JoseyWalesX
I have around 6k rounds through my Pro and was wondering should I go ahead and change out the recoil spring or wait until I start having FTE's. Also, are you guys replacing them with the factory setup or using a different spring and guide rod?
mcracco
As your recoil spring weakens you would tend to have problems with the gun feeding/returning fully to battery. I have yet to see an 'official' word on recoil spring maintenance but generally replace after 5,000-10,000 cycles is what I hear. I would tend to lean towards 10,000+. The weight spring needed depends on your load and, to an extent, how accomplished of a shooter you are. I needed a 13# spring when I was using a 147gn RN but had to switch back to the factory 16# for 124gn FP loads. The guide rods and springs from SSS are great. Actually their button head screw (S&W uses hex) make reassembly a microsecond faster.
saab
I asked this question of S&W about the same # of rounds. Well, they sent me a new recoil spring AND a new striker assembly for free! Great service!!! As far as other types of springs, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
