Lucky You Dodged the bullet I'm curious: As one who is having problems with my 650 Primer mechanism ( I am getting repeated "Hard" Jams and upon disassembling the primer mechanism- am finding primers which look like an attempt was made to "Shear" the primer laterally) In retrospect.............................. Where there any indications there there might have been a problem before the Kaboom ?? 1) Jams? 2) Badly seated primers in finished cartridges ( upsidedown / sideways / seated crooked ) 3) failures to deliver a primer to the seater station 4) "Stiff" lever cycling 5) Uneven "feel" between succesive seatings of primers How Old is your 650 ? How long have you been using it? What caliber did this occur on? How many had you succesfull loaded in that session before the incident ( I'm guessing none afterward) OH YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What Brand of primers were you using ?????? P.S. Interesting.................. Are you suggesting then (Dillon) that it is a "Quality Components" problem Rather than Equipment ?? Since you note ( with out revealing specifics) that it is a general ( over all component manufactures ) problem.... what do We as Dillon owners and users do ??? Risking "Primer Volcanoes " is not an option. Even though Dillon proudly points out, that their Primer magazine design, "minimzes" the risk to life and limb in the case of one of those episodes......... My continued participation in the "Reloading Activity" would be severely influenced by "She who rules the House" in the event that the ceiling over our family recreation room, underwent major renovation. just above Where my 650 ....USED to Reside! ( MY.....Look at that "safety in mind designed Primer magazine " penetrating the acoustic tile of our "Family" (where my children kids play)....Rec Room ...into the tile on the Kitchen floor above, in the midst of all those (close to 100) "pock marks" in the area surrounding it ) ..... Never did find that plastic Primer follower...did we check the Attic? Now if we could only get the Cat down out of that tree ......and some fresh skivies maybe GOLF anyone ??

OK Gloooooook got my attention with the key phrase: Primer VOLCANO ! Thinking about those "Partially Sheared" primers. They may be getting "pinched" in the initial drop position from the primer magazine. This becomes a serious "Safety Issue" Dillon please take note... ( I know you are lurking out there ) Tim Vaughn..... How about a replacement/Loaner #21605

OK….. I have a persistent problem that I need to work out before it starts trashing parts. My problem is, that the small pistol primer disk on my 650 is “Jamming” while processing 9mm. I have already “bent” one Primer Indexing Arm, and am surely going to bend the new one that I took from my spare parts kit, unless I find and cure the “jamming” problem. On the question of “Which Side UP”: I am confounded that Dillon continues to insist that there is NO right or wrong sides to the primer disks in the face of so much apparent evidence as seems to becoming collected from users, to the contrary. I do not know which view is more correct. I would think that after all these years, the experts at Dillon would KNOW their equipment. Perhaps it is that with “some” primer disks, It makes no difference; while some others ( which may have been manufactured a bit differently), it Does! Perhaps the answer here is to request a “New” primer disk from Dillon which they have examined and pronounced to be “the same” either Side up, and which performs reliably with “either side up”. In any event, the problem manifesting itself in the “which side up” is NOT the one I am facing. That situation leads to problems where “UNUSED” primers do not drop free and jam the primer disk when to unused primer does not drop free and jams attempting to enter the “accept new dropped primer position in the primer disk rotation sequence. My problem seems to be that primers ( either at the time of being dropped or sometimes between then and when they appear on the primer punch) jam the disk, and if I am in a rhythm and push the handle too hard I start bending the primer index arm. It is a HARD Jam… Almost an absolute STOP. ( I am finding primers that appear to have been subjected to a “shearing force” that attempts to slice the primer in half laterally) I have been through the: 1) remove shell plate 2) remove primer mechanism 3) Remove primers from tube and plate base 4) disassemble primer mechanism 5) clean up and deal with the stacked up cases in the case feeder system 6) reassemble Then process a dozen or more cases before having to go through 1-6 again. I have examined all my parts. When manually indexing the primer disk, that is: reaching in and cycling it with my finger ( with the primer punch lowered of course)….it seems to have a lot of resistance to rotating ( more than I remember from past instances). But it feels smooth ( stiff but smooth) I can find nothing that appears to look seriously wrong…yet.. ( If I keep butting up against the jamming problem, I expect that I WILL ……bend another indexing arm. There DOES seem to be a little “gouging” in the brass end of the primer magazine (22032) where it mates against the shell plate as it spins under it. ALSO on the Primer Feedbody housing (21279) where the two parts mate up. I don’t know is this is significant or not, but My small primer disk IS scratched up a bit, It does not seem to be enough that is should be causing a problem. I HAVE lubricated the sliding against eachothers surfaces ( with GREASE not OIL). After a frustrating day: ( I managed to complete only a scant 120….. 9mm …..in SIX (6) hours of struggling with this problem), …………….I have been forced to “Sideline” my 650 (until I can get this problem resolved) I am for the time being, going back to my RCBS PiggyBack II). ( I am seriously running out of Ammo ). The problem is “somewhere” in the Small Primer Assembly (21605) Would it be out of line to ask that Dillon send me a new (certified properly functioning one ) complete? I would return my malfunctioning one and perhaps Dillon could figure out what is wrong, and tell me how to fix it. ??????????

Dillon: Thank you for your excellent and "To the point" advice. I believe you are right on about the "Bent" And your response brings up a point I've been thinking about for a long time. Lubrication! Why does the documentation ( at least that which I am familiar with) Not have a detailed discussion on: "Lubricating the 650" What should you lubricate? When / ( how often )? How?, and With What? I would appreciate one ( or direction to it if it exists ) Incidentally: I will lubricate my primer disk pivot post ASAP

I have been seeing a fair amount of discussion about this lately It grabs my attention because I just went through a long trama with mine recently Had all kinds of problems getting the disk to advance properly Finally wound up just replacing all the related parts from my spare parts kit. That fixed it, but I do not know what was wrong in the first place. Index arm - spring - index ball - spring It behaved as if the "hook" on the indexing lever was binding It would not reliably ( consistently) advance the disk and then retreat to the next ( one less) position. I looked carefully at the index arm, but it did not appear to be bent. Spring was not bent, seemed to be stiff The index ball and spring were "in position" but was unable to tell if they were "doing their thing" properly Question is: Which is the "right" / "up" (positioned facing toward the primer magazine) side of the disk. On mine, the Small disk is stamped "S" for small on BOTH Sides. It can be installed either side "up" Both sides "look" the same Not much help there.... It there a "Righ" and/or Wrong Side to the disk or Should it not make any difference ?? If it could make a difference, how do you tell which is correct?

I have one and love it. Dead accurate Dial in accuracy. One thing no one has mentioned Simple when you think about it, but could be the whole problem. Make sure that Your Powder measure is: IN THE "DUMP Position when you adjust the Micrometer Head! ! That is ....The Cavity which you are adjusting the "size" of is EMPTY ! If you try to Adjust the Bar when the "cavity" is full of powder.... You "Compress the Powder and just strain the micrometer screw.

I'm short. Can just barely reach up to dump cases in the case feeder bowl. It is not quite high enough to require getting something to stand on and Not quite low enough to reach without going to tippytoes. I often overstretch my calf muscles reaching.....Cramps ! Is it feasible ( or adviseable ): to "shorten" the case feeder Post and plastic drop tube. Say maybe 6 inches or so? What could it hurt ? Anybody ever done this? Any other suggestions? ( I've tried to grow a little, but it isn't working )

I load several (9 - 38 - .357 - .40 - .45 - .357Sig) calibers on my 650 [ with case loader ] I want to do .32acp Have a Colt 1903 - a WWII war souvener Beretta 1934 and a .32acp conversion cylinder for my Nagant Not a lot - but would like (I think) the capability to do it progressively I see Dillon does have a 650 conversion for .32 acp Does any one have experience with this caliber on a 650? Is it worth it ? I could load it (32acp)single stage on my rockchucker (I have everything for that) or Get a shellplate for my Piggyback and do it progressively on that or Invest in a 650 conversion Anybody have any experience or recommendations ALSO Does Lee make a Factory CRIMP Die That will work on the .32 acp? I see they do .32 H&R and .32 S&W Will either of these work on .32ACP ?? I really want the Carbide "Post Seating & Crimping" feature of the FCD more than the Factory Crimp ( I'm getting quite a few "fat/Bulged" Cases after Seating and Crimping when I load the .32 acp single stage) I've adjusted the crimp all over the place but I JUST CAN'T GET RID OF THEM (the bulges)

Where ARE the points that should be lubricated on a 650 ??

Finished rounds are "Jamming" in the shell plate coming out of station 5. Thje ejection wire is "Jamming them in the shell plate rather than "sliding them out into the finnished bin. 38 spl I have the ejection wire as flat (low) as possible over the shell plate. It is not any particular station in the shell plate It is NOT any particular brand of shell. It IS annoying I have examined the shellplate for burs....can find none. Have wire brushed out (by hand) the shell plate stations anyway. None of the above helped It is doing it once every 10-15 rounds When it jams I ease back on the handle (removing pressure of the shell against the ejection wire). The Finished cartridge is jammed in the shellplate slot. It requires quite a bit of effort to "spin it loose". Driving me nuts...( well, irritating me more than a little) What can I do ? ( besides wining to Dillon ) Grease on wire ? Grease in shellplate stations? (doesn't feel right to me )

Loading 38spl 650 "Jams" about once in 10 to 20 rounds/strokes of lever. Problem is in "pushing off" the completed round From the shell plate into the finished cartridge bin. All I have to do is: Ease off pressure on the operating lever.... then gently "twist" the completed round in the shellplate slot till it comes out, and falls into the bin. but It is getting to be a PITA. I have examined the shellplate slots/stations I could not see any "burs"...but I wire brushed (by hand - not dermel) anyway Didn't seem to help any. Should I ( is it ok to) put a dab of grease on the push off wire?? In the shots of the shell plate?? Anybody got any suggestions ( I DID e-mail Dillon....have not heard back from them yet )

Dillon 45 acp seating die. What is the "pitch" of the Dillon seating plug adjustment screw? More specifically: How much will 1 Turn of the seating stem reduce the cartridge OAL

I have set up 6 toolheads (each in a different caliber) for my 650. While doing so, I was not consistent in paying heed to the practice of: setting up/aligning the dies only with cases in ALL positions. I would like to go back and do so now, but if possible, without having to set up the dies all over again. Would it surfice to: A. 1) mount the toolheads one at a time with the platform UP and cases in every die position..............then 2) Loosen the lock rings one at a time and then tighten the lock rings back up. OR B. 1) mount the toolheads one at a time with the platform UP and cases in every die position..............then 2) loosen the lock rings of ALL the dies at the same time........and then Tighten them one at a time. If neither A nor B would properly do it: What could the group recommend as a proceedre for achiving "proper"alignment of the dies....hopefully without not having to set up the dies all over again.

Tackled .45 acp Came head to head with the Primer system. I'd like to watch someone do a .357Mag to .45acp changeover in 10 Minutes. To Marvel-Admire and learn how it is supposedly done. It took ME most of the morning. (Admittedly- after acomplishing it the 650 churned out beautiful rounds in quick time) I couldn't figure out how to get to the primer punch without partially dismanteling the press. At the very least removing the primer "Ski Jump". When I got to it, I couldn't get my 9/16 wrench on it. I finally got it off with a 19/32" that I had lying around (Dosen't everyone???). The 19/32 was big, but it worked. I believe that the nut IS supposed to be 9/16 like the manual says; but the finish on the nut is rough and try as I might, I couldn't get my 9/16 over it.

Competition Seating Die.......... hmm I assume it would have a micrometer screw seating stem, so I would only have to dial in the predetermined setting to adjust the bullet seating depth. Sounds like a good idea, but............... Should I have to change the seating stem ( Round Nosed to Semi Wad cutter ) or would a single bullet seating stem face serve for both.. Will a round nosed stem conform well to a semi wad cutter face?? It seems like it might actually "center the nose" better than a flat face What do you think ???

Please point me to the "little plastic magazine orifice". ie: Part number on an assembly drawing if you could or just amore detailed description. "SigLady" is good..................I have three!

I will check all of those things! re your third suggestion: When, where and how (sight angle): can I observe the "on deck" primer before it gets to the primer punch/bushing. I can't remember ever getting a window/opportunity for a look at it , at THAT point in the sequence. My only indication that "something bad has happened" other than the resultand bad round when boxing my finished batch; is A "rough" primer seat and/or a slight to severe "jam" in the shellplate rotating.
