550b Link arm wear

Recommended Posts

Hi, all.

I just wanted to post the question before I actually call Dillon about a problem I noticed yesterday with loading 9mm on a 550b. I noticed that the link arms (part numbers 13747 (right) and 13583 (left)) appear to wobble a bit on their shafts, which causes the primer punch hole in shell plate platform to move when returning the operating handle to the top of the stroke to seat a primer. The primer seating cup then binds up, as it's not properly aligned with the hole in the shell plate platform due to the twisting of the link arms (mostly noticeable on the right side, but a little on the left one as well).

I don't recall seeing this sort of play before. When I first got the press (used), it was very tough to cycle, so I took it all apart and noticed that the link arms were galled, so I cleaned them up and polished them, after which it ran like a top for approximately 4,300 rounds.... until yesterday.

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this sort of thing happening to them. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

They are attached to the crank via C-clips. However, I see that most of the wobble appears at the top, where the link arms are connected to the frame via the link arm pins 13834 (left) and 13881 (right). I am guessing, as I haven't taken the machine completely apart yet, but because I can see the wobble at the top of the link arms, that the holes at the top of the link arms have become slotted, allowing for extra play in the fit.

Hope that helps!

Cheers!

Nylcok nuts can be tightened to take up for play. With the older versions with C-clips, there are bowed washers between the inside of the link arm and the crank. You probably need to add an additional one to each side. Phone or e-mail us and we'll mail them to you. If you e-mail us, please be sure to include your address.
