  1. I shoot 3-gun, USPSA, IDPA, and some steel. I have favored guns for each game / Division but for 3-gun a bone stock M&P Pro 9mm with a self done Burwell trigger job is the ticket. Add some mag extensions and you're good to go. While all the mods like FSS, alum triggers, mag wells, etc. do add to the performance, but for 3-gun I think you're better off spending that money on better rifle optics, or rifle trigger, or 40 rnd rifle mags, or more SG caddies, or SG loading port mods, etc.

In 3-gun time gained by one or two faster pistol reloads with a mag well in a match or faster pistol splits with a lighter trigger is NOTHING to the time gained with good rifle optics & trigger when shooting past 200 yards or avoiding a rifle reload on a 30+ round rifle stage.

If the pistol is a multi use like USPSA Lim or IDPA ESP, add on the goodies but if just for 3-gun use the money else where. Unless you have lots of $$$ then add want ever you want.

    YMMV

Edit to add: One necessary reliability mod is the Apex extractor- that is a must have no matter what.

  2. 1274 suggestions...to me that would indicate that the rules in their current form are just not that big of a problem to the vast majority of IDPA shooters. Those of us wanting a little tweaking to the rule book are clearly in the minority. It'll be interesting to see what comes of it...

Sir, you either an IDPA shill or you have mastered the art of subtle sarcasm. I chose the latter. Bravo.

I wonder how many others took the cynical route that I followed and said “someone else made the comment I’d have made so I won’t bother, they’ll ignore it anyway”. Now if there were a VOTE on a rule change, I’d say early and often!

  3. Im really surprised that there isnt a thread going for this match, for questions like this one.

3GN doesn't get much love on this forum. So they stay away.

Sad but true. http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=187234 85% ot respondants say either its not wanted, someone else should be doing it,or I don't care what you do. I wouldn't hang out here much either.

Well I think you are over-dramaticizing that.... Just because people want 3 gun to stay outlaw doesn't mean that "they aren't wanted"...

Sure 85% of people (and I am solidly one of them) think that 3 gun doesn't need a ruling body. I have no problem with 3GN as long as they don't think they can take over 3 gun and push their way on people. Having to run matches on straight time so that you can waste a stage on a 10 second classifier is lame in my opinion. I am really looking forward to seeing what they do at the match this weekend though.

With respect, I think you just proved my point. Maybe "Just because people want 3 gun to stay outlaw doesn't mean that "they aren't wanted"..." is true for 3GN running / sponsoring a match but stating "people want 3 gun to stay outlaw" does in fact mean the 3GN effort of national rules and classification is in fact "not wanted".

Besides, I only said "not wanted" was one of three attitudes express, the others were "should be someone else" and "I don't give a darn what you do because I don't care".

Maybe my point wasn't clear. I was trying to express the thought that I doubt many folks would chose to participate (I know I would not) in a group where eight or nine folks out of ten express negative opinions of what they are doing. That, I think is why 3GN is not discussed on this forum much.

  4. Some thoughts...

    - Have the shooter hold the rope in their strong hand.

    - Use a clip and hook it to a belt loop ont he shooter and then as the shooter moves to cover the line is pulled

    - If you have a door prop hook the line to the door

    - If you need a reactive tgt then Jim's boweling pin idea is about as good as it gets for an indoor range

  5. Is the Lee factory crimp die any better than the Dillon crimp die I got with the set I purchased?

    ...

I don't have a dillon die to compare but compared to other sizing and crip dies the FCD opening is flared very little and has a carbide ring right at the opening. It reaches much closer to the base than any sizing die (which are normally flared to allow for expanded brass.

  6. Short version of my long 40 S&W story, I don't case gage every round (just a few random to make sure no gross changes to dies, but I do use a Lee FCD) but for major matches every round goes through a bulge buster - just to make sure.

  7. After shooting IDPA for several years and being an MD for about 3 years I think to many IDPA "leaders" lose sight of the fact its a GAME, just a GAME. The more you write rules to restrict shooters flexibility to find different / faster ways to play the GAME the more they will leave the sport. The more subjective SO calls become the more shooters will leave.

IMHO the last rules revision hurt the sport. Many of the suggestions I saw will help improve the game, others not so much.

  8. General rule of thumb woiuld be a fster powder at a lighter charge - less powder mass being converted to gas and jetting out the barrel.

Real chang will be switching to a heavyer bullet then you need less energy to get same PF.

160 gr XTreme are AMAZING! :-)

  9. I use them. Very fast for very close targets. Even with a 1-?x w/ throw lever (I use a 1-6x) they can be faster if you have a mix of close and far targets. Also gives an option if you have a vey low port to shoot through while prone.

They do add weight and would be slow for precise, small target shots.

  10. We moved and reloaded behind cover safely for nearly 20 years. Safety is not what motivated the present requirement for a standing reload.

While I will not have time to put on a kneepad in the "real world" (Sorry, kitty.) I will not likely get in 14 gunfights in the same day, either.

Kneepads are protective sports equipment just as our safety glasses and earmuffs are. I wear mine under long pants as the rules have long allowed, but why should I have an advantage over those with good enough legs for shorts?

    Well said.

  11. I own and have used in IDPA & USPSA a 9mm 1911 (custom build), 40S&W 1911 (Kimber with 'smith work), and 45ACP 1911 (Taurus, basically stock) at various times over the years. Not a lot by some standards but I've shot ~15k rounds trough a 1911 of some kind. All are fun but a 9mm 1911 was the biggest challenge. My 9mm 1911 had some early problems due to an out of spec barrel. Once that's was fixed the only issues have been mag related. If you are a 1911 kind of guy and can deal with the challenges of getting a 1911 to run (if needed) it might be worth it. There are other 9mm 1911 on the market at around the same or similar price point but I think you may have the same risks and challenges there. If you expect a stock bargain 9mm 1911 to run out of the box like a Glock, you could be disappointed and it might not be for you.

Brand bashing aside, 9mm 1911's are a challenge no matter what and I can't recommend a lower cost 1911 as your first 1911 unless you are up for a possible challenge.

  12. Lots of great looking guns here. I'm having a new Limited 2011 built and giving serious consideration to a painted grip. Would those of you with paint on the grips be willing to comment on durability or any other issues?

If you did it over again, would you use painted grips again?

  13. Rob, it would make much more sense to report these kind of issues to support@practiscore.com

We will be able to guide you trough how you could provide us with more information to allow us to reproduce and fix your issue.

I will, I just wanted to see if anyone had any quick insight, thought I might have set something wrong.

  14. Can't find any recent discussion on this and before I do a Mantis report I want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong.

I've been using Practiscore on Nexus 7 tables for IDPA scoring for several years and recently I got a deal on a refreb'd iPad Air and downloaded Practiscore - very different look, especially with the bigger screen. Sync'd a couple old matches and all worked well.

So this past Sat we ran a two squad match and I went to sync from the two Nexus 7's on to the iPad. First tablet went fine, second tablet went fine execpt it reported that new stages, penalties, divisions, classes, as well as shooters and scores were found - odd I thought. I go to look as the scores and only half of them were there. Tried resyncing each tablet and still no joy, got the same new stages, etc. message every time. Then I noticed that every sync attempt from the iPad created a NEW match on the iPad - I had FOUR matches with the same name.

Is there something I did or didn't do on the iPad to cause this? The nexus 7's are running 1.2.18 and the iPad had the latest version on iTunes 1.6.5 as I recall.

For the match results i just sync'd the two Nexus 7 tablets back and forth so I had a redundant copy.

  15. As pointed out, training is the key. There is no gun you can go buy that will allow you to go out and shoot at the MA level. However I do believe the ergonomics of the gun can make a difference in how much training is needed to get to a specific level of performance. Shoot what feels good to you and you shoot more and get more out of it faster.

Please note, a 2011 will feel more like a plastic gun than a steel gun. It’s much lighter than most 1911’s and the plastic grip will flex more like a Glock / XD / M&P. However it will have a trigger like a 1911 plus have a larger natural mag well. You can get a steel grip for you 2011 (~$500-$600) that will add ~9 oz to the gun but it will make it very close the IDPA weight limit. You may need to go to a mil-spec guide rod (or even a plastic one) to save some weight and even then an AL mag well may be too heavy unless you mill it down some.

For ESP a 9mm 1911 is a very good choice and you can get an STI Trojan for ½ the cost of 2011 and top of the line mags will also be ½ the cost. In my opinion that is a better choice for ESP.

  16. I have 10 Tripp 10 round 9mm 1911 mags.

I can get them to work well but only for a match or two then I have to work on them again. Most of the time it is getting the feed lips back to the correct dimension but I have followers pop out the top and other issues.

Anybody else have this kind of trouble?

Not exactly the same issue but on some well used mags I started having feed issues after an energetic slide lock reload that did not happen at a more sedate energy level. It seems the feedlips spread enough that when slamed in the brass would wedge itself just enfough to hang up the slide. I used a wire brush to clean the edges and a vice to a bring the feed lips back in. Haven't tested them yet but when new theses mags were flawless in this gun so... I'm hopeful at this point.

  17. The first thing you might want to do is shoot some of the options available. Personally the edge feels like swinging a turd on the end of a stick. There are several options other than the default sti response. Tanfoglio, CZ, Para/Springfield, SV, and the polymer framed guns XDm and M&P.

    Rich

I agree. I have a M&P Pro 40 with the Apex FSS. Its about as close to a 1911/2011 trigger you can get in with an M&P (can't speak to XD options) at 1/4 - 1/3 of the cost of a 2011. I used to have a G35 and the stock G35 trigger was not bad but far from great.

All that said, I just ordered a custom 2011 Limited gun from my local 'smith because 1) I could, and 2) I now shoot a 1911 in IDPA and have been shooting USPSA SSTK but its getting lonely in SSTK and I just like the 2011/1911 platform.
