Clay1
I'm sure that you will get various responses. If the weapon was a benchrest rifle there are standardized barrel break in routines that many feel are important. On a handgun. First clean the packing grease and relube, check the barrel for obstructions, load ammo and pull the trigger. Like I said others might very well feel differently. Interceptor
I got a new Springfield .40, put 2000 rounds through it in 7 days and then shot the 2005 Nationals with it the following week. I think "break-in" is a term that shouldn't apply to a well built IPSC handgun. Edited October 10, 2005 by Interceptor
SRT Driver
Clean it each range session for a couple hundred rounds. If it's a 1911, don't use grease. Oil the frame rails, the bbl hood and bushing. And lube the crap out of it for the first 100 or so.
George
Lube it, shoot it, clean it. Repeat for a few hundred rounds. If it has any malfs after that breakin period, then it needs some tweaking. I would say 400+ with clean, lube and inspect at say 250 and 500 and it's pretty much worn in. By 400+ rounds you should be able to see signs of self lapping where the actual contact surfaces are between the moving parts. This is where the lube goes from then on. Light oil for breakin, whatever suits you afterwards.
Larry White
Clean it, lube with mobil 1 10w30, about 200rds function check and practice. Clean it and lube it with mobil 1 10w30 and treat it like you will the rest of its life.------Larry
