Indijan Posted May 11, 2009 Share Posted May 11, 2009 Hi. Im from Norway and im going to minnesota from the 8th of august untill the 26th. Need tips on shops and things to see for a shooting fan. I know i can find adresses to different shops on the net, but which is the best? Im going to start shooting IPSC Production class later this year, so where can i find the best shop to buy differen equipment? (Ghost rig, range bag and so on.) As far as Gun stuff, we have Cabellas , in Owatonna, Ahlmans a big shop a few hrs north, and alot of mom and pop shops, but nothing too exciting. DPMS is located here, as well as Federal ammo company. JP is also here. I shoot USPSA in Pine Island, which is about 15 miles from Rochester, we shoot every Wed night at 6. There is also 3 gun USPSA, and idpa at Holmen Wi, which is only about 60 miles from here. When you get here, feel free to contact me on here, and I can give you more pointers. Knutson is a very common name here in Norway. Minnesota was a major destination for many Norwegians that left Norway during the depression. Ill find the adresses to Cabellas and Ahlmans and check them out. Equipment cost about twice as much here in Norway and the selection is much larger in the states, so ill be doing some heavy shopping If im welcome to drop by Pine Island, ill be happy to come by and watch you guys shoot a few stages. Dave Gundry Posted May 12, 2009 Share Posted May 12, 2009 (edited) Yes, you are more than welcome to come watch us shoot - introduce yourself to Harmon, the match director (dark curly hair, wears glasses). We're all fairly nice people and can keep you entertained for a while Unfortunately the selection of competition gear in gun shops here is pretty limited (or nonexistent). But you'll find a decent amount of hunting/reloading/general shooting gear at the shops waxman mentioned. Probably won't find a Ghost rig anywhere. If you can spend some time closer to Minneapolis, two of my favorite shops are GunStop in Minnetonka (just west of Minneapolis, about 20 minutes from the airport), and J&S Guns & Ammo in Lakeville (about 25 minutes south of the airport). One of my favorite things to do in that area is kayaking on the Root River - it's a small river with lots of fun little rapids. There are a few places to rent kayaks and inner tubes in Lanesboro. Might be a fun day trip for you and a few others. The only major match going on in MN while you're here is the DPMS Tri-Gun - it's a 3 gun (pistol, rilfe, & shotgun) match in St Cloud (about 2-2.5 hours north of Rochester). But there are plenty of weekly pistol matches going on then too. Also by august the mosquito's are the size of small birds, and have been known to drain a man of his blood if he is foolish enough to enter the woods. Dont know about the kayaking tho, Iv been wet and cold too much in the past to enjoy it Ed K: Are you serius about me shooting? Im a complete noob, and ill give you guys a laugh for sure. Iv been a long range rifle specialist for 15 years, but has just started my pistol addiction. Im not even qualified for practical shooting here in Norway!! The rules for pistol shooting here in Norway are extremely strict. To own a pistol here in Norway you have to go to a 8-hour safety class at a gun club, then you have to shoot at least once a week for 6 months at the gun club (With the gun clubs 22's). Then you can apply for a firearms licence where you state pistol make, modell, caliber, and intended use. The police then do a screening (Criminal record and info registered at your gun club) And THEN you can buy a pistol. If you dont remain a member at a pistol/gun club the police will take that pistol away from you. And they dont care about military background or anything ;( BTW: I have now been a member at a pistol range for 3 months, so i have a long way to go Still "puffing" away with the 22's. Keith: A competiton of that sice should have some big name vendors, so thats a trip im deff going to take. And thanks to all of you guys for helping me out. *and Montana must be something special, i meen snow and mosquito's at the same time? Lots of friendly guys and a lot of tips on practical pistol shooting. A special thanks to Jay who let me try out his CZ at stage 3. Steel is fun! Going up to the DPMS tri-gun on Saturday to watch, so if someone wants to tag along im leaving Rochester 8 in the morning. Give me a PM if you want a ride. Its more fun with company when you drive. The best stage to watch i think was the stage where you used all 3 guns in the same stage. The shooter started with shotgun on table in front of him, rifle on a table next to it, and pistol ended it all about 50 yards up the field. (I hope you know what stage i meen). BUT if i was shooting, i bet i would like the shotgun stage where you ended up inside that abandoned house. Congrats to your son.
