Looks for Range (1/11)

  1. For those of you that reload rifle calibers on your Dillon press: How accurate do you find the powder measure? I am setting up my 550 to load 308 and am wondering if I should use the dillon powder measure or use a scale. Do you weigh each load? I find for my pistol calibers it is dead on for each load and only spot check occasional powder drop weights. I am going to start with IMR 4895 for my first powder.
  2. For now just plinking. I had been using portugese milsurp but that has just about dried up. Now,(if I have to buy new) it will be cheaper to reload. 308 is also even hard to find in plinking ammo - can not find PMC, white box or federal red box. I do have access to some free 308 brass. I am just looking in to loading 308. It looks like a lot more work (than 9mm) with repeated tumbling, resizing, cleaning the primer pocket/flash hole, etc. I am leaning to a single stage because i hate switching things around on my 550. It may be easier to just have a second press for 308.
  3. I have been reloading 9mm for years on my dillon 550. I am considering reloading 308. My question is: should I buy a tool head, dies and powder dispenser for my 550 or just buy a single stage press? Any thoughts? I am guessing I would load 1,000 rounds of 308 per year. Thanks Kurt
  4. I never bought the DVD. just watched this guys series of videos. Very easy to set up! My only advice is make sure whatever you mount the press to MUST be rock solid and preferably bolted to the wall and or floor. ANY movement of the press can create issues. Good luck
  5. Another option, if she liked the 1911 platform, is a 1911 in 9mm. My Springfield is like shooting a 22 - very little recoil.
  6. And what is the original mainspring weight on a 9mm springfield loaded?
  7. Thanks Wide45. You just saved me $70. Kurt
  8. I am getting into loading .308 (for a bolt rifle) on my Dillon 550. Are the carbide dillon dies worth the extra money over the steel ones? Anyone prefer other brands for .308? I use dillon dies for 9mm and have been happy with them. Thanks for the advice. Kurt
  9. I have been reloading 9mm a 550B for 2 years (over 12,000 rounds). I just started shooting some .308 rifle. I am considering starting to reload my .308 also. I have read a lot and watched videos on rifle reloading. My question is - would you buy a conversion kit for the dillon or just buy a single stage press. I typically shoot maybe 20-30 rounds of .308 per week. So It is not high volume. If you use your dillon for rifle reloading do you prime with it, etc? Or do you hand prime? What would be a good entry level trimming device? Any advice would be appreciated. Kurt
  10. I have been shooting a Glock 19 in matches for 2 years now. I shoot it better than my Glock 17. I have pinched my palm between the magwell and the mag a few times. One fix I found was use my glock 17 mags in the glock 19. I just got my first 1911 a springfield 9mm. I was using it for a 3 day defensive pistol class. By lunch time of the second day I was getting tired of all the FTF's, so I switched back to my trusty Glock 19. It was like putting on an old well broken in pair of shoes. It just felt good. So go ahead like everyone else said and shoot the 19. There are always several others shooting compact glocks at our matches.
  11. I have shot a glock 9mm for 2 years in IDPA, IPSC and and steel challenge it has served me well. I reload 9mm only. I wanted a 1911 but really did not want to start reloading another caliber. So I bought a Springfield 1911 in 9mm. "Apples and oranges" is a good comparison. The 1911 9mm is dead on accurate and fun to shoot. I have shot a few 1911 in 45 and do not feel they where anymore accurate.

Double check with multiple sources and work loads up slowly checking for signs of overpressure.
  13. Sarge - glad the die worked for you. I thought the increased effort using the EGW U 9mm die, even with case lube, was too much AND the powder funnel stuck on the upstroke causing powder to spill. Kurt
  14. Well I sent a money order for the item in the original post ($115 dollar holster). Got an PM from the seller (after letting him know the check was in the mail) saying that since I took a chance and trusted him by sending a MO, he would put the item in the mail to me before he received the MO. Two days later he got the MO, next day I got the item - all is well with the world!!!!
