  1. At Long last,, after MUCH,, pain and suffering,, The Gun runs,,,, what did I do,,,, Changed out parts until The gun worked,,,

the only thing that is now DPMS,,, is the upper,,the lower and the charging handle! The Gun is now a JP,, --Rainier Arms Barrel Bolt and carrier,,

Jp trigger and gass Block,, I adjusted it Just like Benny said,,, and the gun runs,,,

Thank you for all the Help,,,

  2. Jim,

Don't forget Black Hills may have a non-cannister powder, and probably are listing velocities from a 24" bolt action. I have used 23.5 of Varget with Rem 7 1/2 primers. Velocity was around 2600. I think it shot 3 inches at 300 yards.

Oh ya, I always look for the test gun info,,

Nosler,, data I looked up is from a 20 inch,, and I too have a 20inch so, the data should be close,,

  3. What is the optimum Velocity for accuracy 77 GR

With a 20 inch barrel, 1/8 twist. What is the Velocity that gives the best accuracy?

I’m asking the question that way, because it has been difficult to find the same type of powder on a regular basis, s

So before I start working up loads, with, TAC, Varget, and some R-15. And some other powders, as time goes on.

What velocity should I be trying to get. ?

I would do some ladder testing and find out what load your rifle shoots the best and not worry about velocity.

    Pat

I'm trying to cut the R&D time,, and get too it, I shoot a Horus, so getting my holds/drops is not a problem,,

Your not going to cut time. Different rifles shoot loads differently. You need to find what your rifle likes. There is no magic velocity. In fact accuracy had little to nothing to do with velocity and more to do with barrel harmonics. Here are some loads with the 77 grain Sierra and Nosler that have worked well for me.

Looking at data,, and looking at Black Hill's and other 77 factory data,, they list it running at 2750FPS,,,, that looks way high, they probably have a way to crimp the primers in,, most of the other data,, I have found is in the high 2500's and that is OK,, it looks like all of your data and groups are great,, any group under an inch, is good, pushing it out at distance, will give you truth,, I used to have a 200 YD range at my house, I would test,, new load data with 200 yd groups,, I did half and inch at 200 a few times,, with one gun,, shooting, 60 Gr V-max, shot that barrel out,, and am working up ,, other loads,, this gun, with this load,, will be the gun I shooting at my next RM3G, that match has some real rifle shooting 200+ yds,

  6. Yes yes Great match, Thank you so much To, JJ, Denise

And all of the RO’s Without OR’s and match staff you have NOTHING!

I’m old and slow, and place at this match lower every year,

But I still Love this match.

RM3G is my Favorite match! With the History of the match, the NRA Whittington center and the challenge, of the stages,
The whole experience and Quality father and Son’s! Time.
Great memories that will last lifetimes,

I won’t be able to do the world shoot thing next year
Unless I have a lotto win, and a Job that gives more Vacation time, I’ll have to wait out the World, and plan on the 2015 RM3G

  7. Hey,,, the Zero range,, they used to have steel up,, from 300 On out,,,

last year they moved the Steel tgt,,, has anyone been to the Zero range this year??

do they have some steel up at 300?????????????

They did when we shot the He Man.

Thanks for the info,,,,, That would be cool,,,, We run a 300 yd zero, and it is very nice to be able to verify,, by just hitting the steel, at 300,,

  8. Here's the ROUGH TARGET count!!!! TARGET not rounds!!!!

Subject to change...and they will!!! :surprise: But this is close!

    Stage 1 – Rifle/pistol gully run - 15 rifle, 17 pistol

    Stage 2 - Holy Crap 3 - 36 birdshot

Stage 3 - long rifle - 22 rifle plus longest shot at 1400 yards with Barrett

    Stage 4 – 12 rifle, 12 pistol, 8 birdshot, 4 slugs

    Stage 5 – run and gun 3-Gun - 8 birdshot, 4 slugs, 12 pistol, 12 rifle

Stage 6 – Choicy stage - 30 targets for rifle/slugs at least 10 of each

    Stage 7 – Shotgun/pistol run and gun - 3 pick-up targets, 14 pistol, 4 choice, 8 birdshot

Stage 8 – LONG pistol gully – 30 plus pistol

    Stage 9 – 3-Gun – 15 rifle, 12 birdshot, 12 pistol

    I forgot to toal: I think that's:

86-96 rifle TARGETS from 5-600 yards

97-101 pistol TARGETS from 1-60+ yards

    72-76 birdshot TARGETS

    18-28 slug TARGETS

I THINK I added correctly, but I just got back from a trip with my mom to Ohio for a wedding, so I'm a little dazed! :roflol:

And now back to finishing up the He-Man stages!

    See you all soon!

    Denise

Oh Ya,, I'm loading Ammo now,, for Me and the Son's,,,, I cast,, so Pistol bullets, and Shotgun Slugs,, are no problem,, just making time to cast and load, , finding rifle bullets, is,, more of a challenge,,, as for Powder and Primers, as we all know the best kind is the kind you can find!,, I still have lots to do,, but I'm on the down slide.. of loading for the match.

  9. Had extraction/ejection problems with my 16"AP4 when new. I replaced the extractor spring with heavy duty Wolff spring, didn't help. Mostly the empty would be pulled from the chamber and just lay on top of the magazine. I ended up using 2 rubber o rings around the extractor spring (smallest they had at Ace Hardware store) which cured the problems 100%. Beyond my expectation they are holding up and they appear to be oil resistant.

Jut thought I'd mention it, as its a cheap thing to try.

thanks,,, I got some,, but have not had a chance to try it,,, the ones I got look a lil big,, I did get the smallest ones they had,, but I will try to put them in.

and OR,, I'll look at some other hardware store,, for some others,

  10. Here is more info on the gas situation that Jim forgot to mention, when we were shooting if you turned the gas adjustment screw in, to cut off or lessen the gas the gun would throw brass3-5 feet away from the gun, but if you opened the port up to give it more gas it just allow the brass to trickle out of the gun, maybe 1-2 feet away. Going to the heavy buffer only bandaids the issue it does not solve it, the gun still only runs 5-15 rds and then malfs, when we tried the BCG from one of my guns it would be the same thing so it doesn't appear to be a BCG issue. Also my BCG runs just fine in my gun it went thru 50 rounds just the other night at piggies!! it could easily be gas tube, gas block, barrel port, chamber, or simply the interface of all the gas related parts. His load seems to be a good middle of the road load for a 155gr bullet, 2700ish fps. We also tried shooting my ammo in his gun, also a 155gr bullet at 2700ish fps, and got the same issues. We thought that his gas tube being a bit shorter than mine (1/4") was the issue but he replaced it with a slightly longer one and still has the issue.

I think its a parts problem stemming from too many different makes and manufacturers. Anyway Jim will probably be shooting a LaRue OBR with the new Bushnell Tactical 1-8.5x at RM3G, so don't feel too bad for him.

    trapr

Thank you! Trapr,,,,,,,,,,,, I appreciate the Loaner, more than I can tell you, ,,,,,, JJ (RM3G) always asks if I'm going to shoot He Man, to get the numbers up in that shooting class,, and its fun to shoot the smaller divisions,, too,, hey everyone needs someone to beat!! But then again with a Gun that is going to work, I can concentrate on shooting the match and not gun smiting mid stage,,

I have been fighting this gun for a long time,, now I'm just to stupid and stubborn to give up on it,,,

Some day this gun will work,, and I’m sure in the end it will be something so Obvious it will be embarrassing, but on the other hand, I’m not the only one with this problem, lots of AR’s in 308 have this same problem.

If I had the equipment, ( Machine Shop) to do some real machining, I would re-design the bolt with an extractor twice the size of the one, currently on 308 bolts, with double springs.

  11. Sorry, left out the word "lock"

I have been ,,, adjusting the Gas block,, and just about the time I run,, 10 or 12 rounds,, and I'm getting all happy,,, F#@!$$$$K FTE

Making the buffer heavy, helped allot,

Fail to extract,,, is still the problem,,, so somehow,, getting the gun to pull out that brass, is my goal,,

At this point I don’t care if it rips off the case head.. just as long as it pulls something out of the gun,,

  12. M Ammo,

Do me a favor... remove your bolt, take a casing and see how easy it is to hook the casing on the extractor. Once hooked, use the case to manually compress the ejector spring and see if the extractor holds the case rim properly.

A few weeks ago I finished up a 223 build and installed JP LMOS with brand new Enhanced bolt. I was getting some FTE's where the spent case was sometimes (about once per mag) left sitting on top of the magazine and gummed up the works. I noticed that it was harder to hook the case on the extractor with this particular bolt, than with others. I swapped the extractor and the problem was solved. I realize mine was a 223 problem an not a 308, and that you have already swapped extractors, but at least check this off your list of potential root causes. Did you ever get a chance to swap in a buddies BCG?

I have played with the and put his JP bolt in my gun,,, hmmmmmm

I'm still waiting on an e-mail from the JP folks,,

but I'm going to play with the extractor, spring and Rubber O rings,, Hell I might just JB wield it in and see what happens,

all the ammo fall in and out of my JP case gage,,,,,,, and I can hand cycle the ammo through the gun,,,

    hmmmmmm

I know I'm not the only one that has this problem,,, if i shot off a bench all the time,,, its no big deal,,,

But in 3 Gun, NOPE,,, the gun needs to run!,

  13. In your very first post you say you have the heavy duty spring under the extractor.

I'll ask again (because I'm a glutton for punishment) do you have the DPMS p/n 308-bt-08 spring with two (not one) #1 o-rings around it?

The heavy duty AR15 spring won't work.

Do you have the adjustable gas block on it?

I put on a JP,, gas block,,, so yes,,,

I have tried, 3 different extractor springs,,, now,, and the lil black inset thing is in it,,

and I will,,, get some #1 o-rings and put in 2ea,,,,,, sounds like a good idea,,, thank you,, funny,, but once I read it,, I thought,, DAAA I should have thought of that,,

  14. Still having the same problem, fail to extract,, I can got a 10 shot string,, then it will not extract,,, next time it will do it on the first round,, then I can get 15 shots off,, then a FTE the only part of the gun that is now original is the bolt carrier,, stripped upper and lower,,,, I don’t have much left to change,,,

Used Factory ammo ,, hand loaded ammo,, many types of ammo,,, same problem,,

the only parts left is the bolt and carrier,, I have tried, a JP bolt in the Gun,, thanks Trapr… it did the same thing,, and I did put a longer gas tube in the gun,, a so called 308 tube,, it did not change the,, FTE issue,,
