  1. I agree with your Father.

For a great gripping surface, VZ Grips with some skateboard tape or checkering on the front strap. Or get plain, smooth grips and scateboard tape them as well as the front strap. Check out TruGrip.

For an inside the waistband carry. Go mild or suffer...wink.gif

For some nice wood grips, I like Grips by Esmeralda. But there really are a bajillion to choose from so just find what you like. Something that will give you adequate traction but won't eat all the skin off you while carrying in the holster.

Yeah, I don't think I'd want a gun with the Grim Reaper on the grips as a prosecution exhibit!

    The man has a point.

  2. Thanks everyone! Keep it coming. I'm hoping this poll (and the other one about belts) will help out anyone who has questions about the belts or holsters.

Helping me. Really just confirming/reinforcing what I was already thinking.

Corey, for single stack, there really isn't too many options to begin with. The rules limit what you can use for the most part, right? Let's see...DOH with the DOH part removed, making it a Stingray, or a Stingray, or a Flap Holster, or a Bianchi Cup style (which has a strap that snaps the pistol in place.). Am I missing any?

    Comp-Tac.

Pretty much at the top of my shooting-gear-to-buy-ASAP list is the Comp-Tac Belt Holster for Singlestack and the Blade-Tech DOH for Production (because Comp-Tac doesn't make one). I don't shoot much L10, and when I do, it's with my SS or Production gear. I don't really shoot Limited, just got classified in that division in case I decide to go to the Texas State Limited, in which case I'd probably shoot my Production rig (but get to fill up the magazines and get scored Major for a change).

  3. Started in D Class last year, and I'm still D Class.

I've been shooting for 35 years (long guns, almost 20 years with handguns) and thought I was pretty good. :roflol:

ALL of my shooting prior to this was slow-fire for accuracy. I'm not too bad at that. But when the timer's running, nothing goes right. <_<

D only because there wasn't an F class. :roflol:

  4. Good video!

It sums up some things I've been told, some of which I had already forgotten while working on other things. And introduced me to a couple new concepts.

The "shoot major" tip doesn't apply in Production. Seems the cost factor has many new shooters starting in Production where major offers no advantage.

When I shoot Production, I get the worst of both worlds by using major power factor ammo. It really sucks. (My Production gun is a .40S&W and I don't have any .40 minor.)

  5. I shot this again today with West Texas Practical Shooters

Shooting Production, still using Major power factor factory ammo but being scored Minor.

    13 A

    10 C

    1 D

1 Procedural (I drew and put two rounds in T6 on the first string. I missed T6 on the second string so I'd have the correct number of rounds on target. ;) )

    86 points divided by 39.21 (19.80+19.41) seconds for a 2.1933 Hit Factor.

    Classifiercalc.com shows 28.5585%

    CmCalc.com shows 28.556766%

Since I screwed this one up slightly less than the last time I shot it, the previous run of 24.5729% will be the duplicate.

  6. Go to the 1911style pistols forum and type in Spartan in the search window at the top right corner of your screen.... Lots of really good threads on the Spartan 9mm.

Yep. Brings up about 15 pages worth of thread listings. I've spent the past couple weeks going through them. Lots of good info.

EDIT: Only about 5 pages if you confine the search to the 1911-style Pistols forum as Merlin suggested. I searched the entire brianenos.com forum for anything with the word Spartan. That's where I got 15 pages. Everything from Land Rovers to references to the movie 300. But there is some stuff in the dealers forums, the gallery, some competition threads and such that you won't find if you only search the 1911 forum. (On the other hand, ton's of the same info is repeated over and over, so I'm not sure you'd miss anything important by only searching the 1911 pistol forum.)

  7. When I first got my Kimber Ultra CDP II, before I ever fired it, I had a local "gunsmith" install a short trigger for me. The gun would occasionally double. Don't know why, but it's been suggested that the trigger might not have been fit properly. He just dropped it in in place of the factory trigger.

I took the short trigger out and put the original trigger back in and the problem went away.

I still want the short trigger, but I want someone who knows what he's doing to set it up properly.

  8. My first handgun was a Smith & Wesson Performance Center "Shorty Forty" .40S&W.

Shorty40.jpg <- Not mine, just a pic of the same model I found on the net.

It was the predecessor to the "Tactical .40." It was designed for concealed carry and was a nice gun. I never got comfortable with the double-stack grip though. It always seemed, to me, like it was printing when I carried it. And it didn't fit my smaller than average hands too well.

I decided I wanted a single-stack, and that made me take another look at 1911s. Figured that if I'm going to have fewer shots, I might as well punch a bigger hole, so I went with .45 ACP. I also became convinced that Jeff Cooper was right when he said the DA/SA was a solution to a nonexistent problem. But I wanted something small and light, thinking that the small, lightweight pistol on my belt was better than a big, heavy pistol at home on the night stand.

I bought the Kimber Ultra CDP II. It has a 3" barrel and aluminum frame. Comes with tritium night sights, front strap checkering, carry melt, ambi safety, etc. 25 ounces with an empty mag (but it's not much good with an empty mag  feels a lot heavier loaded). I added Crimson Trace Lasergrips. (I bought mine before Kimber made Lasergrips available on the Ultra CDP.)

    DSCF1623a.jpg

I carry it in a Tucker "The Answer" IWB holster

    DSCF1637a.jpg

or a Kirkpatrick Leather "Compact Under Cover" depending on how I'm dressed.

    DSCF1634a.jpg

im looking at the Kimber Ultra CDP II 9mm. Does this run well? Is the small light frame harsh, even with 9mm?

Or would the Kimber Compct CDP II in 45 with about 1" more barrel be a lot better

I considered the Compact CDP II with the 4" barrel. When I'm shooting it, I wish I had the longer barrel. When I'm carrying it, I'm glad I got the smaller version. YMMV.

I've shot it in USPSA Singlestack division (without the laser). (And once in L10 just for grins.) I'm still struggling with recoil control for quick follow-up shots. (I'm slow, slow, slow.) This gun is definitely not ideal in that regard. But I shoot it about as accurately as as anyone else I've seen compete with their full-sized competition guns, lol. (I don't mean to say that some of them couldn't be as accurate as me if they were going as slow as I am. Just saying I hit what I aim at within the distances we deal with.) I use 8-round mags for competition. I broke the ejector being a little too enthusiastic with a slide-lock reload, lol, but it still ejects just fine. For carry, I use the flush-fitting 7-rounders.

  9. Dawson makes a replacement sight that is specific to the spartan cut. I have one coming in for mine but have the FO out of the factory one till it comes in

Do you know what the specs for the standard FO Spartan front FO sight? What is the recommended replacement size? I want to go to a all black front on Spartan 9mm, staying consistent with my other game guns.

I think that someone said the front sight on the Spartan is .125 wide. I've been going through the 15 or so pages that come up when I searched "Spartan" and I've taken in more information than I can remember all at once, lol.

Lots of people seem to swap them out for a Dawson .100 front.

(And, as mentioned above, Dawson has one specifically to fit the Spartan.)

EDIT: Actually, if you want all black - no fiber optic - the only one I see on Dawson's site is .185 tall x .125 wide. I think that's the same HxW as the FO that comes on the Spartan. If you want/need a different size, you might give them a call.

Go to dawsonprecision.com and type "Spartan" in the search field. That brings up a handfull of sights.

  10. I was wondering if there was a USPSA member that had a GM classification in all 6 Divisions so I started scrubbing through the Top 20 list on the USPSA website. There were about 5 shooters that had GM classifications in 5 of the six divisions but usually a U or really low percentage in the final division. Much to my surprise there was only one member, Johnny Brister, who has a GM classification in every division except for Single Stack which he has an M classification with a percentage of 89.8%. Looking at his latest classifier results he has been shooting Single Stack in 09 and looks like he is on pace to make GM in that division as well. It would be a monumental achievement if he were to make GM in all 6 Divisions!!!

In the July USPSA Classifier Recalculation Johnny is up to 93.4% in Single Stack....... I bet he is going to bump into Single Stack GM next month at the pace he is going..... GM in all six Divisions, that is absolutly SICK!!!!

Have you seen the July/Aug 2010 Front Sight?

Johnny Brister made GM in Singlestack and is the first to make GM in all six divisions.

  11. I've been thinking along the same lines, a Dawsonized Spartan, probably 9mm for cheaper ammo, with Dawson's enhancement package (and I have the same questions about it as the OP), magwell, short trigger, and thin grips, and probably a thinner front FO sight.

I'm back and forth between the ideas of having the Ice magwell and the STI trigger, for a more "race gun" look, or getting a solid trigger and a S&A magwell for a more "traditional" look. Grip tape on the front strap, for now, probably, but checkering and a refinish on down the road somewhere.

  12. There's a much simpler answer which doesn't require program changes or complex math skills...

According to 6.2 and Appendix 2 in the rulebook.... a division with less than 5 competitors shouldn't be recognized.

Shooter should be moved (by the rangemaster, 6.2.5) to another division where his/her equipment is valid.

    APPENDIX A2

Level I and Level II A minimum of 5 competitors per division (recommended) ["Recomended," not "required"]

At most of the local matches I've been to, the division with 5+ competitors is the exception rather than the rule. We'll see 18 shooters total, shooting in 4, 5, or even 6 different divisions. Twice I've been the only Singlestack shooter, and once I was one of two in SS. I don't want to get bumped to L10 or Lim just because there aren't enough in SS if I'm trying to accumulate classifier scores in SS. And I have yet to see a match with two revolver shooters.

But I guess that's why we mostly look at the over all results, even if they are "unofficial." Our divisions, at small matches, seem to just be where one wants to shoot a classifier.

  13. Digging through old stuff just 'cause I'm bored.

Someone said, "It doesn't matter." That's probably THE Best Answer. It has no affect on who wins anything. Whether the shooter gets all the points or no points, he still wins his division . . . unless he zeroed all the stages, in which case we're back to square one.

The shooter with the highest hit factor is entitled to all the points. Even if that hit factor is zero, IMO, he should get the points.

If there are 10 competitors in a division and they all zero that stage, then they all tied for first on that stage and the all get all the points, or should.

I don't have, and haven't used, EZwinscore. I understand, from this discussion, that in this situation, the program gives the shooter zero points. I understand that is because it's dividing the shooters hit factor of zero by the high hit factor of zero.

And I see that people were taught do do it this way without the software as well.

    In this case, it's wrong.

    There is a rule.

The scoring program does not appear to follow that rule.

One, or the other needs to be changed.

I'd vote for fixing the scoring program in the next update.

    Correct! rules.gif

The rule is clear. If the program is incorrect, it needs to be changed.

(Or change the rule to match the software, for all I care, just make them consistent.)

  14. classifiercalc.com sometimes, less than 50% of the time from what I've seen so far, shows me a score that is 0.0001 higher than what it ends up being when posted by USPSA. Just a rounding difference, I suppose, and plenty accurate for me. (I know they ask you to report errors, but are the really interested when it's 0.0001 off? I haven't contacted them about that, thinking it would be just a bit too nit-picky.)

A--A score that is more than 15% above the member's current classification bracket.

I interpret that to mean that if you're a C shooter, then 74.9999% will count while 75.0000% will get flagged as A and not used.

I've also read (here on the BE forums) that if you call them, you can get them to count it. The A flag is more to protect you from a typo or an incorrectly set up classifier bumping you up into a class in which you can't compete. But if you want it, it's my understanding that they'll give it to you.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm a D shooter. My highest classifier previously was 43%. I shot one recently that I believe is going to come out at 60%. I'm expecting an A flag.

  15. Chris,

#5 was used by me in the Army. A fellow NCO passed away while we were in Korea. We threw away A LOT of stuff his wife did not need to see when his belongings made it back home! It should be some kind of man code!

  16. If you need a make up shot on the popper you can kiss this one good bye... I found out :angry2:

Well, Saturday, I put one in the black on T1 and didn't notice until it was scored. The Mike really killed me. :(

  17. What part of Texas?

Edit: Now that I have both eyes open, I see you're in Lubbock.

As Jordan mentioned, West Texas Practical Shooters has a USPSA match out West of Levelland tomorrow. (Monthly matches usually on the fourth Saturday of the month, but as mentioned, it will be Sunday, tomorrow, this time.)

A week from today, Lea County Action Shooters has a USPSA match in Hobbs, NM. (Monthly matches the first Saturday of the month.)

The San Angelo Gun Club has monthly USPSA matches on the fourth Sunday of the month.

Those are the closest ones I know of to Lubbock.
