Agney5
Ok I know this is going to sound sacrilegious but is it possible to Gunkote, Durakote, Cerakote whatever your spray on of choice hard chrome? I'm working on 1911 build and I want to have it hard chromed then add some color. While I'm at it who has suggestions for hard chrome shop here in the mid west?

Thanks for the help guys and gals.

Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk

yoshidaex
Nothing wrong with applying cerakote/durakote/etc, etc over hard chrome. It's a bit expensive considering there are two finishes being applied one after the other.
openmike
Are you planning to coat all of the chrome? Or have the chrome show thru certain areas? Im asking because any finish being coated has to be blasted with AO down to about 120grit before coating. Cerakote has a masking tape product that could get you thru this process. There is also a tape that protects finishes from the blasting process. (like if you only wanted to do certain areas.) APW is really great for chrome. I think they do Cerakote also. Show us your idea! Agney5
My plan is to send it off to have it hard chromed. I will be doing the spray on, my plan is to take a standard Caspian slide and frame hard chrome them. I'm going to leave the natural contours of the slide and actually cote them so the top radius and the countered part on the front of the slide as well as some accent pieces are all maroon color. The gun will match a bolt action and AR build that I'm working on for class. Thanks for the help! I'll check APW out.
JWeber
The company I work for use to paint over chromed surfaces. The issue is that the chromed surface is so smooth that the subsequent finishes won't stick to it easily. The prep after it is chromed is the critical step. A blasting or etching process needs to be done to roughen up the chromed surface to get anything that is put on top of it to stick.
