Cutting A Sti Slide Shorter To Accomidate A Commander Length Threaded

What is the best way to cut back a slide. I have a milling machine and some end mills. Not sure if this is best method though. Want to make a open shorty gun.

Last one I cut from 6" to 5" I used a hacksaw and a water cooled bench grinder to even it up. But I'm definitely not a gunsmith.

With a coldsaw, you could cut the length within 1/8" of the final length and then make your final cut with the mill and a solid carbide endmill. With a bandsaw or hacksaw, I would give myself more room and only cut within 1/4" starting out and then clean up with the mill.

Remember, you're cutting the recoil system too, no surprises.

Wire EDM would be the ticket if you have access. Otherwise you could mill it easily.

Remember to cut it at a 1* angle to match the comp angle, then you will need to trim at least once to time the comp with an acceptable gap. If you use feeler gauges to measure how much needs to come off you can probably just trim once on a good tight mill with DRO.

I used a Bridgeport type mill a 1/2 end mill long enough to cut in one pass. I took about 30 - 40 thou a pass and didn't get in a hurry, but I'm not a machinist. I just fix machines.
