ParaGunner
We know cold weather affects ammunition, but does it affect the chrono itself? What if I left my gun and loaded ammo in a warm running car while I set up the chrono, then quickly fire off 5-10 rounds while the ammo and gun are warm. Will that give me a accurate warm weather chrono as long as the gun and ammo are warm/hot? Or is the chrono itself affected by cold weather? Pat Miles
Taking warm chrono out into the cold may cause some condensation on the IR lens covers which may screw the pooch. I wouldn't worry about using the chrono in the cold. Electrons like cold temps more than hot temps. Pat
Chris Keen
Unless you're shooting the FLA OPEN here in a week or two, I wouldn't worry about it until like March or April. Or use the indoor IR skyscreens on the CED chrono we have at the range in Miamisburg next Monday night.
ParaGunner
I wasn't to worried about the chrono. I was wondering if I could shoot a warm/ hot gun and ammo in cold weather and get a accurate result for warmer weather?
Chris Keen
Hypothetically I would have to say yes. Temperature is temperature. Shouldn't matter whether it's January or July, would it? Anyone else know fer sure? Edited February 5, 2011 by Chris Keen

Pat I'm thinking this is not true, I bring warm optics into the cold all the time, and they do not condensate..... but when I come back in AFTER they are cold into the warm... yes, fog. I bring my chrono out from the warm, and it works fine.
ParaGunner
So will this method provide accurate results for Warner weather?
Kyle O
So will this method provide accurate results for Warner weather? Differences in atmospheric humidity/temperature should be no "large" factor when measuring pistol bullet velocity at 10 feet. But, I've never tested this. If the powder/barrel temp is the same (no other varibles besides air temp), bullets should leave the muzzle at the same velocity (theoretically).
