  1. PUH-leaze do not worry about a fricking Chronograph at a steel match.......

I was told at the Big match in Kali years ago that little addition was made due to some "really" light loads not activating the sensor on the stop plate. They came up with an arbitrary number that "would" activate the sensor on the plate.

I know for a fact many of the Big shooters shoot 90-100PF loads with obvious success, and I shot a 88gr jhp for a 95PF for several years before switching to a 115gr load. NO PROBLEM.

I can just imagine some well meaning Match directors seeing that in the rules and think that they need to chrono steel loads.....argh....

Folks, the only match with sensors on the plates is the match in Kali, I know after this year's Steel Nats in FLorida they have given up trying to use the stop plate sensors. You just have to hit the plate and make a mark.....

Find a light load that your gun functions at 100%, add .02grain of powder to the load and go have fun!

What pf did you run for Limited in Florida? I ran a 115gr at about 125pf. I was wondering if I should experiment with a lower pf.

  2. An instructor like Matt Burkett does not need to demonstrate his skill. You are taking his class because you know he has won a lot more championships than you. Therefore, you can learn a lot from him. If your students are not sure of your abilities, they will be more likely to question your techniques. If you are able to show them that your abilities far exceed theirs, they will be more likely to listen. If you show them that their abilities far exceed yours, you are in trouble as an instructor.

One of the best ways to get better is to see someone do something that you thought was not possible. If you can shoot faster and straighter than your students you will be raising the bar for them.

  3. I just sold my SDB to a friend who is getting in to shooting and reloading. He is using a M&P 9 w/ 115gr Precision moly flat points. He started at 1.125OAL, this is what I loaded in my STI. He said he was having jams with the chamber not closing completely. I think the oal may be a bit long. I had him shorten the length to 1.1. What OAL do you guys suggest for this bullet in the M&P?

    Thanks.

I would'nt think that was too long. He may be having other issues, sizing or crimp maybe?

I checked his sizing and crimp and I don't believe they are an issue.

I posted a question about this same bullet (115gr Precision moly flat point) in another thread - I've been looking for load data for 115gr FP cast bullets with no luck. I was able to find 114gr cast LRN data but that leaves me guessing about OAL. I reload .45 ACP and .45 Colt but I'm wary of messing with OAL in a 9mm round.

Which powder/charge do you use with this bullet?

In my 5" STI my records show,

4.2gr of Tightgroup w/ OAL of 1.125 is about 130pf

    4.7gr of Solo 1000 w/ OAL of 1.138 is about 130pf

My friend, shooting his M&P 9, was at 4.1gr of Tightgroup w/ OAL of 1.125 and said it felt considerably lighter than the factory ammo he was shooting.

  6. The drawing for the guns would be random. Everyone who shoots in that division gets one ticket for the gun. So if someone who normally shoots limited, decides to try SS because there are only 5 people signed up for SS, but there are 30 signed up for limited, they just improved thier odds at winning a gun.

For reasons I've expounded on elsewhere, I'm philosophically opposed to random drawings. FWIW according to a poll I took a while back, so are most shooters:

So this would make me less likely to come. Give a gun out to the winner of every division and I think you might have something.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks this way. What ever happened to rewarding excellence? What are we teaching our children? I wonder why our country is in the state it is in? I guess this way nobody has to practice before the match to try to get better.

  7. Just got some components to start loading 223. I have never loaded rifle before. I plan on coming up with a load tomorrow, chronoing, and loading up several rounds. I will be using AA2230 w/ 55gr fmjs. It will be very cold tomorrow here, probabably around 20-25. How temp sensitive is AA2230 and is it reverse temp sensitive?

Also, what power factor should I aim for, for 3 gun?

    Thanks.

  8. I just got one of the Eotech 4x Chinese Knock Offs from Ebay for $120 to use with my Eotech for 3 gun. Came with the flip over side mount and everything. I think the Eotech version costs almost $800 for the same setup. Now, I'm sure it's not the same quality as the real thing but for 3 gun it will work just fine. You may want to check them out.

How is the clarity compared to other optics?

  9. I love the prize table. I usually finish high enough to have a reasonable selection. It gives me the opportunity to try things that the wife won't let me buy.

If I won cash, she'd just make me take her out for dinner.

    (tounge in cheek)

    +1

A good prize table just makes the match more interesting brings out better competition which makes a win or good placement mean something.

  10. I chronoed a few today at 133pf at around 45 degrees. I put some on the floor board with the heat cranked on them for about 15 minutes, and they chronoed at about 130pf. I also had some Solo 1000 loads that I ran the same test on and they dropped about 2pf. I guess I will break down and get a 8lb canister of WST. I hope I won't be dissapointed.
