  1. First off let me apologize in advance if this topic has already been covered, the search engine didn't want to play tonight.

I bought a mildly used Super 1050 that came from the factory set-up for 38 Supercomp and has never been converted to any other caliber. From day 1 the casefeeder never fed quite right: approx 5-20 cases per hundred would be fed by the casefeed plunger too much to the right (cases were offset within the plunger to the right) and therefore would not feed correctly, if at all, into the shellplate. Numerous calls to Dillon ended up fruitless

On a whim I double checked the caliber conversion chart, and noticed that my press had a green casefeed adapter (38 Super style) but the cases had a lot of room within the adapter to move around (not good), so I called them to see if this was the right adapter for Supercomp, they said "No, you need the white 380 adapter due to the rim diameter of the Supercomp." So I go ahead and buy the white adapter, got it today, excitedly installed it, and voila the casefeeder won't feed at all now because the adapter is longer and the Supercomps are too tall to feed through it <_<

Ultimately I think the white adapter's smaller internal diameter will center the case better and fix my casefeeding issues, but only if I modify the adapter by shortening it.

Is there a better solution? What works for you?

  2. I have a tuned big stick Craig mag that last year ran 100% with the Caspian follower in backwards <_< This year it hasn't. This mag held 28 rounds and worked best with an ISMI spring. It had a Dawson +1 basepad fitted per Bucky’s instructions. I run Starline Supercomp & 38 Lapua brass.

This year the mag stopped running; frequent ftf’s were the norm. Installation of an Arredondo purple follower and associated spring for an SVI mag made the mag again function 100%. As an added bonus the mag now holds 29 rounds, it almost holds 30! And yes, it fits in the gauge (barely). This same follower and spring work 100% in another Craig big stick

As a side note I also tested the Grams follower/spring which ran in my primary Craig big stick, but not the other (less tuned) one.

  3. infinity,

To be honest with you I don't know how well I like it yet because I've only test-fired the gun once and I've been shooting nothing but Open for 1.5 years so any open sights seem very different. This is an experiment for me because all my other open sighted guns have more traditional serrated front sights.

  4. The EGW work on the frame took most of 2004. Matt finishing everything up took slightly over two monthes and that includes the gun being sent away for hard-chrome.

As stated above EGW is very busy and has a long wait list. Matt on the other hand is freshly back in the gunsmithing business and can turn a complete gun around quick.

How long did it take from start to finish for this beautiful project?

  5. .40AET: Nope, I don't have mags yet, and I kinda want to finish the season shooting my beat up Open gun. After this season the Open gun will go to Matt for a complete make-over. I figure by that time Caspian will have 40 mags on the market (I hope), and I'll have figured out how to properly tune them.

    eerw: You are very welcome.

Alan: You don't really need your mags back do you? :P Looking forward to your pics. I hope the checkering looks better than it sounded over the phone.

  6. I just had this gun finished up. It's a Caspian hi-cap done as a combined effort from EGW and Matt McLearn (M2i).

The frame was manicured by EGW. EGW did all the frame checkering (frontstrap, mainspring housing & underside of trigger guard) and filled in a few scope mount holes that were in the dust cover.

In February I sent the frame and a bag of parts to Matt McLearn. Matt did all the slide/frame/barrel fitting, slide work and tuned the trigger. He then sent it to Metaloy for hard-chroming. The slide to frame and barrel fitting of this gun are extraordinary! By far the best I've owned :) Matt tastefully checkered the rear of the slide and flat-topped & serrated the slide top.

I REALLY enjoyed working with Matt on this project. He's a super guy who won't settle for anything other than perfection; he wanted the gun done the way I wanted it, and he wanted it done perfectly (notice the slimmed weak side safety I requested due to my excessively high grip with my strong hand).

I've only had the gun out once, for a short session, but it ran great and I shot offhand 20 groups with it that were smokin', on par with my ultra accurate EGW singlestack 40.

    -Caspian hi-cap frame

    -ramped Schuemann UltiMatch bull barrel

    -STI slide

-Wilson rear sight with Enos style rear notch (Matt cut the notch)

    -Brazos fiber optic front sight

    -Aftec extractor

    -Limcat XL firing pin

-EGW slide stop & FP stop (the SV slide stop I sne to have fitted got flats worn on it during barrel fitting!!!!!)

    -SV full length guide rod

I want to say "Thanks" to Allan for letting me borrow the mags necessary for test-firing.

I hope to take better pics (outdoors) over the weekend, and will post them.

  7. Nemo,

I can completely relate. When I shoot a stage I usually can either recall nothing or only small visual glipses of the stage (for instance sometimes that's a landmark I used for movement or the sight of steel falling in my periperal vision as I engage the next target). Yet I definitely know if I fired a hoper shot, or if I had a mike, or if I had all good shots, and I could tell you which targets those shots were fired on (hopers or otherwise).

I worried for a long time about this apparent lack of visual clarity, but it actually is a lack of memory from the event. I'm envious of Sevigny who can replay stages in his mind, I can't. But Jack Barnes has described in these forums a similar lack of remembering, so that's comforting.

One more thing Nemo. What personality type are you? I'm an ISTJ which is a type that has a need for additionally visualization training (which I lazily don't do). You might want to pick up a copy of a book Brian recommended long ago, Choose Your Best Sport, which is now out of print; it helped me realize what my strengths and weaknesses were. I had a heck of a time finding this book.

    Hope this helps.

  8. Second though is that I read a book called "Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell and Ron Avery is mentioned near the end. This isn't the end all of books but it is a decent read. It's a business book - go figure????

Dang Jack, you just gonna leave us hangin' In what context was Ron mentioned?

BTW, I always enjoy your posts, and your honesty. Hope to meet you someday, but before we do I need to keep practicing so I can at least give you a run for your money :D
