disfigured necks

I picked up after the police this week and found several cases with this rounded neck.

It appears that the brass is onced fired (still crimped), all are 05 or 06 stamp, and the primer hit is cratered.

I am just curious what would cause this brass to be deformed like this. Thanks.

First thought is that the chamber is not quite "right" - but it could relate to headspace (also a chamber problem, or it may be that the gas port pressure (assuming a gas operated rifle) is high and opening the bolt earlier than it should - while the chamber pressure is still fairly high. Is the neck length as it should be? If so, then it would suggest the chamber itself. If the neck length is short, it suggests the opening is early.

The cratered primer suggests either high pressure or headspace. The damaged rim and extractor mark suggest high pressure.

Maybe it was 5.56 ammunition fired in a 223 chamber, resulting in high pressure.
