extractor roll pin tension

Recommended Posts

while showing clear today, discovered that the extractor was missing... AR15 style claw extractor on a NFA bolt, but the pivot roll pin was visible... luckily found the extractor in the sand, expecting the extractor to be broken, but discovered it was not...upon removing the bolt, observed that the roll pin would move freely in the hole without any tension....

sorted through an assortment of 3/32" roll pins and found the largest diameter pin, trimmed it to length, and used a sharp chisel to expand and swage one end... re inserted... something you might check for when you clean your bolts....you learn something every day... regards

the original pin extended the full length of the hole in the bolt, just no tension to hold it in place...I think the pin moved upward to release the extractor.. hole is drilled diagonally, and terminates in the ejector cut on the bottom of the bolt... the pin has space to move upward in front of the key... other than the charging handle, nothing to retain it... don't know if this is a "one off" occurrence or indicator that there is enough pressure exerted upon the blow back extractors, to re shape the roll pin... can always stake it in place like a link pin in a 1911... :)
