  1. In case anyone is interested, because of the brass issue, my caliber choices are 6.5x47 or 6.5x55.

The problem with the 6.5x55 is that you need a long action. Remember it won't fit in a 308 action, it requires a 30-06 length action. That is why the 6.5x284 is so popular, it will fit in the 308 length action and has the powder capacity (well more) of the 6.5x55. And you did not tell us what action it's going in. If you have a long action you have allot more choices like the 6.5x06 and some wildcats off the win mag cartridges.

  2. I'm building a new gun and I am having the same problem deciding what caliber. 6.5x47= great brass and factory ammo that is good. so just buy some and shoot. or. 260 Remington= not great brass almost no factory ammo and a little long to "chase the lands" as you shoot the gun. or. 6.5 Creedmor= more case capacity than 6.5x47, not great brass but factory ammo, so just buy some and shoot. If I do go with the 260 I will make it an AI because if I'm going to do all the case prep I better get all the performance I can out of it.

  3. It is a great drive. But man is it slow. When we go from SLC to Denver it is faster to take I-80. Its ugly across Wyoming but fast. I always ask the passengers if they want the pretty drive or the fast drive. I'll bet driving a tractor up that hill is slow. Are you just driving a truck or are pulling a trailer also?

  4. Having just shot a 400 bird sporting clays match I can tell for a 100% certainty that not all bird fly the same. When the wind blows you still have to shoot them even though the clays are in a different place and at a different speed. We shot one club that I swear made me really nervous. The wind was blowing so hard sometimes that you would break the 180 to shoot the birds. I say just remember birds do not fly the same and have fun shooting them!! I say it is a skill of shooting flying clays not of having all targets presented the same.

  5. I really enjoy shooting them, and nothing beats the thrill of multiple flipper clays in the air at the same time. However, flying clays are too difficult to score fairly. If the RO makes a bad call on whether a clay was broken/chipped/dusted, the competitor has no recourse, and the penalty/lost points are significant under both IMGA and IPSC rules. Its not just the RO calls either - even "real" clay traps can cause problems such as prematurely thrown birds (happened to me at RM3G07) or broken birds (which should require the entire stage to be reshot, but mostly ROs give the shooter the hit anyway). I think they are great for local "fun" shoots, but flying clay bird targets should be avoided entirely at big matches.

I have to disagree with the difficulty to score. About a bazilloin clays are thrown every year at the Grand and only very few people have something to say about the scoring or the hit not being seen. We are for the most part standing closer tho the clays when trown off a flipper, so it should be easyier for us to see the hits than from behind a 27yd line.

  6. I finally shot my first 25 in skeet. This is after MANY 24's and a boatload of 22-23's. What I'm really happy about is that I did it in competition, with everyone watching and keeping score. I always have a bad habit of dropping one on station 5 or 6. I have made it to station 7 a few times but get over confident and drop an easy one. (I hate that!) Skeet sure has helped my sporting clays game and thats why I started. The funny thing is I have this horrible trigger jerk with my pistol and after shooting the shotgun consistently it has really helped my trigger control with the pistol. The pistol shooting feels much smoother and faster. Maybe it's trigger control and maybe it's being under the pressure of competition more often that has helped my pistol shooting.

  7. Assuming we're talking about the Clays sports, I sorta use the beads. Sorta meaning that I use the beads as a quick check that my mount is right, then I ignore them.

Since you don't aim a shotgun, you point it, you can pretty much knock the things off and still bust the frisbees.

Except for some of the long shots like other have said before. FITASC is know for the long hard crossers. If you are going to that match you better be prepared.

  8. If you can find Promo use that. It uses the same data as Red Dot and is much less expensive. Red Dot/Promo is a low charge weight powder so you will use only about 18-20 gr for a standard 3 dram(1200 fps) 1 1/8 oz load. Some say it is dirty but I find it to be clean, WAY CLEANER than those promo wal mart shells from Federal or Winchester. It seems to shoot softer for me than any of the Hogdon powders like Tightwad and Tightgroup.

  9. I like the whole she-bang around F1, the skulduggery, the politics the cheating and mostly people like Schumi and his must win at all cost attitude. Hell maybe that is why I enjoy IPSC/USPSA too. I think it mist really suck for you guys as all the races but the one in Canada means that you get up very early.

Come on Sunday, I can not wait.

I live in Utah and the race this weekend starts at 9pm. Japan starts at about midnight and Brazil starts at 12 noon (were on the same time zone as Brazil. The rest of them I record then I can skip the commercials.

But I'm with you, The skulduggery, the politics, cheating and the drivers and teams are what make it fun. I really like the technical innovation. How the hell do you make 700-800 hp out of a 3.0 liter engine on 92 octane "pump" gasoline? I also love the drivers skill, Arton Senna used to get scuff mark on the side of his tires from bumping the guard rail in the entrance to the tunnel in Monte Carlo. It is awesome to watch.

  10. It been hell without F1 these past few months. But the excitement is about to start. I can't wait to see if Lewis is the wonder boy that Peter Windsor thinks he is :) I hope he is not!!! I also wonder how Honda will improve this year with Ross Braun. My hopes for the season are that BMW will beat Mclaren and Ferrari will win the drivers and manufactures championship.

  11. We use pdf all the time in our printing business, and have gone to pdf seminars by Adobe. The proper way to make a pdf file acording to Adobe is to install a postscript printer that prints to "file". Then "print" the document using that printer. You then Distille the postscript file using acrobat distiller. And this makes a pdf without any other influences from the operating system or any Microsoft parts trying to make the pdf.

  12. For me this is just mathematics: Either load 8 one by one in 6s, push 8 round into tube with long speed-loader using 4s or reload 19 rounds in 4s if using mags.

If competition favours short 6-10 shot stages I will consider taking tube gun since it points better and shooting is faster. BUT if 10-?? shots are needed almost at every stage I would fool myself if I were thinking going faster with regular shotgun than with Saiga.

Anyway, choice is free. I do have and I do use "tubes" too. There are pros and contras with Saiga as is said. This is just my 2c.

  14. As a bulk mailer we get industry newsletters and a couple of the REALLY BIG mail houses always check, standard, first class and priority mail delivery times. Every year when they test mail priority mail it averages about 4-5 days with some pieces (about 5%) taking 2 weeks. The official delivery time from the post office is NONE! Only that Priority mail take Priority on a truck, airplane or other equipment over first class mail. In other words, It gets loaded on the truck first. Unless, and this is the slow down, there are first class pieces or standard mail pieces that have been in the DC for more than three days, then those get "priority" over the Priority and first class that just came in. So depending on how busy each DC is there can be some real slow downs. And all of this happens at each DC it goes to. It is way worse if the package is not automated and has to be sorted by hand. I have had trays of standard mail go from Utah to the east coast faster than you can believe because it is automated and will run on the automated postal sorters faster than the non automated pieces.

If it has to be there in a certain time then only with a guaranteed service does it have a chance, Think Fedex or UPS. But then I have stories about those also. Did you know that every December FedEx and UPS only guarantee their next day air service. The ground delivery's, Second day air and three day are not guaranteed. Then UPS and FedEx suspend ALL deliver guarantees about a week before Christmas.

  15. Eric, You what, most... well really all.. of the "holes" in the pattern of my shotgun shell is because the pattern needed to be 2 feet farther forward :)

I have been shooting skeet lately and reloading the Rem STS and Gun club hulls with 3/4 oz of 9 shot. They work just as well as the 1 1/8 oz shells, with a lot less recoil.

    Scott

I know you wouldn't cheat, but just to let you know #10 shot will not reliably break skeet targets...

I don't know about #10 shot but #9 does a dandy job on skeet and about 50% of the sporting clays shots. The really nice thing is that even after 100 rds you have no flinch.
