  1. It looks like Mike just put up the date for the Ironman on his web site. June 8th - 13th 2004. If you really wanted to do alot of shooting in june then you could shoot the Ironman on the 2nd weekend and the USPSA Nationals on the 4th weekend.

I like the Ironman, Lots of rounds, great stages with brain power involved, hard shots and lots of dredded steel in all sorts of configurations. I am there! :)

  2. After some reserch the 260 rem is really the 6.5mm-08. What I really want is a 6.5mm-08 ackley improved 40. this is also know as the 260 remington 40 degree. this would give increased case capacity and help with throat erotion. the cases are easy to make you just use a factory 260 case and fire form it.

  3. I am looking at the Sierra reloading manual and can not find a .260 cal anything. When you say a 260 do you really mean a 6.5mm (.264) or do you mean a .243 (6mm)

Also I am building a rifle for mor. I found my local gun shop selling new remington 700 ADL in 243 for $371. So I got one. Now I am going to get the AICS with the 10 rd mags. they are made for the 308 cal cases, this means .308, .243 or 7mm-08 if you want to use the magazine. IMHO the 6.5 bullet has the best ballistics on paper. If I wanted to build the gun to shoot a 6.5mm bullet with a 308 case so they will fit in the AICS magazine what do I do. I can not find a 6.5mm cartridge base on the 308 case. I would welcome any comments or suggestions.

    Thanks

I have built a cart in the past. I have also seen and looked carefuly at many carts at major 3-Gun matchs and smaller matches, After looking I came up with a list of things I wanted in a cart and things I did not want.

1- It had to be able to carry enough "stuff" for at least one day at the MGM Ironman match.

2- Almost without exeption every match has had one of two things: Rain or Sun

Rain: About half of the cart I have seen addressed this problem by being able to cary the gun in it's case. this will protect it from the rain. Like most of the carts made from a wagon, The allow you to put the gun in its case and cart it around. All of the other carts leave the gun out for the rain to get to it. Most notably are the carts that are made out of a hand truck or the "Rugged Gear" cart.

Sun: When it is sunny it is dusty. I remember going to the Ironman one year and I had my guns in a Hand truck style cart. With the guns exposed and with the wind the guns got covered with dirt. That was a bad idea. On another occation I went to Elko NV in Aug for a match and it was hot and dusty, This time I keept my guns in the case and just draged everthing around. This tought me two thing, THATS A LOT OF WORK and It keept the guns clean. When I got home the guns looked like I had only done target pratice at an indoor range with them not a match in the middle of the Nevada desert.

The cart has to protect the guns when your not shooting.

3- When you go to a match you do not always shoot all three guns on every stage so I want to be able to put my pistol mags, Rifle mags, shot shell holders, ect ... in a case when I am not using them.

4- I want all my ammo in a case like I do when I shoot a pistol match. In a 3-gum match you have alot more ammo that you are changing in and out.

5- A small cooler would be great to put water or gatoraid in so it would stay cool at least part of the day in 95 degree heat.

6- Some way to carry , Extra choke tubes, oil, cleaning rod, Ect. All that extra stuff you want to have close at hand so that you do not have to walk all the way back to the truck when you are on the stage that is the farthest away from your truck.

7- No way am I going to put the muzzle of my $1500 JP rifle or any other gun into a "hole" to support the front of it. All you need is a small nick or ding on the crown of a gun and that barrel is done. When I saw the "Rugged Gear" cart doing that I thought "What a dumb idea I do not want that in my cart."

You can see more picts and how I built it at my web site Utah multi gun association

The whole thing only cost me about $90.00

  5. I have a Para P-16 Limited in 40 cal with JP Enterprises double ring sights. I have the rear sight adjusted all the way down but the gun still shoots 4" high at 25 feet. This is really becoming a problem because I like the bullet to hit where I aim.

Here is my question, Can a gunsmith lower the back sight. It has the Para dovetail cut in it. So if a gunsmith just milled it the "V" notch would be wrong. What is the best way to fix this gun?

    Thanks

  6. USPSA already has 3 divisions (well really 5 but the other 2 are really small) why not just add the scoped rifles to the limited class and add Production as the other class with iron sights. Since the primary classes are Open, Limited and Production in almost all of the pistol matches, Just make the 3-gun classed match. That way is is easy for people to understand and join 3-gunning from just being pistol shooters.

And the answer is YES to the question you are all thinking. Production should be limited to 10rds in pistol and rifle. And just for fun limit the shotguns to 4rds in the magazine....Maybe? It would sure give everyone who has a "stock" gun someplace to shoot without feeling overwhelmed in the equipment race.

  7. Before starting in this sport I was involved in auto racing. In the racing world we had a couple of thing we would do 1- Read the rule book! 2- Read the rule book! 3- Memorize the rulebook. 4- Understand what the rulebook says NOT what everyone one including the officials “Think” what the rulebook says. 5- Find every exception you can and use it to your advantage, because if it doesn’t say that you cannot do it, then you can.

I really enjoyed reading this post and after reading the USPSA rule book here is my two cents worth.

1- There is no “180 degree” rule in the USPSA book. Read 10.3.4 it says 90 degrees from the median of the backstop. It does not say only one backstop is allowed. The real rule says “point the gun in an unsafe direction. Or safe angles of fire. 2.1.2

2- Multiple gun transition. The rules do not say that you cannot do it. But there are some parts of the rulebook you need to be aware of. 10.3.5.2 you must hold onto your gun until you set it down and then you cannot move more than an arms length away from it. But, you can reholster your gun 5.3.3 just remember that it cannot be required to do so in the course description. 2.1.4 & 2.2.6.1& 8.5.2

3- The only kink in this whole rulebook thing is 7.1.2 They make the CRO God. So they can make up their own rules and claim that it’s a “safety thing”.

4- Unfortunately almost everyone has forgotten rules 1.1.5 & 1.1.6 this is supposed to be a dynamic, challenging sport with courses of fire that represent that. I love 1.1.6 “No shooting challenge or time limit may be protested as being prohibitive.” :)

  8. At the first of this post I said I was on a reliability test. here is how it is going. I cleaned the gun last septemer 2002, since then I have shot about 1500 rds and 8 matches without cleaning the gun. At the last match I had a ftf, the bolt would stick back and not lift a shell up to be fed into the chamer. I supose it is time to clean and oil the gun. The gun lately will shoot ALL loads that I put in it including the light trap loads. In conclution I have found the gun runs clean (gas system) and after the initial break in it will shoot everthing I feed it. It will run even when it gets quite dirty (dirt in action). I am very happy with the gun and can not see any reason to switch guns in the near future.

Also it would be nice to here how everyone else who has a browning gold is doing with their guns. Please post a reply and let us know.

  9. You know I should have known A3 and A4 target sizes but I thought they were some new thing. I am a printer so I should know what A3 and A4 is.

Are the rules posted on the USPSA web site not the proposed rules? Becouse from what I got in reading Front Site they were the rules that just need to be approved.

  10. I would like to start a discusion of the proposed IPSC shotgun rules.

I'll just start with what I like in the rules and then.. what parts I think will make them NEVER fly with most 3-Gun happy people.

I like the new A3 and A4 shotgun targets, Mutch easier to score. I also like having definitions in the rules for thing like how to carry your gun from stage to stage, Start positions and ready conditions.

    Don't like:

24 rd max count on stage.

No shooting steel plates with slugs.

Weak sholder shooting only on clasifiers.

(Drum Roll please) (the really stupid one!) Max of 10 or 10% whichever is lower on fragible targets. This rule is just never going to work with Mike Gibsons poper thrower. Those things are just about as much fun as you can have with your shotgun at a match.

  11. My wife got some Freeon frames with the Laser Blue glasses in them and I think they are the best glasses for shooting. The are the only one that don't hit the gun when shooting the rifle. Now How the h**l do you keep them from foging up every time it gets cold. I will say that all my other shooting glasses (Revo, cheep stuff, and others) foged up worse than the RP's. At our 3-gun this week when ever you have to sprint from one place to the next carring the gun and trying to shoot they keep fogging up.

Does anyone have any ideas on products that work for keep the glasses from fogging? Living here in snow country whenever we ski or snowmobile we use vented gogles but you can stop and clear the glasses, It is harder when your shooting, with the timer running and try to make the hits to stop and clear your glasses.

  12. We will be doing a monthly club match and hope to have 20 - 30 shooters show up. Try to do 6 stages a match and keep it fun and challenging. It looks like there is not a scoring program for the Multi-Gun Association so if I get motivated I'll work on writing one and give it away to clubs to help promote 3-guning....If there is any interest?

    thank You

  13. A couple of us up here in Utah would like to put on some local 3-gun matches. I would look for any advice that you would be willing to give. Also, What do you use for scoring software? We will be using the MGA rules. Would you be willing to share things like score sheets, Scoring software. What do you think about multi-gun stages. and single gun stages? How long should a stage be?

    Thanks

  14. As I am reading the new Front Sight Jan/feb 2003 (Go to page 5) Dave says:

" Recogized matches are events that operate under USPSA safty rules, but don't necessarily abide by the equipment rules."

I am starting a club here in Utah to shoot 3-gun matches. To try and encourage some of the USPSA shooters to try out 3-gun I am going to try a match using USPSA safety rules and the MGA rules for everything else which will give me the ability to shoot a tactical optics class as a USPSA match. So we will have "Open", "Limited", and "Tactical Class-Scoped Rifle".

Tell what you think about this?

  15. I would just like to take a poll on what a great rifle stage should have and what distance would you like to see the targets at.

We have the chance to shoot up to about 400yds at our 3 gun matches but I hear a lot of people complaining that they are too far out there to have any fun. And that it is not very tactile sound.

    What do you think?

  16. I always figured, why shoot reduced recoil slug, when you have to make that 50yd or 100yd slug shot, the gun just shoots flatter. Mine are PMC Brenneke 2 3/4 1oz 1600 fps slugs and they work without problem. At the last 3-Gun we had we shot some buckshot and I used the PMC reduced recoil 00 buck 3 dram equiv. they also worked great. My gun is a Gold Turkey Stalker with a 24" barrel and the heavy load gas piston. all stock exept for a briley mag extension. Maybe you could get the gun back to as stock as posible and see if you can find the problem that way. As has been discused on this forum in other post, the gun is reliable and will shoot everything but the light trap loads when new thenafter some break-in it will even shoot those. If your gun never did work in the stock configuration then maybe the gas piston is faulty and briley missed it. If you are anywhere close to me I would be happly to let you use my gas port and barrel to help you narrow down the problem.

  17. rkgsmith,

What is your frustration with the browning gold? I have one with the briley extention and when I started shooting it, it would not shoot the light 1oz 2 3/4 dram loads. Now after about 500 rds it works great. I think the gun needs a little "breaking in" then they are the fastest, most reliable gun for 3-Gunning. Right now I am on a reliablility test to see how many rds I can shoot before a misfire or a ftf without cleaning the gun.

  18. If I look at the different sets of rules and hear people talk about how to get new shooters into 3-Gunning, I came up with a set of rules that might try to accommodate everyone. I dont know how successful it would be but it is just an idea to bounce around.

    1- Open-

The rules are "We have no rules". Just like open is now.

    2- Limited-

    Pistol,  same as USPSA.

Rifle- major and minor with iron or open sights of any kind and make, Comp OK on rifle.

Shotgun-  major and minor, 8rd magazine, no comp.

*With a limited 10 class also, Only 10 rd mags in rifle and pistol.

(The other idea is to separate the Limited from the Limited 10 and have the Limited class use use a 4 power or less scope on the rifle and the Limited 10 class to be only open/iron sights.)

    3- Production-

    Pistol same as USPSA.

Rifle-Only A-2 AR-15's,M-14, M1 and the current rules used in Highpower. add AK-47, G3, Mini-14, Ect ... Using only military calibers and only open sights that are OEM. Ten rd mags only. Or any bolt action with any sighting system No comps on any rifle.

Shotgun-  Only 24" or longer barrel, 4 rds in the magazine. (These production rules allow anyone with a bird gun, a production pistol and a common rifle to come and shoot, be competitive, have fun and not feel out of place. Just like production class is supposed to do.)

    4- Revolver class-

    Pistol- same as USPSA.

Rifle- any manually operated rifle with iron OEM sights.

Shotgun-  Any side by side or overunder.

(This will let the cowboy action guys come shoot with us and see how much fun it is using modern firearms.)

  19. Yes there is some wrangling left to do.

At the MM3 gun, the Rocky mountain and others the limited shotgun barrel length is 22". MAXIMUM!

Could someone please explain WHY? or think about changing the rule to allow a longer barrel. Why would there be a barrel lenght in the limited/tactical class. For example I am going to shoot the MM 3-gun, the MGM Ironman and the Rocky Mountain match with a Para-ord 1911, a AR-15 with iron sights and a Browning shotgun. Guess what, I have to shoot in open becouse I have a stock Browning shotgun with a 24" barrel made for shooting ducks. This makes me not as excited to come shoot.

If I am being a whinner please let me know... I can take it.
