  1. After Stammering my way through a rant about how long I had been going there, how you just when you think you have a gunsmith you can trust, blah blah blah, its the end of the world, blah blah. Finally the owner states he will make it right, Tells me to bring it back and he will personally zero it while I am standing there with him.

Making it right would also involve tearing the guy who didn't do it a new one and refunding your money. Even then I'd probably take my business elsewhere.

  2. Harvard? I missed last month's, but I'm hoping to be there on Sunday. There's tons of great matches to shoot within a reasonable drive from central MA. I currently try to shoot IDPA at Harvard and Worcester and USPSA/IPSC at Harvard and New Bedford. All run excellent matches. I haven't shot IDPA at NB other than the very excellent MA state championship they run every year. I recommend shooting both games if you have the time/money. They're both full of excellent people, and the crossover is growing.

  3. I hear you! I work with a guy who went through a bad divorce years ago and one thing led to another and he ended up in trouble with the law. Guess what? Every time he buys a gun he waits forever to get cleared.

There's a process he can go through where he gives NICS permission to retain his background check information. Once it's approved they'll give him a PIN to put on future 4473s to access the special record. It's called a 'voluntary appeal file'.

  4. The pace for all of the sports is the same. When your sights confirm that a shot will hit the A-zone/-0/whatever, break the shot. Don't focus on speed, focus on seeing the sights and calling good shots. Try doing a search on here for 'visual patience'.

  5. From what I've seen, the mark of stages that people of all skill levels have liked is choices. My favorite stages are the ones where after shooting them, I want to set them up in practice and run them on the timer 5 different ways and see which one is faster.

  6. But what about:

“Large capacity feeding device”, (i) a fixed or detachable magazine, box, drum, feed strip or similar device capable of accepting, or that can be readily converted to accept, more than ten rounds of ammunition or more than five shotgun shells; or (ii) a large capacity ammunition feeding device as defined in the federal Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, 18 U.S.C. section 921(a)(31) as appearing in such section on September 13, 1994. The term “large capacity feeding device” shall not include an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with,.22 caliber ammunition.

They specifically exempt a fixed tube for 22, so that suggests it is a LCFD on a shotgun. Anyway, I don't think there are any 3 gun matches here in MA anyway. I'll probably get the Benelli and an extension and then just put the extension on at matches out of state. The one USPSA club that's run a shotgun match in MA in the past has it listed as a rifle match this year. If I do shoot here, I'll just deal with the smaller capacity. I'm sure I can pick up a factory +2 tube for dirt cheap from someone who bought a tactical model and put a longer tube on it.

  7. Is your AWB a carbon copy of the federal AWB like NY? (NY's has minor changes) If so more than 5 is fine as long as you don't have a pistol grip, folding stock or barrel shroud. (none of which you need)

Otherwise if you MUST have those things, there are plenty of pre-ban HK marked Benelli's around and as mentioned truck loads of pre-ban 1100's.

It's a carbon copy of the fed ban. As I understand it, the shotgun itself isn't banned unless it has 2 or more 'evil features'. (Folding Stock, pistol grip, detachable mag, capacity >5) However I believe the a >5 tube is itself an illegal 'large capacity feeding device'. Are all HK marked Benellis pre-ban? If not, is there somewhere I can check serial numbers?

Thanks-I have often wondered about shooting in Massachusetts or some of the other states with those rules.I have a pistol grip on my Benelli and I know that doesn't fly some states. I have the regular stock just in case. Appreciate the advice. Probably better to get an M2 and do what you recommend-I don't have the regular mag cap and stuff for my M1.

The restriction apply to sales to residents.

All of MA's pistol BS is only sales to residents. However, the AWB applies to everyone AFAIK.

I think my plan is to keep an eye out for a pre-ban HK/Benelli, and failing that get an M2 field and just don't put the tube extension on in MA.

  8. I live in Massachusetts, where unfortunately we're stuck with a copy of the 94 Federal AWB. Basically, we're stuck in 2003. I've been shooting pistol matches for a few years and am thinking about dabbling in 3 gun. I'm building up an AR and I already have a pile of pre-ban mags. However shotguns are more complicated. The AWB says semi-autos with a capacity greater than 5 need to be pre-ban. What should I look for? I'm not looking to spend a lot of money, but I want something reasonably competitive. Suggestions?

  9. The other common culprit for MK3 stovepipes is the extractor. Swapping in the Volquartsen extractor has solved stovepipes on several of my friend's mk3s. It also solved the stovepipe problem on my 10/22 (same part).

  10. I found my K Dot new online for $600.

Me too. Now I just need the rest of my stuff to go in so I can take it shooting. Glass looks great, illumination levels are perfect. I love that there's an off in between each level. I'm gonna start getting really annoyed at my other dots that don't have this.

  11. Learn to shoot accurately. Start at 25 ft and work to 25 yds. Start slow at first and build speed. Speed will show all flaws at 25 yds that weren't apparent at 25 feet.

I agree. I shot a season of indoor bullseye this winter, and it's definitely helped my action pistol shooting. After shooting that itty bitty 10 ring at 50 feet, A zones / down 0s look gigantic.

  12. There is no major or minor in IDPA. Different divisions have different power floors though. SSP, ESP, and SSR are 125000 (same as USPSA minor) and CDP and ESR are 165000 (same as USPSA major).

  13. LOL- in all fairness I was giving your idea some thought when Mark (designed stage) and I talked about it more and decided it was the best way. I was just concerned a tad about my "conditioning". ;) His run was actually a tad faster than mine but he had many more points down. It was a great stage. My total for that stage was 17.87... so it was actually only 4.73s faster.

There's a mistake in the match results then, they show 12.87. 5s faster makes a lot more sense than 10.

  14. One stage had some tough shots and multiple optional shooting positions (skills drill). I shot from one position and hauled ass to another final shooting position to finish up... maybe 15yds. I beat everyone on that stage by almost 4 secs. I was very pleased with this run, not only because there are many younger/more fit shooters that did the same and didn't get similar results. I've been working out recently so maybe it helped. I was aggressive getting into the shooting position coming in with the gun ready high. I didn't even notice being winded and my shots were all clean. Down one for the entire stage- 9 targets.

That's what I get for talking strategy. You use my stage plan and beat me by 7 seconds.

That was a great stage, I love when there are lots of choices like that.

I think it's a good thing that you still always notice things you want to improve. When that stops, either you're the best, or you're stagnating. That's one of the big things I noticed when I started taking this game more seriously. Now I see lots of places to save time in every run. I feel like I'm really in the meat of the improvement curve, and I'm really enjoying it.

  15. I'm still struggling with this as well. I realize that I will be stuck in B-land unless I smarten up. I have the skills- they need to be refined. Competition and my desire to win will help motivate me.... I know it!

When I beat you in a match, maybe that'll help the motivation.

I find motivation in various places. Seeing the videos that better shooters post and wanting to get there is a big one for me. Also, people have started to notice my improvement and comment on it, which is a great positive feedback loop.

  16. I love my M&P 9 Pro. The thing that turns me off of the GP6 is needing to decock with the trigger for each stage. That, and I don't like DA/SA guns in general. Also, the M&P is made here in the USA, for those that matters to.

  17. Thanks G-ManBart. I am thinking I will get a XDM in 9mm. For now my son and I can both use it a bit, and if I really like it I will probably get one for myself in 40. I think one of the things that appealed to me about it is the grip angle seemed closer to the 1911 that I'm used to than what the Glocks are.

The M&P has a 1911 style grip angle and interchangeable grips also. It has the advantage of being made in the USA (for those that care about such things) and a rapidly growing aftermarket.
