jester
Modifying parts is a new venture for me, so forgive the newbie questions I have been told that changing out the hammer spring and recoil spring on my USP 9 will improve performance. I plan to use the gun for IDPA match primarily & for range use. I kinda understand the hammer spring, lighter spring resulting in lighter pull yadda yadda, I'm good there. The recoil spring tho has be spinning. If I go to a reduced wt recoil spring, am I not then causing more wear & tear on my pistol's frame & slide? cypher
Jester, I know at first glance it doesn't seem to make sense, but I gave it a shot anyway and now I am believer. I went to a 17 lb. mainspring and that did lighten my trigger pull somewhat. I also installed a 15 lb. recoil spring and sure enough the recoil seems to have lessened. That never would have occurred to me on my own. Here are links that speak to some of your concerns: http://www.brianenos.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard...28&topic=40 Tells about some experience with reduced power springs. http://www.brianenos.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard...=28&topic=6 This thread talks about clipping coils on the recoil spring to actually "fit" them to the gun. http://www.brianenos.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard...28&topic=21 Talks in depth about lighter recoil springs in guns and what effect they have... What is evident throughout all of these threads is that there is no "one" answer, each gun will require its own solution that you must arrive at by trial and error. To answer your question though, the short answer is no, reducing the spring weight on your recoil spring (within reason) will not adversely affect your gun. Just make sure you change your spring every 2000 rounds or so, and also make sure you use a shok-buff and change that out every 2000 rounds or so as well. Hope this helps... Duane Thomas
Man, after such a complete, in-depth answer as that - with links, no less - I don't know what else there is to add. It's worth noting that the lighter hammer spring is not there primarily for a lightened trigger pull, but for its effect on perceived recoil. cypher
Doh!!! I meant to mention that. That is why I did it. However, right before I installed the lighter mainspring I was concerned with how it would affect my trigger, so I guess I focused on that. Thanks Duane... I consider that high praise indeed. jester
Cypher - thanks! I guess it's one of those questions you ask & the best answer you get is "because it does!"
