G-ManBart
"This soldier, I realized, must have had friends at home and in his regiment; yet he lay there deserted by all except his dog. I looked on, unmoved, at battles which decided the future of nations. Tearless, I had given orders which brought death to thousands. Yet here I was stirred, profoundly stirred, stirred to tears. And by what? By the grief of one dog." ~Napoleon Bonaparte, on finding a dog beside the body of his dead master, licking his face and howling, on a moonlit field after a battle. Napoleon was haunted by this scene until his own death.
CSEMARTIN
When I was in school a number of years ago, I remember hearing a story about a guy that had a head injury with subsequent amnesia. He couldn't remember the names of his wife or kids. But he was able to remember the name of his dog.

G-ManBart
Pets seem to be timeless. Nothing changes the love of a family pet, except senseless cruelty. Quite true....they seem to be able to give love well beyond the point at which a person would walk away in disgust.
bierman
I don't know who said this or where I first saw it, but this is my favorite quote about dogs: "I aspire to be the man my dog thinks I am". That may not be the exact quote, but it's as close as I can get.
JimmyZip
I really like that, and the father my young children think I am. I strive to be good to them, my dog, and oh yeah, my wife too
