  1. Hey all, Just purchased a sweet custom built STI Eagle from a forum member here. Gun is great...just one small issue that i've found that i'm hoping y'all can help me with... The gun has an Ed Brown Ambidextrous safety. I need this because I am a LEFTY. When I disengage the safety, the left side safety is pinching the web of my left hand between my thumb and forefinger. The attached picture (sample photo, not actual gun) shows a red oval..that is the area where the web of my left hand is getting pinched.... Yes...I have large hands that are somewhat meaty...it looks like there is a small shelf on the grip running along the bottom of the safety and when I grip the gun some of my skin is being pushed into that area between the shelf and the safety. When I disengage the safety and it rolls downward, the gap between the bottom of the safety and the shelf is reduced and the skin of the web of my hand between the bottom of the safety and the shelf get's pinched. I did find a different sequence in my target acquisition that has helped...after I draw and clear my holster, and while coming up on target, I disengage the safety (with my finger OFF THE TRIGGER and gun pointing downrange towards target of course) before I get a full grip. Once on target, I slightly adjust my grip a bit higher...this seems to prevent any skin from the web of my hand getting caught below the safety and the shelf in the grip. (I used to grip, acquire target, and after aligning sights disengage safety....) So without changing how I grip & acquire anyone have other suggestions? File and shape the safety to give more room in the "gap"? Use a different "Thicker" ambi-safety to eliminate the gap? Sand down the shelf a bit to give more room? Thanks! Z-
  2. I can carry a 34. But for me I'm not a real tall guy and in a patrol car the gun will be buried in the seat lmao.I opted for the 17 because it was a tad bit shorter but still retain the capacity. I did order the TTI sights and I might drop in a TTI connector kit....... Seems like a decent option without changing a ton of stuff in the gun. Anyone use the TTI kits? If you aren't that tall....try a thigh rig if your department allows. It's good for either G17 or G34 as it gets the weight of the gun off your hip, and when sitting in a patrol car it doesn't dig down into the seat...although it may slap the center console a little! LOL....
  3. Oh it's doable...I usually shoot a 280-285 out of 300 (265 is passing)...guess I should clarify that the target (10/9/8/7 rings) are 8" diameter....to pass most shots need to be in the 10/9/8 rings...so realistically more like a 6" target (10 rounds @ 25 yards, 10 rounds @10 yds in 15 sec's, 10 rounds @ 10 yds in 10 sec's...30 rounds in all).... That sounds like a decently tough course of fire. It also sounds a bit detached from the skills you might need in a gun fight.Sounds like a very good score. Tom Ps, I live in Ferguson, and I saw a lot of despicable things done to our officers. I never appreciated how much poise officers could have until then. I thought it sounded like a fairly benign COF. 30 rounds every 6(?) to 12(?) months. I know a lot of officers and deputies who only shoot when they qual It is benign...but is just 1 of 2 COF's we fire. The other is a combat course with 60 rounds from 20 yards down to close contact and in between firing strings to get your heart rate up we do pushup's, air squat's, and a run around our range building. Our SRU Team trains minimum of 8 - 16 hours a month on shooting and tactics. But...will agree...can never get enough firearms training....
  4. FlightMurse....went with the Edge...drop in with no fitting required. Trigger feels good for a carry piece...I'm sure more dry-firing and firing will lighten it up some more.
  5. Just thought I'd post....an older Canadian built P16-40. Changed hands a few times...had some work done: trigger job, tri-topped slide, fiber optic front, new adjustable rear, fitted Ed Brown bushing. Took her out for a spin today after sitting in the safe for awhile (went back to Glocks for a bit).... She shoot's lights out with my reloads (180 grain Berrys, 5.3gr's UNIQUE, 1.135" OAL).....1" and sub-1" groups at 50 feet (16 yards - max indoor range distance). Love the size and weight. Have a new STI Eagle, custom built that just arrived...so will have to compare and see which becomes #1 and which becomes backup... LOL
  6. I have a P16.40 with some work done...scary accurate gun (1"groups at 17 yards - max indoor range distance). I tried the Mecgars with Dawson extensions....could only get 18-19 non-reloadable and had some feeding issues. I found some used Canadian made Para P16-40 mag's at Numrich Gun parts (www.gunpartscorp.com). With the Dawson extensions and Plus magazine springs I can get 20 reloadable no problem. The other hot mag is the MBX magazine for Para-Ordnance. Some have had good success with them and with the right follower I've heard some can get 21 reloadable. The Mecgar's are OK for spares...but from experience I'd stick with Canadian made Para mag's or the MBX. The other option is you can get a mag release from Canyon Creek Customs for your Para that will allow you to run STI/SVI mag's....
  7. If total weight is equal to a standard TLR-1, you should be ok. I have seen very few malfunctions with the TLR or M3 lights on Glocks, and we have quite a few running them at my PD. If it weighs more, try removing some of the lead shot. The other fix would be what others suggested...changing recoil spring weights. Trial and error...welcome to the world of "tweaking for competition"...LOL
  8. My Agency is transitioning to Glock 17's & 19's in the next year or so. With that said, our Firearms Instructors have also been trying out the Heinie straight eight sights and Vickers magazine floor plates. They like both. I've tried the Heinie's myself (on our Instructors weapon) and I have to say that I like them. Quicker to line up on fast shots, easy to acquire, and easy to see in low light or bright light. I'll probably eventually get a set for my practice weapon...
  9. How much lead shot do you have in it? What is the weight? I run a TLR-1 on my duty G22 and haven't had any issues with it... It did shoot a bit lower than normal, but I attest this to the additional weight up front and my getting used to it.
  10. Hey all...so I purchased a G43 Blue Label for off-duty carry. I ordered Taran Tactical +2 and +1 mag extensions and the Ghost "minus" connector, and a set of Ameriglo Tritium sights (same as on my duty weapon). Put it all together, polished up some of the trigger components, and did some dry-firing. Nice little weapon. I don't have a trigger gauge, but feels about 4.5lbs or so. Good hard & quick reset, some pre-travel, but I'm used to taking up the slack to the wall and then breaking the shot. I like the thinness and it handles well. It is a bit small in my hands, as I have LARGE hands. But...I can almost get a full grip on it with the +2 extensions and those extensions don't add much, if any, height in comparison with the standard magazine that comes with it. I compared it to my G27 with a Pearce +1 extension and it is just about the same size in height and length, just THINNER. I ordered a Cross Breed mini-tuk that I use for it (have these for my other carry weapons), and it conceals EXTREMELY WELL in shorts & T-Shirt. Great carry gun. I have a Glock sight pusher, so I installed the new sights and sighted them in out to 12 yards. This is an off-duty, close encounter weapon....although I did take some shots out to 50 ft (16-17 yards) and it performed well. I ran rounds through it with the TTI extensions and had NO FAILURES at all! It is a bit snappy and with a shortened sight radius you HAVE TO FOCUS on the front sight and do your part. When I got lax, shots were pulled left (I am a LEFT-HANDED shooter). When I insured a solid grip and focused, the gun did it's part well. I did notice that due to my large hands, there was a bit of a gap between the grip and my support hand, which caused the gun to jump to the left while under recoil. Once I insured my support hand palm had good contact with the grip that jump/twisting subsided. Attached are photos of the gun in my hand to show it's size, and with the Taran +2 extensions. The target with the Center Mass shots is 50 rounds at 10 & 12 yards. The target with Center Mass and Head shots were at 10 yards. All in all, a good off-duty carry weapon. Some more practice, and maybe a slight drift to the right of the rear sight should clean up the shots. http://s280.photobucket.com/user/zipper046/library/G43%20Outing?sort=3&page=1
  11. 5.3 - 5.5 grains UNIQUE under a Berry's 180gr plated FP at 1.135" OAL. Runs great in my G35 and EXTREMELY ACCURATE out of my Para P16-40 (1" - 1.25" at 15 -17 yards)....Oh, and makes MAJOR....
  12. My duty rounds are the Speer Gold Dot 124 +P and they've been 100% reliable in my two G19s. Our Agency carries Speer Gold Dot Gold Dot .40 S&W 165gr in our duty G22's...BUT if we choose to carry off duty in 9mm our off duty authorized 9mm ammo is Speer Gold Dot 124 +p . Functions 100% in G19, G43....great round....
  14. I have a sight pusher I bought since I have a whole family of Glocks....but I have not seen any issues with others I know using a punch for installation. Just make sure if it is super tight, file SLIGHTLY to fit.....makes installation easier.
  15. Good write up! I have a G43 for off-duty carry also....cannot say enough good things about it. I carry in a Crossbreed IWB w/ Taran Tactical +2 extension and it just disappears when carrying....
  16. our Agency restricts ANY modifications on our duty weapons....Patrol = G22 w/ NY1 trigger & standard connector (~7lbs), Detectives = G23 w/ NY1 trigger + std connector, UC's = G27 w/ NY1 trigger + std connector. I'm in Patrol and on our SRU (Special Response Unit). We have G22's with NY1 trigger + "minus" connector (~5.5lb trigger w/ quick reset) and TLR-1 lights. I've been an advocate for 1911's for the SRU members OR better triggers....we have 2 firearm quals...1 combat course and 1 bullseye course at 25 yards....my mantra is "if you expect me to shoot an 8" target at 25 yards with a handgun...give me the tool to do so"
  17. basic tritium sights from Ameriglo....work great and are same as my duty weapon sights....never a problem with them... z-
  18. as others have said....a light spring (4#) will require a lightened striker to function reliably...and even then you may get light strikes.... also, if you are reloading, make sure primers are seated fully...sometimes if they are not you will get a light strike (it hits primer and seats it rest of way, but doesn't set it off)....
  19. what telecat said...looks like extractor tension is too much and not allowing the round to slip up under the extractor hook...i'd have the extractor re-tensioned and polish up the feed ramp (you can do both of these yourself...not terribly difficult). That might do it...if it still doesn't work you can always send it to the 'smith.
  20. got my email confirmation today for my mag extensions! TTI Rep called me directly while I was working on patrol to confirm my order....GREAT SERVICE!!!! Thanks TTI!!!!
  21. I usually use a piece of bicycle inner tube as a grip sleeve on my duty weapon. Works great, very grippy even with sweaty hands. with that said...I also use good old regular stair tread no slip tape. I made my own templates using heavy construction paper and just use those to trace out and cut grips from the stair tread no slip tape. Works great and I can get differing textures of tread tape....
  22. I use piece of bicycle inner tube....works GREAT! plenty of grip with or without gloves, can cut it to cover as much or as little as you want, and it's cheap (actually cost me nothing, had a couple old bicycle tubes laying around).
  23. I don't own a Kahr, but have shot them. Not a bad little gun. I think the trigger on Glock is better and offers more upside (things you can do to it to make it better...). Can't go wrong with a Blue Label Glock...can always sell it and make back your $$.
  24. Arredondo's with Dawson and JP Enterprises magwells....no issues. Have had them now over 6 years and only had 1 crack when dropped this past year...20 rounds reloadable with standard glock mag's and +10% mag springs.... That being said...have a set of TTI's for my new G43 on order...if they work out well, I'll probably be putting in an order for my G35.... Z-
