August IDPA at BGSL heads up

Recommended Posts

Plan now to participate in 2 exciting events at our IDPA match on August 15!

1. IDPA HQ has just announced the 2009 Postal Match. The first day it can be shot just happens to be on August 15, the date of our match. So we will be using the 4 stages of the Postal Match as a portion of our August match. If you would like to preview those stages in advance, they are at: http://www.idpa.com/PostalMatchInfo.asp

2. Following the IDPA match (around 1 p.m.) there will be a Shotgun Side Match. All proceeds from this side match will go directly to the Wounded Warrior Project -- a project that is devoted to helping our military men and women who are wounded fighting our wars. I think you'll agree that we need to do more to help these warriors who are the true heroes among us. Here's your chance to do that while having lots of fun. Let's find out who is the best defensive shotgunner in Kentucky. Invite all your friends! If you can't make the IDPA match, just show up by 1:00 p.m. to shoot the side match. <>If you want to participate but don't have a suitable shotgun, just bring some factory-loaded shells and I am sure someone will lend you a shotgun to use.

Side match details:

Entry fee = $5 per entry; enter as many times as desired.

Seven shots required. Shot size must be no larger than #6. Bird shot will be fine.

Targets will be the Texas Star and 2 Pepper Poppers. They may be engaged in any order.

Shotguns may have only iron or bead sights, no electronic or scope sights. No compensators allowed. No speed loaders. Competitor may start with a maximum of 5 shells loaded. Reloads may be stowed anywhere desired, but may not be in either hand while firing.

Start position will be: muzzle pointed downrange, safety on, finger out of the trigger-guard, butt of the shotgun touching the shooter's belt or holster.

Prizes will be bragging rights and the knowledge that you are helping some of our nation's HEROES.

There will be 6 categories recognized in the results posting:

Heavy Autoloader = 12 gauge

Heavy Pump = 12 gauge

Medium Autoloader = 20 gauge

Medium Pump = 20 gauge

Light Autoloader = Anything lighter than 20 gauge (.410, 28, 32 etc.)

Light Pump = Anything lighter than 20 gauge (.410, 28, 32 etc.)

Also Saturday 8th, we are having our "Steel Showdown".

Here is some information on our Steel Showdown.

What: Steel Showdown is an action pistol match that requires the competitor to hit 5 or less Static steel targets. Most stages specify a specific steel target to be shot last (Stop Plate) This format is friendly to all skill levels and is a great event to introduce new shooters to action pistol event. Each competitor will shoot each stage 5 times, commonly referred to as a string. The highest string time per stage is thrown out. The 4 lowest string times are totaled to give a total stage time. All stage times are then combined for a total match time. Lowest time gets bragging rights

When: 2nd Saturday of each month, Set up 8:30 , Registration Starts 9:00, New Shooter Check out 9:30, Match starts 10:00.

**** New Shooters - (i.e. Any Shooter who has not had a new shooter check out at a BGSL Pistol Event) must attend a new shooters check out – or they will not be able to shoot.

Cost: BGSL member $10, Non- Members $15 – Second Gun $5 (Juniors - $5 with paying parent) **Junior 16 or younger

Equipment: Any safe centerfire pistol / revolver .355 (9mm) or above or Rim-Fire (.22 ) We recommend a minimum of 3 magazines – 5 being better for magazine holding 10 rds. or less. Holsters must be a strong side and cover the trigger when the pistol is holstered **Rim-Fire pistols may start at a low ready but must be bagged at the completion of each stage. Eye and hearing protection is required for shooters and spectators. Ammo – a typical match would require 100 – this is with no misses – BRING EXTRA. We will offer a second relay for shooters who which to shoot the match a second time. (Same pistol or different)

Pistol categories

Revolver – Iron Sights or Optics

The results of the August 15, 2009, IDPA match at BGSL are now posted on the www.bgslinc.com web site. Click on the IDPA link under Sports in the upper right, then on Results. They are also posted on the www.IDPAKY.com web site.

Thanks to the SOs who worked this match: Jennifer Anderson, Don Applegarth, Frank Cook, Brad Davidson, Robert Keller, and Joe Mireles. Thanks also to: Frank Cook and Tom Tryon who ran the 8 new shooters thru the new shooter check, Rosalee Edwards, match registration and Larry Cox, assistant match director.

Our next match will be on Saturday, September 19, 2009. Weather permitting, we will be offering the classifier after the September match.

Despite the heat and the length of the regular match (due partially to the large turnout of 63 shooters) we still had 21 shooters stay for the Shotgun Side Match to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. Including the many generous donations, we raised $750 which has been sent to WWP. A big THANK YOU to everyone who participated or donated to this worthy cause. If you wanted to help with this but didn't get to, you can donate online at the website linked above.

The Postal Match scores will be submitted to HQ early next week. In accordance with the published rules for the Postal Match, if a shooter is not classified in the division they shot for the match, but is classified in another division, then their scores are to be submitted with the highest classification they hold. This it the way we already do it for our local matches, as per IDPA rules. If a shooter is not classified in any division, then their scores will not be accepted by HQ.

A vest was found at the range after the match. If it belongs to you, I will have it at the next match, or you can contact me to arrange a time to pick it up if you will need it before then.

Corey Estill will be teaching an Intermediate Competition Shooting class at BGSL. If you are interested you can visit the www.bgslinc.com web pages and learn more about this class.
