  1. I would recommend getting a Trubor and see if you will like shooting open. You can find a used one for about $2500-2800. It is a great starter gun and a way to find out what you like and what you don't like. I would hate to see you buy a custom gun out of the gate and not like it. See if you can borrow a gun for some range time practice.

My first gun was a Trubor, then a CK Arms Hardcore before I finally decided on my 2 Akai Custom Open guns. My last one was truly spec'd out with tungsten sleeved barrel and PT grips.

  2.
Umm 7.8 of wac is an insane load in 9mm and very hot even in 38 super.

9mm major will easily make pf under 7gn depending on bullet/oal ect.

Even 38 super will make major around 7.4-7.6. I know in my open 38 supers 7.8 would likely be 185pf+

I was talking about HS-6 only. Most guys I know who use it in STI style guns are at 8+ grains. I was not talking about WAC or CFE.

I don't want to run that hot. My friends say they run 8.9 HS-6 and get 175 PF. which is weird cause im getting 8.3 HS-6 at 175 PF. Is "B" picture okay though?

I would say for piece of mind; move to small rifle primers. I am at 8.3 of HS-6 and it my cases look like A.

I'm currently loading autocomp. 6.9 gr under Montana gold 124gr jhp. Working well in both my guns. Runs about 174 PF.

Wow. What type of gun are you running? For open, I have never seen anything under 7.8 grains.

I went with the MPX.  That said my two buddies run GMR-13s and there isn't a darn thing wrong with them.  Well, other than no ambi mag release and me being a lefty.  The MPX is an expensive option as others have said.  Sig appears to have just jacked their price up and at a minimum it needs a trigger and stock.  Mags are to my mind overpriced.  You either need to get the gas port opened if you want to shoot fast powders or just shoot slow powders.  I choose the latter.  That said (having changed to slow powders) I now have an extremely reliable, soft shooting PCC that runs 40 round mags like butter.  That works for me, but then I come from Open so every gun in this division is a bargain.  :-)

+1. As an Open shooter, I laugh at how cheap parts are for my MPX; I'm like give me two please (force of habit). I just switched to shooting CFE pistol and it is almost like cheating.

  6. You cannot go wrong with Akai. I have 2 Open guns from Akai and they are running like scalded dogs. I also have an Atlas Limited gun also. The thing about Shay is that he will build what you want but he will keep you out of trouble if you get to crazy. They have been busy with the Team guys getting them ready for the Optic Nationals but they are back in the shop now, Shay travels to support his guys and get feed back on the guns. I go to the shop a couple of times a month and they are always there; he will stand by his guns and fix any problems, I have had zero problems with my Open guns. You won't be sorry if you go with Akai, trust me!!!

You can absolutely load 9 major with 3N38 under a 124 MG JHP at 1.150"  Should be somewhere between 7.8-8.3gr to make ~170pf.

What is the max amount of 3N38 that you were able to get in a 9mm case?

I recently ordered an open custom gun from AKAI. I had to put a lot of money. Is he ok to do business with, or do I have to worry that I won't get my gun and loose my money.

You will be fine. I have an open gun on order with Shay & Speedy now and It can't get done fast enough (living close to the shop makes the wait even harder....lol) You have to remember they are busy as hell and Shay still has an open door policy at the shop while still getting guns completed. Also, with Nationals 2 months away they are probably putting in 18 hours days to get the team guys going, the local work and the orders out the door; not to mention Shot Show. Shay is a standup guy, just be patient you won't regret it.

  9. I have steel grips on my Atlas Gunworks Limited guns and I love it. It has reduced the recoil by at least 75% for me. I have the Phoenix Trinity aggressive grips on my limited gun. So people want them smooth but I like the aggressive feel for my shooting style. I would say give each one a few matches in different conditions and see which one performs better for you.

Don't hesitate.  Adam is a great guy who will take the time to discuss every aspect of your build and that doesn't stop after delivery.  Have a question.. just call, text or email him and he will take all the time in the world to answer it.  He is a shooter building guns for shooters.

I have bought two open guns from him this year.  Both are running like Swiss watches.  I do not keep exact round counts on my competition guns but the first one has over 10k  without a single issue.  The second has around 3k without an issue. The fit and finish are second to none.  Slide to frame fit is supper tight yet the slide glides like it is on ball bearings.  Accuracy is just what you would expect from a gun at this level.. less than 1 inch at 25.

One of my mbx mags was having an issue.  I called Adam and he walked me through tweaking the way the follower was sitting in the tube.  I told him I was heading out to the range to test things as I had a match coming up in a few days.  He told me don't hesitate to call him from the range if  the tweak didn't solve the issue no matter how late in the day it got.  I didn't need to call him back but it was nice to know he was there for assistance.

The only downside... you will want to order another one.. they are that good.  I am already thinking about my third.. this time a full custom 4 inch 2011 carry... just have to find the funds lol..

+1. I just got a Limited gun from Adam and it is amazing. I shot it for a practice match and it ran like it had 10K rounds through it. This gun is super tight but it runs like it is on glass. Whenever I called or email he got back to me very quickly. You can't go wrong with a gun from Adam.

  11. Some people round off the beaver tail. It doesn't change the handling of the gun or make it unsafe. A small amount and it will fit the box. I know will say this is cheating but each LimPro that comes from the factory does not have the same size beaver tail. I had two of them and each beaver tail was different.

  12. Any feedback on this powder- AA7 for 9 Major,

Any room left to seat the projectiles? or its gonna be a compressed load inorder to make major.

I'm on CFE PISTOL right now, although it will not fills up the case and easy to load to make Major, it not as flat as my HS7, btw my current load right now is 7.1 gr. of CFE, 121GR bullet with 1.150 oal. , and starting to exhibit some high pressure on the primers.

    thanks

I currently use CFE, I switch from HS-6 because it was way too dirty, try moving the OAL to about 1.160. You might have to go to 7.2 grains but it should stop the flat primers. I forgot to ask, what type of primers are you using?
