Comp Port Deformation

Recommended Posts

I made this comp out of stainless steel and it has only seen maybe 500 rounds. In order to reduce the length a little I decided to reduce the distance between the ports to 50 thou instead of the usual 100 thou. I was cleaning my gun this morning and noticed that the metal in the first port was bent (pushed forward).

Although it's irritating that I'll now have to make another comp (this comp worked real well), it's pretty neat seeing that the gases can deform stainless steel like that. It's also pretty neat seeing proof that the gases are pushing against the vertical surfaces. Anyway, I thought you guys would find this interesting.

If you're using something like 303, 304, 316...like that....yield strength is pretty low. Like 20-30k psi. Try 17-4. Now you're up around 120k psi or so.

Yep, 17-4 has a much higher yeild then the more common SS as mentioned above. Find some double aged and it's even higher. Use it reguraly at work for custom load cells.
