Petrov
Hey guys I am getting some shaved lead from my bullets when seating. #2 station bells the case and drops the powder. Does the OAL of the cartridge affects how much it gets belled? (38 special) Is the SDB 38 special die a roll crimp or taper?
jmorris
Yes, length of the case has a direct effect on how much bell a case will have. The longer it is, the more "bell" it will have. The "bell" has no effect on the OAL, however.
Petrov
I guess I will have to sort my 38 spcl brass. Some flares just fine other shaves the bullets. Thank you. Edited November 25, 2014 by Petrov
DougCarden
Adjust your bell down some more so you can bell all the cases....no need to sort.... DougC
Petrov
I am worried that if I bell some of my shorter cases my longer cases can be over belled. I have some short winchester brass and long PMC brass.
dillon
Adjust the expander die using the shorter cases. 38/357 uses a roll crimp die
Petrov
I am loading 160 grain round nose bullets with no crimp groove, should I avoid roll crimping then? Just adjust enough the die to get rid of the flare?
Oldgoat03
There shouldn't be enough difference in case length to be an issue. Just adjust the flare to the shortest case and you should be good to go. I do not use a roll crimp on plated bullets without a crimp groove. I just remove the flare and press against the bench to test / esnure proper neck tension to avoid setback.
