

  2. As usual, it was a great match and went smoothly which is expected if there isn't any snow. I agree with Tom. They need to so something about those long range rifle targets. Painting between squads would have been nice if time allowed. When I shot stage 5, there was one flasher that blended in very well with the saddows behind it. I couldn't see it with my scope so I just shot in the general vicinity and luckily got it.

It was great they brought out the door you shot with your shotgun but I do miss the roller coaster.

It was great shooting with Nils on his first 3 gun match. That kid tore it up. Not bad for shooting a borrowed rifle and learning he's going to shoot the match only 10 days before the match and having no practice. With all that, he got 2nd in TI.

  3. I have 2 or the DPMS 45 rounders. They both have the weld slag on the interior, but not enough to have caused any problems. Both have been 100%. The slag won't allow use of Magpuls, but they've been great without them.

I have a DPMS 45'er and was thinking about putting a Magpul follower in it......has anyone made this combo work ?????

I've gotten a Magpul to work in a DPMS 45 rounder. It took some sanding but it's possible. The green follower that came with the magazine was also sanded. Another thing that works is a CMMG stainless steel follower. No modification was required to make it work.

  4. I have been using a PMI 40 rounder for 3-4 years and it's been 100%. I replaced the follower with a Magpul and the spring with an ISMI. I also use a Magpul ranger plate to protect it when dropped. I only get 38 in there but when I need more, I use a DPMS 45 rounder which has been 100% the dozen times I've used it.

  5. I've been wanting to make one of these for years and finally decided to do it this past weekend after seeing recent threads and pictures of the "Cat Tail". Just in time for the SMM3G.

My other hobby is woodworking so I have a belt/disk sander, grinder, drill press, router table and oscillating spindle sander which came in handy. I also have a small Sherline mill. It started out a a block of 1/2" thick aluminum. My woodworking tools were able to carve away at it with a little elbow grease although a majority of the hacking was done with a hack saw. A lot of the work was free hand and it wasn't fun especially when things got hot. All that is left is to bead blast it and put on a coat of black moly resin. It's pretty beefy but it only weighs a tad under 2oz.

  6. I use one of these:

It is all metal construction and doesn't damage the magazines but does put a death grip on them. I'm sure you can damage the mags if you tighten them more than you really need to. My friend and I have tried Arredondo's and we both had similar results - the mags slip no matter how much you tighten them. This is not cool when you're expecting a rock solid bipod and having to deal with a wobble. Yes, I also set the magazines at the same level. I only use this combo when going prone or if I shoot a stage where they expect you to do a "Tactical Reload". Most of the time I use the 40 or 45 rounder, and on the rare occasion, I've used my Beta mag.

  7. I'd recommend you get an ambi mag release, a 40, 45 round magazine or beta and keep the emergency mag in the back. Like others have stated, you shouldn't need to reload but at least you have a spare if you need to. I use to keep my spare rifle mag on my left side but ever since I grabbed the rifle mag for my pistol reload, I leave it in the back. I've got it on video as a painful reminder. If it's a rifle only stage, I keep it on the left side.

  8. I’m also a member of the cross dominance mutant group. While I use optics for rifle, I’m stuck using irons for my shotgun. I use my right eye for rifle and shotgun but have to close my left eye with the shotgun. I use the flip up cap on my rifle scope to cover my left eye so I can keep both eyes open. I’m fortunate that I can still see pretty clearly with my right eye but since you cannot, you might want to try shooting left handed.

There was one shotgun stage where we had to shoot weak handed and it was amazing how much better things looked using my dominant eye. Too bad it feels akward for me to shoot left handed.

  9. I wonder how they will hold up to being dropped on concrete. I know it would be a rare event. It looks pretty beefy. I like using Magpuls or ranger plates to protect my mags but I don't think they would be compatible with this magazine. I guess I could break out the duct tape and inner tubes. I wouldn't mind trying a 52 as an alternative to the Beta mag.

  10. I was about to send him my shotgun so I called him last week and got the bad news. I was planning on sending him my shotgun last year but never got around to it. He did mention he was planning on making the interceptor latch mod a kit for the do-it-yourself people but he didn't know when he'll get around to doing that.

  11. If money was a problem, I'd just get one 45 rounder. I use 30 rounders for backup. With a 40 or 45 rounder, you shouldn't need to reload in a standard stage unless you miss a lot. I can't remember any stages where I'd needed a 40 rounder for a reload. I don't like the long magazine sticking out of my mag pouch and jabbing into my rib cage. As for a super high capacity (MWG or Beta), I have a Beta and I only had to use it once in the almost 4 years of shooting 3 gun - the roller coaster stage at the SMM3G. I don't travel to matches or shoot the Iron Man but if you plan to, I think one of these are a must have.

  12. If there is a slight chance you think you might need the rail, get the tactical. I like the look of the tactical but I knew I'd never use the rail. I already had a custom Edge in 40 but most of the matches I shoot are 3 gun or steel so I decided to have a 9mm upper made and I'm very happy with that decision. The bullets are a cheaper than 40s and it is extremely flat and a blast to shoot. Here's a picture of mine.
