Ozzy Luke
Hello everyone and merry belated Christmas to you all. I am a newby so thanks in advance for your patience and help. I have a newly acquired STI Range Master and need to purchase a competition holster for it. Being a little limited in the budget department,(buying the STI saw to that), I have come accross a used old-style Ghost holster with the trigger guard pin. I do not want to drill my gun for a pin however, as it is nickel plated and I don't want to make a starting point for delaminating or bubbling of the nickel (plus I'm just not keen on drilling the trigger guard). I have been told by the seller that the pin is removeable and the holster will work fine without it. I do not have access to this type of holster to see how they work and whether the gun will be secure enough for my needs/liking without the pin. Although the price for this used holster is within my budget, I would hate to dish out cash for something that won't cut the mustard and that I'll have to replace. I live in Australia so second hand competition holsters don't come up very often. Can you guys and gals help me out with knowledge about these older-style Ghost holsters, how they secure the gun and your thoughts on whether it's a viable piece of gear when used without the pin. Also, your opinions on good competition holsters other than the top-of-the-line CR-Speed, Ghost etc as I just can't affort the $ at this time Thanks again. bgary
My personal opinion is that the old-style Ghost should *not* be used without the pin. It is an integral piece of the retention. I base this on a relatively small (but personal) set of data. I have had a gun come out of my holster three times. All three times it was with an old-style Ghost, on which the pin "backed out". Once I loc-tited the pin in place, it never happened again. I now use one of the current-model Ghosts, which is *designed* to retain the gun without a pin. Big difference. $.02 B
Rolex
Welcome- walk away slow from the old Ghost- and buy a new style-keep it locked and learn how to use it in the locked position- you will learn to love it! I have two for open and limited!
Lead slinger
I myself have purchased the old style holster for my sti and before I drilled the trigger guard I tried it without the pin. It will not, I repeat it will not work without the pin. Drilling the trigger guard was a piece of cake and for a price of $65 that I paid for the holster it was worth every penny. No need to spend $150 for the new one. Hope this helps.
