George D
Hi Gary, Your best bet would be to write to Roy Jinks at Smith and Wesson. He is their historical expert and has published books on the subject. For a one-up enquiry such as this I would say he would be happy to help you. Patrick Sweeney
.38 S&W or .38 special? The V sounds like it might be a WWII production gun. Photos, drawings, scans of markings, all would help. The second number is probably the assemblers numbers. In the old days the major parts were marked with assembly numbers so they could get the correct parts back together after fishing them out of the blueing or parkerizing tanks. Barrel length, sight style, number of screws seen on the frame, give us more detail.
