  1. I got there before the WST was gone. I put 2 4lbs in my cart and then decided that between what's left of my open jug of WST, a near full 8lb of Clays, and nearly 16lb of Promo, I just don't need more WST right now. I don't think it does anything I can't do with Promo other than meter better.

    I applaud your restraint.

  3. Anybody watch the season finale last night. Wow!! Leftist elite taking control of the government, killing off the undesirables, all while painting the patriots as terrorists. I can't wait to see where the show goes from here.

I saw it. A good set up for the next season.

While sad for the Capt to lose his wife at the last second, it gives him more buy-in into the rest of the crew's woes. Also the fact she was basically murdered lets him play the avenging angel roll. Of course they link up with the patriots, get the ship and crew back, and likely swap some people around then take the cure on a world tour.

Given the implied politics, I'm suprised, in a good way.

  4. Not to beat the dead horse - but why would someone today consider the aluminum grip, when steel is available? Aluminum was the norm when we didn't have steel, but, at least in my view, steel is so superior that it seems natural to go for it.

Best deal for everyone - more money for the maker, and better feel for the shooter! :)

The horse is not dead, some applications need a lighter weight grip.

  5. Interesting discussion here. I'm considering a PT AL grip for a new build. I'd like to have it Type III Anodized. Anyone had this done or have any experience with it? I'm researching local shops (save on shipping) and prices but any words of wisdom are welcome.

  6. I've sent a question to HQ and I'll go by their answer.

Given the ambigious nature fo the issue and the IDPA approach of shooter gets benifit of the doubt its not an issue for me until / unless HQ issues a clairification.

  7. Rule 3.19.2 defines "weak hand only" as under the sole control of the non-dominate had. Holding the gun in your hand and inserting a mag with your strong hand is a "weak hand only" reload (opposite of strong hand only reload) - not permitted.

  8. It's unfortunate that the IDPA rulebook is so ambiguous on so many issues.

Who knows what the actual intent of the rulebook author was but I find it interesting that the language used on 6.21 is much stronger than the language used on 6.19 or 6.21.

Specifically it says in 6.19 and 6.20 that you cannot require a shooter to engage weak-hand/strong-hand only targets past specified distances however the language clearly would allow the shooter to take shots further back if they choose to take that option.

6.21 however clearly says that no weak-hand reloading "shall be permitted," not no weak-hand reloading "may be required."

This should be taken to mean that shooters are prohibited from performing weak-hand only reloads regardless of whether or not it was their choice.

6.19. No “strong-hand only” strings of fire may require the shooter to engage targets more than ten (10) yards distant.
6.20. No “weak-hand only” strings of fire may require the shooter to engage targets more than seven (7) yards distant.
6.21. No “weak-hand only” reloading shall be permitted. Exception: See Permanently Physically Disabled Shooters section.

That's basically how I read it.

  9. Yep I always took it to mean you couldn't be forced to do a weak hand reload but if you chose to do it, no problem. I chose to do one myself in a state match just this weekend.

To me the operative word is "permitted" not "required" thus "no 'weak-hand' loading permitted" means you can't do it.

I've not looked but is there a rule clairification that states otherwilse?

  10. Lots of switching hands back and forth is generally a bad idea because it introduces many more opportunities for safety issues.

Unfortunately the rule book really doesn't define what "weak-hand only" reloading is so I assume you will have a lot of interpretations.

IMHO the rulebook should also be more specific in prohibiting both strong and weak-hand shooting together in a single string.

This stage does have some issues.

Strong hand and weak hand shooting usually simulates the incapacitation of a limb so forcing both strong hand and weak hand in the same stage makes no sense.

What makes even less sense is starting with the strong/weak hand like this stages does and finishing with freestyle.

One simple way to make this stage more in line with both the rules and common sense is to start the shooter with the Freestyle shooting.

For all SSP, ESP, etc shooters will be reloading while they are still in the strong hand portion of the course.

Another better option is to separate strong hand and weak-hand portions of the stage into different strings.

Since this is a Limtied Vickers scored stage with no required concelment I can only assume this is intened to be a "skills" test and not simulating some possible scienario. The skills that seem to be under test is strong-weak had transitions and strong-weak hand shooting.

  11. So rule 6.21 states that "6.21 No "weak-hand only' reloading shall be permitted. Exception: See Permanently Physically Disabled Shooters' section".

Does that mean a stage that has a combination of strong hand/weak hand/Freestyle shooting in a single string where the reload happens during the weak handed shooting, the shooter can be forced to switch the firearm back to the strong hand for the reload, and then back to the weak hand to finish the stage? See the attached stage

Yes. Shooter either switches hands to reload OR perform a Loaded Chamber Reload (a.k.a. Tac Reload or Reload w/ Retention) before the strong-to-weak hand reload.

  12. Have to check Huntsville out. I spent a deployment with the Red Cross for hurricane Ivan in Alabama, some beautiful country. I was a disaster assessment officer for that one, got to drive around 1800 miles in AL in: Washington, Clarke, Marengo, Choctaw, Sumter, Clarke, and Monroe counties. We were based out of Montgomery. Is it pretty different that far north?

In short yes. The terrain is different. Proximity to larger cities is better (more of them). Huntsville is becoming a major tech center with about a dozen colleges and universities with a presence. While I don't feel the winters are harsh, you do get a sense of four different seasons. I grew up in NW FL and had a couple military tours in NW FL / SE AL and there winter occurred between Monday and Thursday of the 2nd week in Jan. You knew that because it wasn't too hot to wear long pants.

  13. I'd not bother with the stuff on the left. If you want to precaculate the min vel for a bullet weight add a col then fill it is as you test bullets. I'd suggest you also track min / max, average, and standard deviation - assuming your testing more than a single round at a specific loading - then calculate the resultant PF acheived.

  14. Any suggestions? Seems like 3 gun has a high monetary cost which is a bar to entry for many.

As mentioned by others you can spend a ton-o-money but can start with borrowed gear. Bring factory ammo and I'm sure you can find loaner gear. But here are some specific suggestions that can get you started, at least shooting on a local level:

Rifle: if you don't have something suitable already you can get a entry level M4 clone for ~$600 and with an inexpensive red dot and some mags and ammo you good for under $700.

Pistol: High cap is better than single stack and takes less mag pouches. Glocks and M&P's are popular but anyting will work.

SG: Many people take an existing field gun and throw on an extension to get started. If you don't have one the sky is the limit but if you do need to buy one its hard to beat a used Rem 870. If you find you don't like the 3-gun game or if you do and move up to a semi-auto SG the 870 will hold its value pretty well and you can get close to what you put into it at a later date.

These options are how I started. About the only thing left of my orgianl AR is the upper and lower receiver and even then its now my back up rifle. I now run a tricked out Versa Max SG but keep the 870 as a back up gun. I stated with a Glock but have switched over to an M&P - just liked it better.

  15. Alabama is pretty gun friendly, suppressors, MGs, SBRs (just recently), Concealed carry w/license, Castle Doctrine. The middle part of the state has several ranges and matches.

I'll throw in a votre for Alabama, specificall the Huntsville area. In addition to the gun freiendly laws of AL, Huntsville area has pots of shooting games (USPSA, IDPA, Speed Steel, Cowboy, various rifle games, and more, much more) and is a short drive to MANY, MANY others. Plus, it is a very tech friendly area with lots of tech jobs and more every year. For cities of its size, Huntsvuille is often in the top 10 of just about any poll.

Winter weather can be on the cool side, but not many days below freezing and very, very little snow (less than an inch once every 3-4 years).

IF you really looking for a move, you should at least look at the area.

  16. 150k rnds with stoppages every 100 rnds? That would be 1500 issues. Seems something massive would be wrong and a phone call to Hornady would be necessary. I would not have kept it.

I do have an LNL Ezject. Sure it has a learning curve and does require maintenance and cleaning once in a while. Spilled powder can cause primer feed problems and that is 90% of all issues but I don't think its excessive.

  17. As of late a lot of folks have had real good luck with Federal American Eagle 223 AR. It can be found for around $350 a case and depending on the lot it can be 1 M.O.A. ammo or better. Matter of fact that is what I am using for the Nordic Rifle Championships! Out of both my iron sight rifles it will hold 1M.O.A and easily hits a 10" plate at 400 yards if I do my part.

Just looked at the Fed ammo web site. This ammo is not listed as with an AR designation. For American Eagle they show a 50gr JHP, and 55gr or 62gr FMJ loads. I can't tell from the pic, what is the bullet used in this ammo?

    Thanks,
