  1. Well, we have short range bowling pin fun shoot with .22lr rifles coming up next weekend, Ì was feeling like i really could use some practice. Went to the range with a buddy, only to find out that the .22lr range had not been used for a while, there was LOT of snow. Had to dig our way so we could put up the pins. Here is a small video so you can see how much snow there was, I'm about 5 foot 7. It was getting dark already so I had hard time seeing the pins, and I apologize for not using glasses, as I only had some dark shooting glasses with me. That was one of the better runs for me during the trip, it was 13.36, best being 11.21, the worst, I dont even want to talk about them. I'm using my 3gun rifle with a CMMG .22lr conversion kit. Temperature was around -6C or 21F.
  2. I like the sharp recoil impulse. Sharp, quick cycling gets me the fastest split times. But there is definately need for adjustable gas block when lightening the moving parts - the rifle would be very hard to shoot without it and would probably also cause a lot of malfunctions. I should be able to finish my own lightened carrier next week and tune the adjustable gas system for it (tuned it for this weekends club match w/just empty buffer). The rifle is probably going to need more maintenance with lighter moving parts, but that's something I'm willing to do for much faster splits.
  3. Time for adjustable gas block, i'd say... I'm running empty rifle buffer and rifle length buffer spring w/20" barrel w/adjustable gas system. Those two things definitely helped my shooting a lot. a VERY noticeable difference in muzzle flip and the sights came back on target much faster. Some guys are running similar setups as mine, with a spacer in buffer tube (rifle length buffer tube), with carbine spring and empty carbine buffer. When it comes to repricocating (i really cannot spell that word) mass and splits times, less weight is better... But that calls for adjustable gas system.
  4. For competition use, AR over sig anyday. My experience is from friend's 552 commando though. But the characteristics of recoil are closer to AK than AR.
  5. Given your conditions - go with the STI I'd still say buy a complete lower receiver and upper from brownells - that's about 750 dollars with brownells' "everyone's a dealer" - discount. Gives you a budget to "tune" the rifle for the sport. I would personally add a Jard or JP trigger, a bennie cooley comp (haven't tried the sjc titan, but heard lots about it) and perhaps a adjustable gas system. Those would run you about 250 dollars more, and the rifle would probably be even better than off the shelf STI. Especially the adjustable gas system helps a lot. I made a WECSOG version on my mine, wich cost me 14cnt. You can't go wrong with JP - stuff. I think the JP trigger comes with instruction DVD to make it easy for everyone. To me it was so obvious i never even looked at the instructions. If you are thinking Tactical division, I would also add a National Match front sight, even on a 20" barrel. I have one on mine and just love it! Sorry about giving an not so straight forward answer, but this kind of gun would just give you a lot more bang for the buck, and be much more easier to shoot than a standard ar-15. This just me, because I'm a student I'm always seeking for the "most-bang-for-the-buck" - solution.
  6. This is the only pic i could find:
  7. Yeah, I know him from the internet too, but I want to do it myself. Having access to a machine shop in university certainly helps a bit
  8. Oh I almost forgot. I'm going to cut off the front sight, like on a Remington R-15 or Bushmaster Predator after the scope arrives. And here's a quick sketch I made some time ago about the adjustable gas system: The text "Kaasuputki" is gas tube in finnish, and the black area is where the hole is being drilled to. So the adjusting screw/hole is also drilled partially through the gas tube. This was the only way I could think of it with getting enouch material around the hole.
  9. Well, I'm a student and want to make my rifle a bit more competitive, but I'm on a budget. So here you go with pictures. Sorry about the quality, some of them are cell phone pics. So here is what I have, a frankenAR: To get it started with, I modified the standard FSB into a adjustable gas system one. Tools used were angle grinder, drill press with 2.5mm bit and a M3 thread tap. I also found that there's some unneeded parts in the rifle: Removing the weights from buffer made it lighter than the JP lowmass buffer. If I'll start experiencing problems with bolt bounce, i'll add one of the weights back and it should cure the problem. It would still be lighter than JP LMOS. This is something I'm still working with: Now weights in at 234g with key, standard carrier being 263g with key. Hope you'll enjoy it and get some ideas yourself. Atm I'm waiting for my Millett DMS-1 and Burris PEPR mount. I know it's not Meopta or Swarovski, but I'm having problems shooting from prone with my glasses on, as the frame of my glasses sits almost right at the center of rear sight. Shot it today with the standard weight carrier and empty buffer, after adjusting the gas system (I used JP's manual for adjustable gas system as help, ) Was a blast! Recoil felt almost like I would be shooting a .22lr instead of .223 Edit: cost of modifications so far: 75 dollars for carrier and 14cnt for adjustable gas system ( I bought a spare carrier, just in case). Add 300 dollars more for optics and mount.
  10. I have 20" HBAR and its way too heavy for me. Im going to turn it down to med contour next week.
  11. It will work just fine. Add an adjustable gas block to equation and you get a lot less muzzle flip.
  12. Ar-15 with .22lr conversion of your liking.
  13. There are both right-handed and ambi versions available. I run a MOE, with a piece of rubber cutoff from old bicycle inner tube wrapped around it. WECSOG ftw
  14. Those arent made by me, just some other finnish ipsc shooters. Im not that good with machining, but some of my friends are... and im going to use the standard fsb as a starting point for the adjustable block.
  15. I'm not talking about 3-gun open as you understand it, as there is no 3-gun in the finland. So I'm just talking about open rifle. The current comp is F2. The trigger is home-mod with 2lbs bull, lighter than JP on my friends rifle, though with more overtravel. I'll buy the adjustable gas block if the WECSOG version doesn't go that well (got access to a machine shop so... *grin*) Well, we crazy finns have done that at home.
  16. I'm a student so I'll have to say that I'm on a budget. I'm getting a J-P Recoil Eliminator, gonna try to WECSOG a adjustable gas system, if that doesn't work i'll buy JP i think. A friend of mine promised to lighten the carrier for free and I'm also going to take the weights out of buffer. Anything else that I can do for a relatively small amount of money? I've heard some rumours about putting a hydraulic carbine buffer to the back of your buffer tube, reversed and shortening the original buffer. What's this all about? Can't really find any info about this anywhere... BTW, im going for Millett DMS-1 for optics, and thinking Burris PEPR for mount. Rifle in it's current config: Going for Open as my vision really isn't that good...
