pmd
I am sure this has been covered before - but here we go. I have a newly aquired Remington 11-87 that I bought used - The gun is very clean and looks like it was only shot a few times. Today I went to the range to function test. Federal 00 buck worked great. I then tried a couple other loads that would not cycle the gun: Remington 2 3/4dram, 1 1/8oz, 7 1/2 shot Federal Multi Purpose Shotshell 3 dram eq, 1 1/8oz, 7 1/2 shot Winchester AA (3dram?,9shot I believe left box at range?) The barrel I used was a 26" "Target" barrel. I checked the gas system and it was clean and dry, both holes in the barrel were clean and open. Anyways what works in your 11-87? Anything I should be checking for in/on my 11-87. Thanks in advance for your help and experiences... Paul
ErikW
I am sure this has been covered before Then it's a prime candidate for the Search function. Here's a search on "Activator" for the special widget that's supposed to help 1187s function... http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?...hlite=activator
George
3 1/4 Dram, 1 1/8 Oz of most any size shot should function a clean, properly working stock 11-87 reliably. The gas system doesn't mind a little lube of the right type (Remoil or hi-temp capable). Try WW or Fiocchi Sporting Clays or Trap loads that are rated for at least 1300 fps or better. Some 3 Dram loads of 1 to 1 1/8 Oz shot will work 100%, some won't. Below that all bets are off. If you don't want to drill out the gas ports, or play around with gas ring setups, or both, just shoot 3 3/4 Dram loads of #4 or #6 shot. It will run 100% on that fodder, guaranteed! pmd
Well I spent a bit of time reading thru some of the previous posts pertaining to this problem. Here's what I've done so far: First I ordered an ACTIVATOR free from Remington see Shred's post at http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?...d,ring,and,1187 Second I sprayed TSI301 on the bolt and associated areas. Third I opend the gas ports to about 0.140 Yesterday I went to the range and did a function test. I tried both: Remington 2 3/4dram, 1 1/8oz, 7 1/2 shot and Federal Multi Purpose Shotshell 3 dram eq, 1 1/8oz, 7 1/2 shot Both ammo functioned the gun flawlessly in a rapid fire. I'll be going back to test fire again to be sure it was not just a fluke. I have two 26" barrels so I will try the Remington ACTIVATOR using the barrel that hos no modifications to the gas ports and will report my findings later. George
Hi PMD, Welcome to the gas mod club. Glad to hear that function has returned. I have the activator, and an extra gas ring in my 26" bbl 11-87. The ports are also drilled out to .160" It took all of this to get function back to 100% with 3 Dram loads after installing a JP Recoil Eliminator and porting the bbl. You should not not need to do anything other than adding the activator, or drilling out the ports. Both should not be necessary for a non-ported/comped shotgun.
