  1. It's funny, all the talk of glocks biting people and I never encountered this with that platform. Lol. I even taped my thumb while shooting and it cut clean through three layers of duck tape.
  2. While putting 200 rounds down range today, I noticed a sharp pain in my thumb after the first 50 rounds. It appears as though the way I grip the gun with thumb over thumb, my strong hand thumb is riding against the lower edge of the slide and the sharp edges of the serrations are sawing into my thumb. I modified the trigger guard yesterday to gain a slightly higher grip. Well the by product was this. Any suggestions as to what I can do? I'd hate to change my grip as its constant and I've trained this way for years. I was thinking of filing the lower portion of the serrations to knock the sharp edges down a bit but its a new gun. Picture of my grip with strong hand and closeness of the meat of my thumb to the slide
  3. Well did some back to back comparisons between the 8lb spring and the 10 lb spring. I have to say, the 10 lb felt better, the 8lb actually made it feel even slower. I wonder if it was because the weak return to battery while chambering the next round? Regardless, out of 100 rounds fired between them, I didn't have any issues with the new 10 round mags or the different springs so that was a huge plus. 300 rounds down range so far and the gun has been flawless. I will be doing some further testing tomorrow if weather permits to see if the nose dives more with the 10 lb spring vs the 9 or 8. I will be loading some 124's next to see if that helps also.
  4. I'm SO'ing the NY State match in may. If any out of staters are on the fence for coming and shoot 9mm Glocks, I'll loan you four of my ten round mags for using during the match. I'm shooting Friday with the other workers so the mags will be available for the rest of the weekend. Just PM me and we can work out the details from there. Hope to see you at the match!
  5. Any idea as to why he stopped doing the finish? As far as I could tell, he was using the company that I am debating on using to refinish mine. I emailed Bobby two weeks ago and didn't hear back so I figured he was swamped with work. Don't know why but I'm sure he's busy and that may play a part in it. I will be getting this treatment as well on a 2011 and so far I've been told it's not a coating but more as a metal treatment that has little to NO thickness. MMI-trutec and H&M are the ones I'm looking at. Give an update as to who you go with and an after you get it back review. I plan on sending my parts out next month after I shoot the classifier for IDPA. I have components that I specify at work that get ferretic nitro-carburized, thin (.065") steel plates, for wear and abrasion resistance. This heat treat process is relatively a low temperature process when comparing to alternate methods but it is still close to the temperature at which the steels grain structure will begin to alter. So I want to be careful as to prevent distortion on the tight fits of this gun. The actual heat treat process is specified to be .0005-.001" deep. No material addition, just penetration.
  6. I'm going to hit the range today during lunch hopefully with 8lb, 9lb, 10lb, and stock 12lb? springs to compare against each other I also have to test out the new 10 round mags that I finally acquired On a side note, anyone have advice on the mag followers? All four of the new magazines have the followers sticking far above the top of the magazine tube. The front leading edge of the follower gets hung up on the open front edge of the magazine when depressed. I have to fiddle with them to get the first round loaded. I measured the feed lips and the open end of the tube in front of the lips, both are oversize by over .010" from the specified .350-.355" per STI's webpage. I can ground a bit of material off the leading edge of the follower to help guide them in, and lightly hammer the lips back into spec but is there anything else I should be looking for? The factory mag that came with the gun didn't exhibit this issue. I haven't shot the mags yet but I fear this will be an issue...

  8. Wow, lots of great feedback guys. I am very appreciative. I have 8, 9, 10, and stock recoil springs and replaced the mainspring with a 17lb one. I'll report back with range findings next time I get out to shoot. If these combos don't yeild a good result, I'll switch to 124s and see how I fair. It's hard finding bullets right now so I might be stuck eating up the 147s I have left to load. Hopefully the shortages don't last much longer.
  9. Awesome article, thanks for the link! I've read most of those articles but somehow misse that one.
  10. Yep, perfect sense. I'll look at this when I get a chance. Thanks!
  11. Great point! I did run my timer while shooting the rack. I'll look through the data from the last run and see what my splits were. I def didn't feel like I was waiting for the gun but just as you pointed out, slide felt very sluggish.
  12. I've got some 115 FMJs laying around. I'll cook them up to a nominal load and try that. I agree that I could encounter nose diving if I go heavier on the recoil spring. I really like how flat the guns shoots now and I dont want to jeapordize that. Anyone know of a good powder that's hotter than titegroup? That's the only pistol powder I'm using currently. I think I also have some MG 124 bullets laying around too. They would probably be a better trade off between the two mentioned all ready. Thanks everyone for your comments.
  13. Just found this thread while searching for solutions. Thoughts anyone? http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=157423
  14. Interesting thought and I understand what you mean, so here is the real question I guess...If a heavier recoil spring aids in the slide returning to battery faster, wouldn't it reduce the velocity that the slide travels rearward in the beginning of the recoil phase? Now on the other hand, a lighter recoil spring would allow the inertia of the slide to travel back faster due to the fired round in theory would also again due to the inertia of the slide, make it travel back into battery slower due to the friction of chambering another round. Which part of the recoil phase is it that I'm discerning I wonder, the "flight rearward, or the return home"? I could be all backwards on this but that is what makes sense in my finite head. So all the experts out there, whats the correct thinking on this?...
  15. So from my previous few posts, I acquired a new STI Eagle 9mm last week to shoot ESP in IDPA. I finally had the opportunity to take it out and get some range time and here are a few observations... The gun fits my hand like a glove and points very naturally. I come from the Glock world so the grip size is comfortable but the trigger is miles ahead of my best trigger I've had in any of my Glocks. In its stock form, I found that the gun was shooting point of aim at 10 yds and didn't need any adjustment for my style shooting. I haven't shot for accuracy yet and have only taken aim at a plate rack from 10-35 yds. My fastest time on the rack was 2 seconds faster than my best with my Glock 34 that's logged 17,000 rounds so that's a huge plus in my book - can only get better from here! Another observation is the slide to frame fit is great! Nice solid lock up and no free play yet butter smooth when operating. However the slide seems to move rather slow when firing. Its the first gun I've been able to track the front sight throughout the entire recoil phase. It seems to shoot very flat but a tad slow to cycle. After my first outing with the gun to check for reliability out of the box, I tore it down completely to take a look at the workings. I did a trigger job on it (stock trigger was setup with a nicely set pre-travel, over-travel, and reset but the creep was gritty and distinct), following the trigger massaging, I installed a 9 lb recoil spring, 17 lb mainspring, and STI magwell. Second time at the range yielded a slightly better performance on the plate racks, this time I didn't notice the slide as slow as previous but it was still distinctly slower than my Glock 34 that I'm used to. The trigger felt crisper and the magwell that I milled the sides down on to fit the IDPA box didn't effect my weak hand grip like I had wondered if it would. For reference, the loads I have shot so far are carry over from my Glock shooting. 147g CMJ, 130-132 PF loaded with Titegroup. With all this said, what are your recommendations to get a bit faster slide movement while maintaining the flat shooting that the gun exhibits? Thanks for any advice! 16. Status updated...I guess it pays to wait. My dealer I purchased the gun from emailed me today letting me know the 10 round magazines I put on backorder arrived and shipped. Now I wish I hadn't "jumped the gun" and bought several mags for a premium...hindsight is 20/20...But at least I'll have more than enough mags now to keep me running for years to come!
  17. I'm thinking about getting my brand new Eagle 5.0 refinished by Ferritic Nitrocarburizing. Specifically, I've talked to a gentleman that does side work for MMI-Trutec - their process is called ISONITE QPQ. I believe a few vendors here use this process and perhaps use this exact company to do their finishing services under different marketing names. I'm coming from shooting primarily Glocks in competition and have never had any corrosion issues with them. One of the things that has always irked me is how each of my carbon and stainless 1911's have always exhibited rust regardless of how well I maintain them. (I must have a high acidity content in my sweat) I've longed to have a 1911 qualities with the durability and corrosion resistance of a Glock. So that lead me to researching these finishes. My question is for those who have had this process done to their close tolerance firearms, does the slide, barrel, and frame fit suffer from the >1000F heat treat temperature that this process utilizes? I'd hate to refinish my slide, barrel, and frame only to find that the parts have warped and either don't fit together or worse yet become looser due to the excessive heat. Any thoughts or comments are greatly appreciated!
  18. There in lies one of the biggest issues with the new law. I won't get into this in great detail as this is not the place to discuss but in short our local law enforcement has publicly stated that they will not be able to uphold this new law so therefore they do not stand behind it. To further the issue, all of my preban AR and Glock magazines that I've acquired over the past ten years at a premium cost are now illegal to possess. So in short, the NYS government has made law abiding citizens like myself potential felons overnight. I have no choice but to surrender my magazines that hold in excess of 10 rounds over to the police, sell them out of state, or dispose of them permanently. Time to move...
  19. Man, everyone is out, the guy selling the ones I found sold them a few weeks ago. Guess ill have to back order and wait. Thanks for all the help though guys. Much appreciated.
  20. I'll give them a call - I'm in Elmira - hour west of Binghamton. thanks for the suggestion.
  21. I checked the classifieds and it appears the one for sale is standard capacity - and Gunbroker doesn't have any 10 rounders available anymore... I'll keep my eyes out - thanks guys for providing the heads up though! Edit - just found someone selling 10 rounders back in January, fingers crossed he has some left...
  22. I checked with Brownells this morning - they are in the same boat as Shooters Connection - they have no idea when the next round of ordered mags will come in. Looks like I bought the gun at the wrong time - I'll be sitting with a beautiful gun and no mags to feed it! LOL...
  23. thanks Jan for the response, I had Tripp mags when I owned my STI Spartan in 9mm. They ran flawlessly and the build quality was top notch. I just called Shooters Connection and they are out of the 2011 10 round mags and do not know when they will be restocked...Darn... I appreciate your comments though!
  24. Hello everyone, I just purchased my first 2011 handgun today - an STI Eagle 5" 9mm. I've owned a few single stack 1911's over the years and sold my last one a year ago. Looking to get back into a 1911 (2011) style gun mainly for IDPA, steel, and 3Gun. I've been shooting a Glock 17 and 34 for past six years in competition. Just missing that sweet single action trigger. To complicate things, I'm a NY state resident and within the next month will need to have secured enough 10 round magazines to last me as our new unconstitutional law states that after the 15th of April, we will no longer be able to buy magazines in excess of 7 rounds. And all of my preban "standard" capacity mags are now illegal to possess so I'm moving them to relatives in PA. So my dealer I purchased the Eagle from said he can order 10 round STI magazines but it may take a month to get. Anyone have a place that may have them in stock? I'd really like to secure these before its too late. I know how hard it is currently finding any magazines nation wide due to the circumstances our country is in but I figured if anyone would know it would be you guys. Also, once I have them, is there anything I will need to do to make them reliable? I've been searching high and low for information on these particular magazines but I haven't found much. I've read that standard capacity mags usually work fine in IDPA due to only being able to load them with 10 rounds. I'm concerned that the "10 round" mags that I buy may have issues as they will be fully loaded due to their designed capacity. Any other advice on this new gun is also appreciated. Its my first 2011 and I don't know anyone personally that has one that I can talk to about issues or things needed to make these guns run as reliable as my Glocks. Thanks everyone and sorry for the long winded post...
