  1. You can probably contact Bomar....I purchased a few spares from them several years ago....and installing a new pin is no biggie.....

For the record I have had Caspian pins break on me never a Bomar....

All of my guns have Bomars now.... go figure...

    Good Luck

    Joe

  2. Putting in my 2 cents here.....

You just can't go wrong with a 550B, the best thing you need to keep up production is extra primer tubes.... I have 6 large and 6 small, just take you time and load them up then you can easily knock off 500- 600 rnds an hour after a little practice and careful setup......

add in some spare toolheads and powder measures for quick change over and you have all you wil ever need......

I can't say enough about the guys at Dillon either...best product support I have ever seen....

Mine is almost 10 years old.....maybe 250,000 rounds....still runs like new.....

Good Luck what ever you do,

    Joe

  3. Carinab,

I had the same probem several years ago...... I started using brandy new ISMI springs with either Bevens para follower or stock para followers....

The last few rounds were very tight going into the mags....The only way I could get them to run was ... not to fill the mags....

I should note I was shooting a P-14 with stock mags using Grams Base Pads and ISMI 140 MM mag springs.....

After thinking about this for a while...I shortened the mag springs ... maybe 2 coils and all of a sudden 100% functioning with full mags (18rounds in 45acp) ......

My best guess is try trimming one or 2 coils and see how they work...

    Good Luck,

    Joe

  4. You can also try SOlO 1250 with the 200's,

Try starting at about 5.4g and work up till you make major....

5.9 gr of 1250 with a 200 gr swc and fed 150's get me about 180 + PF... a little hot now

The load shoots very nicely, soft, the powder is clean burning and meters well in dillon equipment, I like the fed 150's they seem to be more consistent the say win LP primers,

    LOA about 1.250 firm crimp

depending on how your gun is setup I am using about a 13# recoil spring and 1 shock buff.

Again this is a nice handling load... the pressures are not as high as if you were loading clays or solo 1000...

    Take Care & Good Luck..

  5. Hey Guys,

I have been running short of excuses for poor performance lately so I thought I would try something new.

Am thinking of having my local smith fit me a new 40 top end on my Para P-14 frame.... anyone think of a reason I should avoid / embrace this ? Thinking like a 2011 slide with a Schuman Barrel... some bomars .....

Any and all input will be appreciated..

    Thanks

    Joe

  6. Just my .02 cents....

I have been to Fredericksburg several times for matches and this was by the far the best match I ever attended there. Besides the weather being the absolute nicest that I have ever had at a match there, the stages were pretty limited/limited10/production friendly......unlike some matches that were most challenging......and probably intimedating for newer / less expierenced shooters....All in all a great match ....nice facility ....great Range Staff.....hats off to Larry & Linda....

  7. I have been shooting 255's for the last 5 years....my setup has been 4.6-4.8 gr of solo 1000, FED 150's LOA 1.190, pretty firm crimp, these loads have run reliably, my source makes a hardcast 255 which he swages down to .451 for me. I use about a 13# spring & 1 recoil buffer...in a pair of P-14's. Once you you get your loads worked out you will find that this setup shoots pretty softly and accuratley. The gun handles very nicely...even one of the Big 3 has shot my gun and pretty much told me not to change a thing...

There are other loads out there using clays that pretty much match what I get with the Solo 1000.

    Heavy Bullet...Fast Powder......

    Good luck...

  8. qstik

    Good luck with the XD...

IF you are considereing reloading... I have to agree with the conventional wisdom and tell you to look for a SDB new or used...

The people at dillon are great to deal with and you will find most of the shooters you shoot around will be glad to help you out with information and load data......I loaded on a rockchucker JR when I started shooting IPSC and I spent more time in the garage to produce 50 rds. of ammo then I now spend to produce 400-500 rounds on my 550 ...less time loading means more time practicing or shooting ;)

Hell even my wife thougth the 550 was a good idea compared to the old RC jr.

  9. FWIW,

I beleive you can send your shell plate to dillon and the will machine a few thou off as well as trimming your sizing die to go a few thou deeper....I know of several guys around here who have had that done. Keep in mind if you buy a fancy undersize sizing die ...it will only size as deep as the shell plate will allow...something else you can do is to use a Lee Factory Crimp die...does a very nice job.......it's all about how deep you can size your brass...

    Good Luck

    Joe

  10. Very Styling move there Phil......it's one of the reasons I enjoy IPSC so much around here....most of the Big Guys I know are very happy & willing to help out someone who is just starting out....best thing this guy can do is get out shooting and stay shooting.......

    Take Care....see you around...

  11. If you like shooting 200's in lead.... A very nice load is 5.5-6.0 gr of Solo 1250 loaded to 1.250..on top of a federal 150's it in very soft shooting and a nice clean powder....if you shoot a lot of bullseye or unique you will really appreciate the Solo Powders...and the Clays Also.....

My favorite load for the 45 is a 255 LRNFP over Solo 1000 with federal 150's similar loads with Clays also

    Like 3.6 - 4.0 GR....another soft clean shooter....

  12. I have been shooting P-14's for a while now... done a lot of experimenting.with springs followers....base pads....the best combinnations I have come up with are properly sized ISMI springs with either Gramms or Dawson Base PAds...you have to be careful using the Gramms with pin on magwells ...fit will be very tight....you can make out better using an S&A that requires the frame to be trimmed .020 or an older guncraft weld on ....both well opened up....if you try to trim your gramms pads to get clearence you will wind up having them crack.....are far as followers use either Gramms or Dawsons....

    Good Luck... ;)

  13. 50,000 to 60,000 federal 150 thru my 550B not one unwanted bang in the bunch....wear safety glasses..keep the pickup tubes and the primer mag tube clean....

.follow the directions .....questions call dillon....I tried using Win LP's but my stuff chronoed all over the place.... I seem to get very consistant results with the 150's....all in all I would say worth the extra buck or so per 1000

  14. I have been shooting PARA's for the last 6 years and haven't had the problem you described...except maybe when I didn't get the grip safety all the way depressed. I also second  the motion for you to get the 80 series safety either checked or removed and get yourself a proper trigger job. My older gun has over 200,00 rds thru it and runs like a champ. My new PARA went back to the factory right after I got it because a local gunsmith didn't like the fit of the barrel.... They turned it around in like 2 weeks...all in all I have been very happy with my PARA's.

Good Luck and remember the Golden Rule.....IPSC and Home defense guns have to RUN.

  15. FWIW Last spring I put up with a number of feed problems with my p-14's after installing new springs . I finally threw a fit....reworked my mags....old springs...new followers....cool.....I then started working on the new hi-tech springs....I worked out a correct length , I replaced my followers with either Dawson modified or Gramms..am using a combination of dawson & gramms pads... guess what....100 % reliable 18 in the mag and 1 in the tube reloads go in fine....life is good....

my biggest problem was too much spring pressure...

  16. I know this is not what you are wanting to hear but I took a class with Todd J. and he demonstrated without any doubt that a few hundreths on your splits in not as important as being smooth and consistant. We had a guy who was very into steel shooting with us who was getting .14 & .15 splits Todd asked him to shoot a stage we had setup(I think it was like 4 paper targets a 3 steel ) as fast as he could....Todd then told us he would shoot the same stage shooting .18-.20 splits. Todd after running thru it 2-3 times beat him by like .5 to .7 secs. For what it is worth there are a lot of young guys out there who can shoot real real fast....but the smoother older guys....Todd...Jerry....Robby...seem to be able to hold it together at the big matches...and that is what really matters....

    Right Brian....;)

  17. Hey Chris,

At Area 8 this year I believe we had 2 gents in Kilts...well at least in Saturday. I know the guy who was running maybe stage 6 was wearing one (Tony I think), he seemed to take his ball busting like a man....and appeared quite comfortable...I did notice he was very careful when he sat down ;)

  18. I Have 2 P-14's 1 is very used I pruchased 2nd hand 125,000 + rounds thru it and no problems...

My other P-14, the one Para Originally replaced the barrel on for me has probably close to 55-60,000 rounds thru it....

PF running from 180 to about 169...aside from the occasional worn shock buff it looks & runs great...in fact most of the original finish is still on the rail.....

Maybe I just got a good one
