I can't tell you how many times I've heard the dreaded expressions "benefit of doubt" and "assist the competitor" used in respect of scoring, by a well-meaning person, who forgets that this often ends up meaning "everyone else gets screwed". You give each competitor exactly what they actually earned, according to the rules. Any more or less might help one, but it's is invariably a disservice to many others.
